  • Sargsyan is a complete lunatic, in spite of the americans having just lowered their percentage of military assistance to armenia, and rose their assistance to the azeris, why would Armenia take part in the NATO exercises. this is absolute lunacy. armenia is in a worse off condition then georgia, armenian cannot just maneuver its allies when ever the hell it pleases because it will get fucked in the end

  • this is partnership for peace, this isn't an offensive. anyway, last i heard, armenia opted out of the programme because the states lowered their assistance, and renewed their commitment to "the territorial integrity of azerbaijan"

  • The official reason was instability in Georgia, but I would say it was more in solidarity with Russia.

  • armenia had been planning to participate in the war games regardless of russia (which is good)- and infact, while the war was going on in georgia, last year's nato war games were held in armenia herself...

  • Yes, however Armenia (rightfully) obstained. Georgia is playing with fire, mark these words, they will lose even more land with their utterly chauvinistic approach instead of realizing that Georgia is home to various peoples that need to be respected in their own right and not pursue 'Georgia for Georgians' policy. This is not an "anti-Georgian" call, I simply hope they will reverse their discrmination throughout Georgia, including towards Armenians.

  • Armenia did not, as I said in solidarity with Russia, Armenia backed out, although the official reason was instability in Georgia.

Afterall of this, NATO says that Georgia will be a prospective member in not so distant future. I guess Georgian government has really decided to fight these endless wars on behalf of NATO (on the very doorsteps of Russia), including in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It will only at the end simply fragment (further) Georgia as it already has been.

  • The Turks were agitating not only in Chechnya (search "Plan Kavkaz") for their jihad, but also as far at Tatarstan in trying to foment separatist feelings in that Turkic republic of Russia. There Turkic republics and regions throughout Russia have vast lands which is the last thing that Russia would give up (given the fact that some of the most vital resources are here). The line of defense against Turkish encroachment is on the Armenian border, where Armenian and Russian soldiers stand.

  • Now, what do you think Azerbaijan would place as a precondition to Russia before it decides to make the sale final considering it's conflict with Armenia over Karabakh. I'll tell you what. Russia owns a large part of Armenias vital infastructure as well as billions in investments, Russia can pretty much cripple the Armenian economy at will. Azerbaijan will ask Russia to put pressure on Armenia to give up karabakh, Armenia will refuse and Russia will put pressure via other much more severe ways.

  • This is a likely scenario and could play out word for word within the not so distant future. If Russia feels the benefit of monopolizing gas to Europe is worth more than keeping it's small ally in the Caucasus,it will drop Armenia instantly. One of the main reasons Russia supports Armenia so much is because it wants to keep Azerbaijan in check, if Azerbaijan gives Russia what it needs, Armenia loses it's value and becomes a financial burden. This is a chess game and Armenia must know it's role.

  • Theoretically this is possible, but Russian leadership knows Turkish (and Azeri) ambitions of uniting and even going beyond into Central Asia in some kind of Turkic confederation. Hence the Armenian Genocide and the attempt to annhilate Armenia as a bastion that separates the Turkic world. WE ARE the only viable wedge from Thrace to Siberia that divides them. I DO NOT believe in near future the Central Asian republics will join, but Turks and Azeri Turks are a different matter.

  • I disagree with this scenario and I will tell you why. Armenia is not a "short term" strategic ally of Russia. Russian leadership KNOWS that the overwhelming majority of Armenian population in Armenia and beyond is AGAINST giving up of Artsakh. It would be political suicide for Armenian leadership to make such a move, and Russia knows this. Azerbaijani resources are NO MATCH (maybe 1 percent of that of Russian reserves) of Russia. The energy card is in Russian hands and not that of Azerbaijan.

  • not exactly, during soviet times, azerbaijan supplied more than half of petrol reserves for the USSR..we mussn't under-estimate azerbaijan's oil exporting potential, at least in the short term (it will soon run out)...armenia is just an ally to russia right now, because it sees some benefit, border with iran and turkey, sympathetic government, and it gives russia the ability to play armenia against azerbaijan

  • Most of the oil shipped to Europe was Siberian through the "druzhba" at its "peak" oil from Baku and environs reached 17 million tons of annual outtake which was about 7-8% of total Soviet output.

