@Risket I'm trying to change the settings for Controller 1 and it keeps saying "Sorry the input selection made is already in use". And even when no game is playing, it doesn't let me switch the input. This is enough for me to stop using Project 64 entirely.
@darknumber000 Are you trying to program the buttons for certain actions? I haven't used P64 in really long time but from what I remember I always had problems programming the buttons. If an action is already programmed to another button, you have to change that buttons programming before moving that programming to another button. Example: If Button 1 is "A" and you want Button 2 to be "A" you have to change Button 1 to something else (like "R"), then set Button 2 to "A"
What's the name of your gamepad in 4:37 ? It looks quite nice with its 6 main buttons. I'm sure that it is perfect to play N64 games because the positions of the main buttons are similar to the N64 controller
@55mizar55 Saitek P880 Dual Analog Gamepad. It works really well for N64 games. Those 6 buttons are perfect for programming the A and B buttons and the four C buttons.
It's just programming L, R and Z that can be annoying. In most games L and R basically do the same thing. So I'll program R on the R button and program Z on the L button. Also, the joysticks act as buttons too if you press them, but sometimes it can be difficult to press them without accidentally moving them in a direction.
@RecordsDigital Yes definitely. This was just demonstrating the performance on the computer I had at that time (which I got before Windows 7 came out).
@masterbate23 Yeah it was free back when I made this.... back when I USED it. I'm sorry. I haven't really needed to us an N64 emulator since they started charging for it. I found a free version. I just Google "Free N64 Emulator" and saw Project 64 was available at Softpedia. Look for the link "Download Project64 1.6 Free - A great, free Nintendo 64 emulator"
@BlackHatFTW Yup! Haha it died within a year. I'd press the power button and the power light would light up but the fan wouldn't come on and the screen was black. To fix it would cost the same as buying a new computer and they would just replace it with another defective model. I went with a Gateway next. I've had it two years and it still runs like brand new. I'll probably never go back to HP again after learning that they knowingly shipping thousands and thousands of defective computers.
when i try to run a game it says the default or selected input is missing or invalid what do i do wen i try to select an audio or video input nothing is there :( someone help
@MellowCruisin Yes multiplayer will work like normal. It's best if you have multiple controllers to plug in via USB but in the controller settings you can choose which USB controller will be for Player1, 2, 3 and 4 and you can modify the controls for each controller.
Hey perhaps you can help me. I have project 64 however I have 1 problem. what are the controls for the yellow up down left right keys (Yellow Arrow Buttons) If you could tell me these controls I would apprecaite it. For the key board is what Im saying.

@SensiRootsBoy Thanks. My wife's uncle got it at a garage sale and it was missing tuning keys. He thought I'd like it and could fix it up but since I already had a better acoustic in perfect condition I just kept this one around for decoration. And to collect dust. Also, my cat loved poking his head in the guitar. He never found anything but he was always like, "Maybe THIS time!"
@jasonvoorhees1428 You don't NEED one to get Project 64 to work. By default it uses your keyboard keys for all the controls but it's kind of difficult to get used to. Getting a cheap USB controller with joysticks makes it much easier.
@mrLister3319 I have not tried it myself since I do not have a PS3 but "@ROGERDERBY" mentioned (a few comment pages back) that it can be done. You could probably contact them if you have any questions about using the PS3 controller with the emulator.
@kawaiifreak860 Yeah there are many emulators out there. Some will play certain games that other emulators will not. This was just a demonstration of the game play using P64 which is one of the more popular emulators.
@Risket Yeah an sorta the best really for the controller plug in.
1964 is ehhhh alright but you have to swap it's Direct 3D plug in with the one in project 64 as it sucks...so fucking much it's not funny it makes so many games unplayable espeically zelda. :/

I have a important question man. I have a Project64 Emulator and all my games work. I have a Windows 7 Labtop. How do I configure it to work? Because if you've seen the keyboard it's different then a desktops. I really want to play my games, But please get back to me!!
@brettbirnberg Go to the "Options" menu in Project64 and go to the "Configure Controller Plugin...". From there you can set which key controls each button. It's very difficult to use the keyboard keys for N64 games. Nothing can replace a joystick but using W, A, S, D could work too.

@prluxe If you pause it at about 0:10 seconds you can see a better image of the controller I'm using. It has six buttons numbered 1 through 6. I just duplicated the N64 controllers layout. Having buttons 1 and 3 set to B and A, then buttons 2, 4, 5, 6 being the C buttons.
ok your video shows that its possible to use usb ports but can i be any usb controller? you dont show HOW to install and usb controller and thats where i was lost @ so please help me
@tayj2 Usually when you get a USB controller it will come with a disc to install the drivers for it. As long as your computer recognizes that it's connected Project64 will be able to use it. Once plugged in go to the "Options" menu in Project64 and go to the "Configure Controller Plugin...". With your USB controller plugged in you would select it from the "Game Device" drop-down menu and check the box saying the Controller is plugged in.
@killdog102 I never had that problem but I also never used the emulator for long periods of time. The laptop I used in the video did eventually crash due to a motherboard defect. If you have that same computer you're lucky it's still working for you, but I recommend making frequent backups of important data. If it does have this same defect it will cost you almost as much as a new computer to have them fix their own mistake.
This best and only N64 emulator that works properly although a few game won't work on it like StarWars Rouge Squadron and with Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire that game half works and P64 has not been updated at all.Anyway RetroUsb has the best N64 controller to USB adapter but you may have to play with the analog dead zone option in P64.I'll just stick with my real N64 since I'm not a fan of emulation except on the Wii.

