  • I feel as though I've heard this in a ballet of some sort! It sounds very Tchaikovsky, like Swan Lake!

  • @sodiumwinter1 well, out does mean dance of the dead...

  • holy crap.

I originally just thought this was a marvelous piece but after the above performance,

    My.God.

    :O

  • I always think of strange and tragic images to go with this music. Goes beautifully with cinema.

  • this is one of the few programmatic pieces that i can actually imagine in my mind clearly

  • I am reading comments by two micro-brains - life is too short, grow up and enjoy the music!

  • Jonathan Creek Theme !

  • Is this by the Philharmonia Orchestra?

  • I love this piece to death :)

  • If you guys like this check out the finale of Carnival of the Animals. I find it's fun to run around in circles while you listen. And remember, kiddies, always listen to classical music with the volume FULL BLAST ! (it'll really freak out your parents, for one thing)

  • Thank you -3 it!

  • Aca Deca

  • Thumbs if you immediately think of the Gentlemen from Buffy.

  • This is simply an amazing piece. I like Saint-Saens in general, though. He made some great songs.

  • Grimm!!!

take a while till found it.. now i am happy

    :)

  • Took me a while to find this song after hearing it in Grimm.

  • Ahh, based on a poem y Henri Cazalis. 12 tones from the harp imitate the church bell, violin represents death itself, and the violin is tuned in scoratora(not sure if I spelled it right) which I believe is a lowered 3rd degree. The xylophone represents the skeletons dancing.

  • @F34RxTh3x3nD "Scordatura" is the word you're looking for!

  • @ideassleep which i believe means "miss tuning" in Italian, hey though you have to give me credit for being only 16

  • @F34RxTh3x3nD No we don't. Teenagers deserve no credit for anything. And it's "mistuning".

  • @Supermassively Ohh yeah, they're only the future generation. Yup you shouldn't reward the few that actually have the right mind to actually think. I dont know about your metropolis, but mine is full of retards.

  • @F34RxTh3x3nD Yes, they're the future generation, and they're fucking stupid, so we're all screwed.

  • @Supermassively someones a bit brash

  • @aerichthelime You confuse "brashness" and "honesty".

  • @Supermassively you confuse "honesty" with "making foolish, sweeping generalizations"

  • @aerichthelime You fail to understand that most generalizations have a strong foundation in reality.

  • @Supermassively no, i see they can have grains of truth, but as a young person and teenager, i find sweeping statements like that not only wrong but personally insulting. Saying shit about an entire demographic is always going to offend people man

  • @aerichthelime Then why are you making this self-defeating effort here? You only confirm my statement with your behavior.

  • @Supermassively Aha, nice try, but again I'm gonna have to call you out for being in no way rational.

  • @aerichthelime Facts are always rational. I'm sorry that you fail to see that.

  • @Supermassively k cool.

  • @Supermassively *any credit, that was a double negative, so you basically just said teenagers deserve credit for anything, so thanks ;)

  • @123ringwormz123 You're a fucking moron, aren't you? "No credit for nothing" would be a double negative. "No credit for anything" is a perfectly valid statement. Christ, the internet needs an 18+ age requirement with an intelligence test. Please spend less time on YouTube and more time in English class. Thanks.

  • @Supermassively sorry i actually read your comment wrong, i thought it said *no credit for nothing, and im actually in Honors English II at the nicest school in my county. im so dearly sorry to piss you off so much, but please, remove the stick from your ass, because there is no point in living if you are just going to be crotchety and mean, that helps nobody, and just because you cant be happy doesnt mean that you have to drag everyone else down along with you. Why live if you dont enjoy it?

  • @123ringwormz123 You might want to get a refund on your English class.

  • @Supermassively What soul destroying shortcoming do you have to make you feel the need to walk around and be the self appointed arbiter of intelligence, through, what is, may I add, a terrible way of measuring it. To be frank, nobody cares if grammar isn't perfect on the internet, we aren't writing a book.