  • Just recently, there was talk between Turkey and Armenia to open their borders, Azerbaijan obviously opposed this and reacted by accepting Russias previous offer for a meeting to arrange the purchase of Azeri gas at market price, thereby increasing Russias monopoly of gas headed to Europe. This move by Azerbaijan was for two reasons, one, to punish Turkey and two, because Russia had shown with the Georgian war that it was still king in its former Soviet territory , so it was a security issue.

  • Resources do play into all of this, but as I said geopolitics are not only about resources. Armenia (and Iran) are a natural counterbalance to Turkic ambitions to unite. As I noted above Turkey and Azerbaijan would unite in a heartbeat, if given the chance. They publish maps without ANY ARMENIA (not even the few percent of historic Armenia that we have today in the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh) that should tell you A LOT...a reminder of WHY the Armenian Genocide was implemented.

  • the 'turkich ambitions to unite', at this point, are far from a realistic political goal , and is supported only by extremists in these countries, or at least it hasn't gained enough real significance for russia to take it into account. but call it what you will, russia is still using armenia for its own goals,.

  • Pan-turkism is coveted by some of the highest echelons of power in the Turkish and Azeri governments.

As I said, the Turkish and Azeri Turk relationship is exactly based on this yearning to unite and this is a reality AND BOTH Armenia and Russia (which has its own Turkic republics like Tatarstan that had very strong separatist and Turkist aspirations) are a wedge and a guard against this ambition.

  • they have had some 18 years to unite, and still they havn't aside from closer cooperation between the two states, it does not seem like any serious steps have been taken by either side to fulfill this idea of a super pan-turkic empire of evil. i don't think any realist politician both in ankara or moscow, actually plans his agenda based on this interpretation. and anyway tatarstans tatar population is less than half the pop. of the entire republic

  • They have not been able to unite but have tried and ARE trying to this very day and will do so in the future. Again, why do you think genocide took place? Why are we fighting in Artsakh? Armenia and the Armenian people ARE that wedge between two Turkic-Altaic nations of Turkey and Azerbaijan want to ERASE the NATIVE ARMENIANS from their own Homeland. As I said this essentially will create a DE FACTO land linkage stretching through Central Asia and even parts of China all the way to Siberia.

  • Armenia rightly canceled its participation in the NATO "war games." For me as to most Armenians Russia is an ALLY and way more than a 'partner.' Same thing for Russian people who are our allies, our friends and I would even say our brothers who have in the toughest times always stood with and by Armenia and Armenian people. That is just in the character of the Russian people.

I am proud to say that throughout history Armenia has done the same and always stood by Russia and Russian people!

  • Though I agree whith your assessment that Russia is more than just partners with Armenia, you can't go as far as to say they are brotherly. For one, many Armenians get killed by Russians in Russia due to hate crimes, secondly, Russias partnership with Armenia is of mutual interest, if Armenia had little to offer, Russia would drop it tomorrow. Armenia doesn't have many choices in reliable allies, due to its current situation, Russia is the best choice, but it comes with a huge price.

  • I never said it is not mutual, if you read it again you will see that it is reciprocal and always has been. As far as the killings, it is sad, not only Armenians, but first of all Russians are killed, large cities in Russia have been turned into killing zones, just look at demographics and the murder rate. Again 'NATO' and the like, who use their divied and conquer policy are gleeming with all of this as they are eyeing the resources of Russia.

We must stand together at all costs!!!

  • You're a fool.

  • ROFL, yeah, this coming from someone who puts a one liner.

  • Well, in my opinion, you're absolutely confused. I do not know what else to tell you, you have to see for yourself. Russia cares only about Russia (in fact, only about a small percentage of its own population). Russia does not give a shit about you.

  • I don't know who you are and how you come to this conclusion the norm of politics begins with particular interests of the given nation - it is also quite normal that certain nations have mutual overlapping interests which they base their alliance(s) upon. Unilateralism within or without the nation never works in long term. I can bring many (working and failed) examples in this regard.

  • Exactly. Being in good terms with Armenia right now is in the interest of the Russian state. And what if that interest changes? I just think you're going well over the border by calling them your 'friends' and 'brothers'.

  • There are a lot of "players" out there that would actually love to see this happen and drive a wedge.

