'If' rounds up my own feelings in a few words - Thank you Roger, for a near lifetime of enjoyment of every song you ever put your name to. You are Great - my wishes for a Happy retirement - God Bless you.
to robindahouse2k9! nice to Know a teenager with some sence of talent! I had the same fealing when I was 17, thats 23 years past, Good taste is timeless and goes past the convensions of generationes!
The meaning of this song is very clear. My mother told me when I was a child: "if wishes were horses, beggars would ride." When you start a sentence with "if" it's a waste of time. The meaning was clear then just like the meaning of this song. "If" doesn't get you anywhere, duh! Beautiful song sung as only Roger Whittaker can do.
Folks laughed at Whittaker and thought he was an idol for old ladies with purple rinses. But the man has some good songs and he sings them to perfection!
@b0j43 I was 15 when this was a hit and i liked the song very much, but i haven't seen any old ladies with purple rinses of my age yet :-)) Maybe they don't catch my attention since i am still feeling 20 in some way.
I'm 72 and still love this song and I agree with the lyrics, but "Only the dead are free of war!" Plato(Yes, the Greek Philosopher c 500 B.C.). Things have not really changed, have they?
All of my children were introduced to Rogers' music as they grew up and now it is the turn of my 12 grandchildren to enjoy it. What a better place we could have if everyone listened intensley to his words.
@robindahouse2k9 hi mate i'm the same i love Roger i was brought up with roger and others but he is my favourite i love rave and classical so it doesn't mater as long as you like it plus Roger would be proud
@robindahouse2k9 Im 19, I love folk songs. I love easy listning, calms you straight down. Me and dad always go to the local pub and have a nice beer with this song and I look into his eyes and thank him for the times I had as a kid, I thank him for being there for me..
But I believe in "IF. It's what keeps me going. It give me hope. It gives. Make me think .... Just maybe. But I always look for the glass to be half full, not empty. So I believe in "IF".
Love this tune! First heard this on WCCO-AM while traveling with my dad in our Chrysler Newport back in 1966. His voice and music is so unforgettable. Thanks for posting.
I love Roger's music, I find him very inspiring and uplifting, a wonderful voice, and a beautiful mind, he oozes an energy of goodness.