  • @SquareEyes642 Damn, you've got some issues. Why are you getting so defensive? Who appointed you "Defender of Stupid People"?

  • @Supermassively Oh no, see due to your evident lack of understanding of a few simple sentences you have simply failed to grasp my point, I was criticising you for being a self entitled arse, the defense, while entirely justified, was a by-product.

I think language analysis is part of English, maybe you need to go back a few years too?

  • @SquareEyes642 Self-entitled? What do I feel I'm entitled to? Your posts have no real point or anything concrete to respond to. Why don't you just give it up? And while you're at it, give up on life altogether.

  • This was a GENIUS !

  • My friend, who is right next to me, just said "hey, that's the song they used in the Jameson's commercial!" Unlike most people, however, I actually appreciate the fact that modern ideas can bring classic things (if you'll excuse the pun) new life.

  • @KingOfKatamari Sounds like when you play the William Tell Overture to people who only know the Lone Ranger. Damn, we're dated. No one remembers the Lone Ranger Theme!!! We're better off making "Kill the Wabbit!" / Wagner jokes!!

  • @TheREXTIZOC Well, as it so happens, I'm only 17, so take that as you will.

  • Such an awesome piece, love it so much.

  • rememeber studying this back in school 20 years ago

  • @Jynx215 weed oviously.

  • Always reminds me of "Faust" for some reason

  • @ThisisTedWells It always reminds me of Faust too, but I know for me it's because the first time I heard it was in the movie Tombstone during the Faust play.

  • @writerofsorts Wow, that is exactly the reason. I used to watch that movie when I was a kid, just occurred to me

  • 29 people are listening to this song from the grave :-p

  • I close my eyes and lose myself and all my worries and cares when I listen to this piece.

  • First heard this in Tombstone.

  • First time i heard this song was in the original Alone in the Dark. It made me a classical music lover

  • @enzerukage1

  • @chisanaAi

LOL!! Tutu is what got me thinking about this piece!

  • this is intense.i like

  • these pictures are trippy.....I noticed that violin at around 5:30 and it looked like it was playing itself...

  • Want to try something fun?

    1. Spend the night in an unfamiliar place (preferably one with high windows that throw sharp shadows of waving branches on the walls)

    2. Stay awake, alone, until two or three in the morning

    3. While staying awake, read a little Poe, a little Lovecraft, a little Maupassant...

    4. Play this song

    5. See if you can get to sleep

    6. Accidentally attack your S.O. after he/she stumbles over your not-sleeping form

    7. Bonus points if it's on Halloween!

  • Brilliant song. :]

  • It is not the video that's important here, but the music. And it is beuatiful! Thank you!

  • i read on wikipedia that when this piece first debuted, it wasn't recieved well by critics or audiences.

what the hell were they smoking?????

  • @Jynx215 Ludwig van Beethoven

  • @Jynx215 same for more than half of Beethoven's symphonies : /

  • @Jynx215 Pretentious snobs don't know what good music is.

  • that is a piece of the haunted castle in the Efteling

  • What interpretation is this?

  • This interpretation always makes me think of a Venetian masquerade ball. It's darkly beautiful.

  • I'm so gonna use this as micspam.

  • @3:13

Hey, isn't that the violin (or rather a screenshot) from the spookslot from Efteling?

(Efteling, an amusement park at the netherlands, for those who wonder)

Nice, finally heard the entire track. Thanks a lot, I knew I heard the song somewhere before. Never knew it was a well known classic piece.

    Man lernt nie aus, hach~...

  • @Externica It is, I live in the Netherlands, I've been in the Efteling.

  • @LaNathaLire

Ah, good to know. Thanks. :)

Has been a few years since I was at de Efteling myself. I'd like to go there again. It's a bit far, but not too far from where I live.

  • Nice recording - St. Saëns is one of my favorite composers (along with Schubert!) and his intense lyricism and interesting musical ideas are some of the reasons I like to perform his works....m

  • h, a, double l, o, w, double e, n spells halloween!