Turkey has been trying to get into the Caucasus ever since they were rebuffed by Russia. Turkey for example, has been one of the key financers of Chechen jihad. Same thing in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Turkey openly has sided with its Azeri Turk kinsmen against Armenia.

Armeno-Russian alliance goes back millennia and historically has withstood the test of time.

  • I think it's just safe to say that currently, Russia and Armenia have common interests, thats the basis of their alliance, nothing more nothing less. Those interests could change and so could the alliance.

  • Common interests and shared history, cultural patterns (based on centuries of shared history etc.). The alliance would not be strong or long lasting if there was no common history (being part of the same country for centuries) that was shared by both nations.

Also, in many respects it is up to all of us in Armenia and Russia to strengthen those ties, we must be pro-active in this regard and not "wait" for "changes" to happen one way or another.

  • Yes there is common history, some good some bad, but that really means nothing when times get tough. Lets use this scenario as an example. A large source of Russias income comes from the sale of oil and natural gas,it uses it's neighbors dependence on Russian resources as a political tool for control and pressure. Because of this, it was against the construction of the BTC pipeline as well as the newly proposed Nabucco pipeline, which will bypass Russia again and compete with Russian pipelines.

  • Armenia-Russia have a 25 year agreement of mutual defense as both nations are part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

As far as the energy resources go, it is quite natural, why not? Russia is a superpower and it SHOULD promote its interests and defend them. You know where Turkey/Azerbaijan interest lie.

Even Turkey today HAS TO come to terms that Russian energy resources still outweigh other options, including Azerbaijan's which is not stable due to transit through Georgia.

  • russia itself does not weald more influence on a global scale than say, turkey. (though they would like to say they do)... the BTC is in fact a threat to russia's attempt at imposing its will on its neighbours (ukraine just recently) this was part of russia's involvement in the artsax war to begin with

  • I completely disagree with this assessment, I mean to imply that Russia and Turkey have equal weight on the world scene is simply completely beyond bounds of reality.

  • no, but russia certainly tries to project a more powerful image than it really has. turkey's influence is inflated by the fact that it sits in one of the most strategically important parts of the world.

  • Russia is the largest nation in terms of land mass, Russia has the richest untapped supplies of natural resources, it has an unmatched cultural heritage, beautiful cities on and on. I do not think all these aspects are to be underestimated and I do not think this is simply a "projection" devoid of reality.

As far as Turkey goes...NO COMMENT.

  • Armenia will never join NATO, it can never be in the same coalition as Turkey. These NATO drills it participates in are for two reason, first it allows it to observe how some of the most militarily advanced countries in the world operate and second, it's a friendly gesture towards the U.S and Europe, since the EU is a significant trading partnet with Armenia and the U.S gives it a lot of aide.

  • You forgot the Azeri question. They participate to better understand Azeri military strategy.

  • not really, military strategy is universal, it's not bound by CIS or NATO. The only other factor I didn't mention was the fact that Armenia would ruin relations with Iran if it were to join NATO, it will never risk that since Iran is the only other big market that Armenia shares a border with.

  • Not all but some are still allies

Those who do not bow to western lies

and refuse to be United Shits of AmUrica puppets

my respect only goes to Armenia, Belarus Kazakhstan Abkhazia and Kyrgyzstan

  • Interesting. This NATO military exercise drills in Armenia and now in Georgia is for US, and Britain to spy on military strategic areas in those countries against Russia. Russia has thought right, and Armenia shouldn't act blindly and has to withdraw its participation coming up in Georgia.

  • Sinaisky is right though - Russia most definitely was a victim of aggression last year. However, the Russian government and the Russian people must understand that it was not the United States proper behind the aggression, but the illegitimate, fascist Bush Crime Syndicate.

Bush is a war criminal and a traitor; now that his reign of terror is over, hopefully we can move forward together. That is, I think, what the vast majority of Russians and Americans want.

  • NATO should be scrapped, and the four great nations of the world - Russia, China, India, and the United States - ought to join forces to smash their collective enemy, which is actually the true enemy of all nations and humanity generally. That enemy is the British Empire.

What, you think it just went away after WWII? Don't be naive. The empire has always been a slime-mold of fascists, financiers, private corporations, and corrupt officials. It must be destroyed if civilization is to survive.
