  • START THIS SONG AT 6:40 AND ITS AMAZING....MUCH BETTER THAN THE FIRST SHIT

  • @HumanAccount Fuck off.

  • An artist; artist. Able to articulate concepts, ideas and fantasies though a child's playfulness, with an adults intellect.

  • Her songs are like poetry. I wish she would come to the Bay!

  • not a big fan of joanna newsum, but damn a triple album? Any one that can do that has my respect.

  • This song is fantastic but I really can't put the story together.

  • @alayduhh It's the story of Lola Montez (Elisa Gilbert) and Ludwig II of Bavaria (often called Louis II in English). The conservatives in parliament in Bavaria, angered by Ludwig's elevation of his mistress, the exotic dancer Lola Montez, to the nobility (among other slights) depose him at the height of their romance. They both flee the country; she waits for him and they never see each other again. I think she's drunk during the train bit, and recounting the events after they occurred.

  • @Jordarnm well hey thanks for the insight!

  • @alayduhh None of this bit's in the song, but I imagine Lola Montez getting drunk backstage after a show in Castlemaine (an Australian mining town where she performed after leaving Bavaria), telling her dresser about when she was beloved to the King of Bavaria, with the telling getting increasingly emotional and erratic as she gets to the most painful bit - having to flee and never seeing her Louis again.

  • @Jordarnm and I thought Lola was a tarantula (doing the 'spider dance', catching flies, etc.)

  • @Shiuy The spider stuff is a reference to Lola Montez's act - there are a few books, films, etc. about her with "spider dance" in the title, referring to her most notorious on-stage performance, where she reportedly wore fake spiders stitched into the underside of her skirts. She'd shake them out, lifting her skirts higher and higher until the fact that she wasn't wearing any underwear was evident to the audience.

  • @Shiuy I think the "shrieking six-legged millionaire" she shakes out of her skirts is a reference to Ludwig I, who's referred to as "daddy longlegs" throughout the song, and was brought to ruin through being smitten with her. A daddy longlegs can be either an arachnid of the order Opiliones, also known as harvestmen (eight legs) or an insect belonging to the family Tipulides, also known as a crane fly. Newsom is using the latter, I think - hence "You caught a fly, floating by".

  • I don't know how people can listen to new shit on the radio after hearing any song by Joanna Newsom.

  • I love this song. Her voice relaxes me for some reason. She's just so peaceful:)

  • Everyone that dislikes this song is most likely a waste of space.

  • I love how it builds up and abruptly goes quiet at 9:44 - 9:49. ★-★

  • Such a beautiful song, I cant get enough of it.

  • Goosebumps. This song is so beautiful, and the OOH OOH OOWOWOWOW part is so catchy. Too bad it's album only :(

  • Whoa, like a story.

    But I just love it.

  • Wow, she is spectacular. Echos of Kate Bush in this song. Hope it's OK if I say that.

  • 14 people don't know good music when they hear it.

  • I have one of her albums... first I've heard from this one.

I hope this is based on some novel, or something (it'd have to be an odd story! ... middle 1/3rd of which the girl is dead or half dead!). The lyrics seem pretty off the wall. The countess of Lansfeld, the King of Bavaria, miss Gilbert, Castlemaine ... And I never much liked narrative ('ballads' as they once were called) lyrics myself.

  • @marmas58ink This song is actually about a real person! Look up Lola Montez, the true story is just as interesting as the songs lyrics.

  • @allbman Thanks a lot. I read the wikapedia description... Maybe next time I listen the words won't seem quite so odd and obscure!

  • 8:50 onward is so catchy...

    Oow OOOW, ooowooowooowooowooowooooow.... *bobbing head*

  • kate bushesque

  • The ending is so open..like it's asking a question

  • This song, the style of it, goes back to ancient times, like when Sappho wrote poems and people put poetry to music. It's pretty amazing in our day and age of chorus, verse, chorus stuff.

  • When ever I have guests over for dinner I play Joanna Newsom as quiet background music.

    Classy as fuck.

  • she may be the greatest poet alive

  • @MaryJoMcCormic the world is busted homie (even if i like her)

  • Wikepedia "Lola Montez".

  • I feel like swimming in this song. That or I already am.

  • This song is an adventure.

  • I love her voice at 2:28! I dont know why but I really love that line!

  • not yet sure whether i like it or hate it....peach pear plum is class, some of these sound like bad folk at first listen though

  • @7kurisu they're all just her doing what she wants to do. i respect her so much i don't even care to criticize. i just listen.

  • this reminds me of kate bush.........alot

  • This is one of the best songs I have ever heard. It's so beautiful but kind of scary too. I am a new fan of Joanna's music, and all I can say is that I am so glad I stumbled across one of her songs a few weeks ago. What a stunningly unique musician.

  • Gänsehaut - schaurig, traurig. Märchenhaft!

