I don't think Umineko and Higurashi can be compared, because Higurashi is much more horror-oriented whereas Umineko focuses on the elements of mystery fiction and detective stories. The animation in Umineko may be better, but it's harder to take seriously at points, because the witches, stakes of purgatory and siestas are all just way too cute to be threatening.

All in all, both are very good shows. They're just way different.