  • @moritamola I learned how to play this piece in the junior high school band. We performed it at the end of October, which corresponds to Halloween in the U.S. Our band conductor/teacher helped us not to be scared by the "macabre-ness" of the piece by joking: "Oh, there goes the Wicked Witch of the West!" We were only 12- and 13-year-old kids so we needed all the help we could get. The eerie beginning was played by the clarinets.

  • Thank you for posting this marvelous interpretation!!!

However, could you please tell us which recording, which orchestra is playing, who's conducting, and who plays first violon...??? as "maloune63" had the genius to ask you two weeks ago...

    Thanks again...

  • I adore Saint-Saens. He makes my kind of music! Thank you very much for sharing.

  • me encanta la "historia" que cuenta esta cancion

  • hermoso...

  • How to pronounce his name??

  • @vdoo84 camil sain sens

  • @vdoo84 Sharls Ca Meal Sane Sawn.

  • @gordongate : Thinking of Bach as not a part of interesting composers says a lot about the relevance of your comment.

  • Merci pour cette magnifique version. Mais pourriez-vous me donner le nom du chef d'orcheste ainsi que celui du Violon. Encore Merci

  • this is so beautiful, passionate and strong! I am moved to my very core...can´t stop listening to it

  • Such a master piece!

  • @TITUSDODA Myself again, I love hard rock/metal but I still like this so much!!!

  • A haunting masterpiece. Check out Franz Liszt's transcription of this piece for the piano, it's simply amazing.

  • whoever dislikes this song is definitely a skeleton. Thumbs up if you agree!

  • this would be a bitchin' wedding song...with a properly choreographed dance of couse

  • this song is used in the efteling in the netherland for a ghost atraction cald the spook slot i beleave its the ghost mansion in usa

  • I remeber hearing this in a brilliant Dario Argento tribute, but alas, it got taken down.

  • i love this song!!

  • @gordongate you are being ignorant. the reason you were taught Bach, Mozart and Beethoven in school is because they were the greatest. you just need to expand your knowledge in classical music. talk to me in 10 years.

  • @jorgeoscar1000 You're the one that's ignorant. Bach, Mozart and Beethoven are not the "greatest" objectively, that's just your opinion, they are taught in school because they are popular. Popularity does not equal quality, either.

  • @ArlyPwnsYou Fully Agreed! :D

  • This is so sick, this and 'Fossils' as well

  • The green Violin is from Spookslot (Haunted castle) in Efteling Holland, If you love this music you should watch " Spookslot"

  • @Berowra290997 Yes, they used a variation of the Danse Macabre as the shows theme.

  • we have a big haunted house in holland with this song playing the whole time.

  • Robert DiNero?

  • ich spiel das auch^^ and...... I LOVE THIS!

  • Lovely! ^&^

  • On my own early in life I came to hear classical music from my brother-in-law who had a love of this music, jazz, pop and folk music that survived with him as a 17 year old in the Korean War and from this I came to find out that eternity has nothing to do with time, but it is a place where you go and music can take you there, my fellow travelers, and show you the cosmos as no other entity can.

  • ses beau vive Camille Saint Saens

  • absolutely love this piece of music we studied it in music at school when i was 14 think alot of people my age (19) could benefit from listning to music that isnt run for a voice box thingy haha 1st just pure music.

  • One of the reasons Bach is still being played and studied after all these years (other than his absolute technical perfection) is that his work means something different to each listener and performer. Is there emotion? I certainly believe so, but it is hard to pinpoint exactly what he's trying to say.

That being said, overtly emotional composers (whose work I also deeply admire) like Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, or barber are probably better introduction to classical. Firebird Suite forever!

  • I'm gonna defend Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, 'cause they've all done some awesome stuff, but I agree with your point. The fact that people think of classical music as boring only shows that they've never really listened to more than one or two pieces.