  • I am so sad that I completely missed her when she came to Tampa. Please come back Joanna!

  • I have 3 Cannibal Corpse albums, 4 Black Dahlia Murder albums, every Tool album, a vast array of Thrash/Tech Death/Death/Black/Melodic Death metal albums... yet I only have ONE Joanna Newsom album. I need to make some improvisations.

  • @FatKidVocals I think it's interesting/awesome that some extreme metal fans seem to enjoy Joanna too. My first favorite musical artist was The Who... and now I'm listening to this/reading your comment right after listening to Disavowed's second album. I think it's just that some people acquire an overall appreciation for music and musicianship, and windup liking a variety that's as wide as these pieces of music are different... and that's a beautiful thing.

  • @FatKidVocals improvements?

  • @salsachihuahua I cant believe I didnt catch that. Thank you, haha.

  • @FatKidVocals I couldn't resist :p

  • @FatKidVocals I went from metal to her too

  • @FatKidVocals

    Fucking love you.

  • @FatKidVocals You have really bad taste in music then, Black Dahlia Murder is fucking terrible. By the way, the word is improvements.

  • @FatKidVocals Black dahlia murder is for pussies, keep listening to joanna

  • @elamodelmerol You don't have any metal bands Favorited for me to judge you by. Who is good metal? (my tastes are clearly displayed on my profile) No hostility meant by this.

  • @xxdanxexx If you think I don't have any good metal band favorited, then you're far worse lost than I thought

  • @FatKidVocals Listen to better metal and hopefully also A Fine Frenzy, Lenka, and Anna Calvi.

  • Am I the only one who is spookily reminded of Kate Bush in her younger days while listening to this?

  • @Minano no, that's exactly what i thought when i started listening to joanna newsom!

  • wow a song documenting the fascinating story of Lola Montez, Joanna u are a genius!!!

  • what is this song about...i like it but it kinda sounds like babble

  • @HumanAccount Lola Montez

  • angel angel angel voice

  • I love how long this one is!

  • There are about three moments in this song which make all the hairs on my body stand on end. Beautiful.

  • debate that often goes through my head:

"i need to be out of the house in fourteen minutes. that gives me just enough time to put on my shoes, listen to 'have one on me', experience sixteen emotions, and still get to work on time."

  • I'm almost sorry to say, too bad she finally learnt how to sing. Her voice used a little more... special

  • I am American too and I think she is one of the most talented, intelligent, passionate, original, artful, and poetic souls alive. I am one day older than her. How cool is that?

  • What is meant by expression "have one on me"? in the context of the song and in every else context... thanks!

  • @nikkei88 It's usually an offer to buy something on someone's behalf, like a drink at a bar. I think she means it sarcastically in this song. "Won't you drink to how you broke my heart", that sort of thing.

  • I absolutely love this. it's probably my favorite song by her, and joanna newsom is my favorite artist.

I love how the album have one on me she kind of did a different style, she made it longer and more complex like jazz or classical music. i guess people didn't like that cause most music these days is like 3-4 minutes long, but whatever it's still amazing

  • Okay, I can see why some people don't favour this song particularly, but I can't see a reason for showing extreme distaste for it... how can you hate it? You may not 'like' it, but is it really so bad that you couldn't listen to it again...?

  • @vishiqualle It's not your genre of music, it's not that it's lame, it's just not your type. Everyone is different.

  • @twizzlers9 I am into every style of music there is for the most part.

  • this is sooooo horrible!!! what is the point of this song? (other than to contemplate suicide?) geez! This is SubPop Records #1 pick of 2010 too! yikes!!

  • @daffypunker oh God! You claim this to be suicidal? This is a record about life and the world. In the spirit of "Blood on the Tracks" and "Hounds of Love" and the other fantastic album from 2010 "The Queen of Denmark". You don't like this then you don't like life either. These albums are about rising in triumph from the shit life throws at you, they are the exact opposite of suicidal. This is truly the finest album of 2010.

  • I never realized how awesome the lyrics arei n this song.

Here's Lola -- Ta Da! To do her spider dance for you.

I still haven't got into the third part of the song.

She's the only artist that I can say that each part of the song requires 'getting into it.' It's just from pure length. She has the biggest faith to reward ratio I've ever seen. In the sense that you have to have faith that you will eventually be blown away. (hint: It always happens, "Only Skin" is a great example)

  • Love this! I love all of Joanna's work.

  • first time I have herd of her and it's good. Love the melody and the instruments.

  • Any interpretations of the opening lines?

  • @smellslikechildren1

Someone suggested a one of those people who taste food for a king to see if it has been poisoned & died as a result of drinking a poisoned drink ("well that's why they keep them around") ...i think the black guard was blamed and beheaded

  • this is brilliance!

  • her voice is still much beautiful, but i miss the old voice. of course she couldn't help it..she has vocal chord nudule which took 2 months to recover from, and she couldn't cry, speak, nor sing that whole time. once she recovered, he voice changed, naturally. Whether it was for the worse or the best...it is up to you. She is amazing on both albums<3

  • This is a big improvement over the previous albums. Before, the "uniqueness" factor was just too much. Now it blends seamlessly with the music, as I feel it should. The songwriting is much better now, too. I just think she's really come into her own with this recent release.

  • @FuinLovesPie: Wow, what're you doing, just trolling around all of Joanna's videos and telling people she 'sings the wrong way.' Just shut up and give it a rest with your high and mighty 'singing knowledge.' No one here cares, and really, all you're doing is going around making yourself seem like an ego filled idiot.

  • @ScribTheTreeHugger But she technically was singing the wrong way. Anatomically, at least. The way she was singing was doing harm to her vocal chords, despite the fact that it wasn't bad musically. I like her old voice as well as her new one but if we're gonna be technical, yes she was singing the wrong way.

  • @grungeisdull There is no wrong way.. Only ways that do or don't fit in with certain schools of thought. Right and wrong is utterly subjective, most of all in art. I can see where you're coming from, I have extensive classical singing training myself, but tradition is just.. historical opinion, if you will. There's much to learn from it, but it isn't law.

Aaanyway, I adore this new album. It took some time to get under my skin, but she has really matured musically. Can't wait to spin the vinyl.

  • @thetwentyfourth Damn, and I was trying so hard to sound smart. :) But I shouldn't have even gotten involved, the comments on this video should be about the beautiful song playing, not what everyone's opinions are. My apologies.

  • @grungeisdull Aw no need to apologize! Hope my comment didn't come across as an attack, I'm just in the habit of advocating subjectivity whenever I see an absolute statement. After all, often the most unique, beautiful or revolutionary things go against the norm. Joanna's unique vocal approach was what initially attracted me to her music.

I don't think you should hold back from sharing your thoughts. Even when people disagree it can spark thought and make everyone more aware :) Peace.

  • i finally controlled my ADHD long enough to listen to the whole song and it truly is brilliant

  • each album she gets better and better

  • Jazz Acid Folk Epic

  • @JoeBloggo400 hahah perfect.

  • At first I thought wow, after a while I was thinking umm WhatTheFuck? generally wow but like what is this?

  • on a first listening it is reminding me a lot of Kate Bush!

  • Finally! She can sing finally! Now it's beautiful.

  • @elschan What a stupid thing to say

  • too...long...A/D/D...kicking in....

  • @boo22196 oh but it just gets better and better!

  • This is more like it.

I had problems with some of her early vocals at times. There were parts in Milk Eyed Mender (and even in YS) where she simply affected a shrill squawk in lieu of singing.

Whatever the circumstances behind her change in vocal style, it's a change for the better, IMO.

  • How lucky are we! I can't believe that we got a triple album from this godess. Wonderful treat for Joanna Newsom fans! It's a magnificent album.

  • Rather like this change of style - shows her discipline and control. She is now packing in more than just talent - added experience and bredth from other genres. For all her fans - you were open-minded enough to fall in love with her old sound - give the new one the same trial.

  • She's such an amazing lyricist.

  • 6:45 - 8:42

It's the most stunning moment in a song I have ever heard.

  • @mgfanlove

I could listen to that part a million times over.

  • @mgfanlove

I think the end portion of baby birch wins for me, but that portion too... Fuck. SO powerful. I have no idea how she does it. Can not fathom it. I"ve been trying to reach her level of power in my music for 2 years. Can't even flick it.

  • "Meanwhile I will raise my glass

to how you made me fast and expendable,

and I will drink to your excellent health

    and your cruelty."

One of the best lines ever. Not just in song, ever. I read Joanna's lyrics to people as poetry sometimes.

  • @PoetryAddict8

Samesies. This stuff is T.S. Eliot put to music.

  • @mgfanlove

Absolutely, yes. It's full of this strange energy, this emotion that can only be explained by the vague imagery and evocative music of Miss Newsom.

  • @mgfanlove My favourite part as well! On the dot, chiiills!

  • Well that was a very peculiar song! Beautfiul nonetheless, in a sort of "film of a plastic bag blowing around a carpark" kinda way :L

  • I will drink to your excellent health, and your cruelty. <3

  • first, the words dont reflect the meaning of the words.longlegs reflect to everyone.mandolin...good. her... song said him. doubt...and betrade...hurt. aka heres to you...love. and heres to a happy ending. Last end, the lyrics reflected the song, a run down of the song... broken heart and disdained.

  • masterpiece

  • This is a great song for real.

  • "But all these songs, when you and I are long gone, will carry one. Mud in your eye".

i thinks this album has a really really good songwritting!

  • joanna is unique wich we need in this era of corporate dummies!

  • joanna has been gone for a while and i'm so fucking ecstatic she's back oh thank goodnesss. (:

  • These long songs are perfect for laying in the sun by the riverbank on a rare, but beautiful, summer's afternoon.

  • This is my favorite song this year. It's fucking epic!

  • I wonder is she did all this in one constant recording, or if she recorded each verse and then they cut it together...

  • It's worth looking up Lola Montez, and even seeing the film by Ophuls.

  • I hope to see her and Roy Harper in Brussels in May. As an old fan of Roy I hope to hear some of his stuff as well.

  • i have a theory this song could be about the french revolution.

  • @emoboi1031 Actually, I read somewhere it is about a 19th century courisane, Lola Mentez.

  • i wouldn't be lying if i anticipating this being my #1 favorite song of this year by the time i start making my top 20 lists.

  • At about two minutes in, it starts to sound like Penelope by Of Montreal and also a little bit like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

  • now i can traverse the lead expanse of time to my home where my dad died. i will like this music.

  • 6.6 luv it 6.6

  • An unique and original songs as usual from Joanna I must say. I just love the second half part of the song where the lyric start "...I knew that no other could ever love me as you loved..." etc..., I think the composition of the melody is just new and genial...can't stop to listen it and singing. I really consider amazing the way how Joanna writes but I don't get crazy for the subject chosen from her in this song. I also think that she has just to be more clear on what she want say on lyrics.

  • Well done Miss Newsom, you have lost me in your music! Wonderful.

  • Simply amazing!!!!

  • THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING. I can't get over how good this song is.

  • fucking amazing song

I cannot stop listening to it!

  • this song is simmilar to something by kate bush. i like

  • this song brought me to such tears. She has a beautifully unique voice. its just how much sould she puts in her music that makes it beautiful. I love it.♥♥

  • Nice, I heard this on triple J.

  • wow her new voice is really theatery

  • The lyrics remind me of King Crimson... only King Crimson was probably on acid when they wrote those lyrics so at least I feel they're being honest.

  • this is so beautiful...

  • Loving this album. Have noted the reviewers who don't "get" the structure of this track, but I have a theory.

Harp passage at the beginning is held in the later part of Montez's life, as she describes the reaction to her being seen how she turned out, the middle passage being a flashback, and the reprisal of the first harp passage, and "Daddy longlegs are you proud?" Is like her asking him, seeing him in person again, if he's proud how she turned out.

Just a guess here, I could be wrong.

  • I love how it starts as this really slow almost New Orleans guitary jazz song then switches to brilliant minstrel type classical then to this jolly minute chant like a band of gypsies thru a forest than back again to the jazz and how the begining is really the end. Joanna Newsom=Awesomesauce

  • New Orleans "harp" jazz song! Thats better.

  • This song is so awesome.

Just heard it for the first time right here.

It's the first song i've heard off the new album so far. She is gonna be on TV tonight playing one of these new songs.

    Im excited

  • So good. This and Good Intentions Paving Company do it for me completely.

  • Amazing.

    I love this so much.

    Yaaay.

  • what a wonderful album..

  • I love this record. Absolutely. I admire everybody who is able to compose three great albums in one. And although the songs are quite similar, it´s not boring.

  • ¿What do you think 'bout this new record? I really think it songs are beatifull, but I'm still prefering "The Milk-Eyed Mender", I used to love the simplicity of her old songs; this ones have a lot of arrangements, and she's singing different, closer to Jazz.

    Whatever...still lovin' Joanna.

  • Indeed, her songs are more than beautiful. I get what you mean though. I liked her album Ys better for its "rawness", you know? But then again she's doing something different every album, adding different styles and it's actually pretty cool. Very unique

  • @ManuelBarrosR I think she's toned down her singing style because of the vocal chord nodules she got a while back.

I still love her, too. She's always shifting and changing her style, and I'm just kind of along for the ride.

    <3

  • @superbobfulspiffy No doubt, I'm for the ride too. Still love her....a lot.

  • @ManuelBarrosR she suffered from a vocal cord nodule that changed her voice

  • @Shinnyuu2 Because the way she was singing was wrong and any singing instructor could've told her that she was damaging her own voice by singing that way.

  • @FuinLovesPie thats not necessarily true ...right or wrong... shes still been more successful than any of us here ...she'll be remembered for it to

  • The second half is so powerful and beautiful. I love all the changes that happen within the 10 minutes of this song.

  • thanks for the lyrics.

  • this song reminds me a bit of Fiona Apple. I would absolutely love to hear these two ladies do something together. Joanna's unique and gentle voice with Fiona's strong and sultry pipes... i think my heart would explode.

  • well actually this isn't the song that reminds me, the first song i heard on NPR's stream of the album is... but still!

  • This song is soooo good!

  • Great triple album, enough said.