I HOPE I DIDNT BUY ALL THIS STUFF FOR NO REASON SOME PLEASE REPLY ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@vizzy285 It should work fine. As far as I know as long as it's a USB controller and has a driver than can be installed on your computer, the program should recognize it. If your controller doesn't come with an installation disc, see if your computer will install it automatically when inserting. I had to install the drivers on my computer seen in this video but when that computer died and I got a Windows 7 computer it installed automatically. If not you can Google drivers for it.
@venom581 At the time I made this video I had Windows Vista and there were only a few things about it I liked. I now have a newer laptop with Windows 7 and it is MUCH better. Huge improvement over Vista in my opinion. Plus with mine being 64-bit it handles things very fast.
Yes you can. Just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...."
By default the controls are set to your keyboard keys. You can change which key controls what and if you have a USB controller connected you can set the functions for each button on the controller.
i have the same hp dv6000 running vista and my shit gets an error with the video driver after a few mins of playing 007 on project64 1.6 . i had to delete that sh it . wish i had a better pc. and xp pro
Did your wireless card go out too? It seems to be a common problem with these laptops. Mine went out about six months ago. I've been using a Linksys USB Wireless Adapter since then.
No I'm talking about the built in WiFi. For the "Wireless" switch on the front directly under your left wrist while you're typing. That turns the WiFi off and on. There are a lot of HP and Compaq computers with motherboard defects that cause the built in WiFi to fail. I was just wondering if you've been as unfortunate as me and had to deal with this problem. If not you're lucky but it could still happen eventually.
hey i tried to download project 64 but after the download and that and download the rom it says good rom and it won't let me play can someone reply plz
I'm sorry I don't understand your question. Is the ROM not working or Project 64 not working? If it's the ROM try finding it somewhere else. Sometimes you just get a bad ROM or it just doesn't work for your system or something. It's happened to me and I just searched around for the ROM from somewhere else until I found one that worked. Sorry if this doesn't help. I don't really understand what you wrote.
Yes you can. In fact the default setting is the keyboard. Just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." and you can customize what each key controls.
got a question, will that controller work on a mac? and what ones do? i managed to get pj64 on my mac and though i'd rather just use a pc i just want to know
that controller is perfect for the 64 emulator i have that controller and the emulator the only button u need to figure out what to do for is z i just use like clicking the analog stick
I used the analog stick for Z for a while but kept having the problem of slipping and ending up going forward or something. I just use "R" for "Z" since "L" and "R" basically do the same time.
Can you please tell me how you got your red pointer to move how it should. Because when I use that red pointer it keeps bouncing back to where I first had it on screen. If you do not understand me check out my goldeneye video. Please help I have been looking for so long on how to solve this problem.
Nice music choice, lol @ the dinosaur hand reflection at 3:28 and the bathroom laptop placement. 5 stars for that ... the laptop specs like RAM, GPU type and CPU type would've been nice to list under "more info" if not in the video but oh well... all in all it's a quite capable gaming machine that you get to enjoy the good old classics on so that's cool.
Haha You're the first person to say anything about my hand puppet. I get bored sometimes and I start trying to entertain myself. Oh and I added those specs to the More Info column. The laptop isn't anything spectacular but the games run great on it.
Haha, I thought it was a fun "hidden bit" there and thanks for the specs, it's pretty amazing how mature the emulator has gotten over the years - I remember when it was in initial beta stages and it would barely run in slideshow mode (3-5fps) on a top end system of the time. The emulator's gotten so much better and even today's LOW END systems are better than the highest things we had back when it first showed up. I just re-watched the video to listen to the song again :-)
Yes you can! Once you plug it in and have it set up you just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." From there you can program the function for each button until you're comfortable.
I believe you can. I have not tried it but in Project64 you just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." From there you are able to program the controllers used for all four players. If you get it and plug in multiple controllers I'd love to know how it works!
hey i was wondering if someone could help me with the turok 2 rom. i think that its partly impossible to play without a joystick because when u try to switch weapons, you press a button that brings up all the weapons in a circle, but with only the directional keys i cant select many of the weapons. If anyone could help me solve this problem i would greatly appreciate it.
I ran into this problem also. I think it's best to make sure your controller has a joystick for this game. Even then it can be a bit tricky to select the weapon you want. It takes a bit of practice but a few levels into the game I had it down pretty well.
That specific controller is the "Saitek P880 Dual Analog Gamepad". Do a search on Google and you can find them for about $20 (on GoGamer). I've found it to be the perfect controller for playing N64 emulations because it has the six buttons that can be programmed for A, B and the four C buttons. Also the two joysticks and be pressed down serving as two additional buttons. I usually use one for Z if I don't need both L and R. Some games L & R do the same thing so I'll program one to be Z.
@Risket I'm trying to change the settings for Controller 1 and it keeps saying "Sorry the input selection made is already in use". And even when no game is playing, it doesn't let me switch the input. This is enough for me to stop using Project 64 entirely.

It's pretty cool. Not amazing but it is pretty entertaining. It doesn't take long to complete either.

that is true uninfortune get windows vista thats why i change to windows 7
venom581 2 years ago
@venom581 At the time I made this video I had Windows Vista and there were only a few things about it I liked. I now have a newer laptop with Windows 7 and it is MUCH better. Huge improvement over Vista in my opinion. Plus with mine being 64-bit it handles things very fast.

is there any way that you can use the keys on my laptop if so how can i set it up
babyjoker518 2 years ago
Yes you can. Just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...."
By default the controls are set to your keyboard keys. You can change which key controls what and if you have a USB controller connected you can set the functions for each button on the controller.

Did your wireless card go out too? It seems to be a common problem with these laptops. Mine went out about six months ago. I've been using a Linksys USB Wireless Adapter since then.
Risket 2 years ago
i use a router
macwanskater 2 years ago
hahaha! Ok. Nevermind. That's not what I was talking about, but yeah a router is how the internet gets to your computer.
Risket 2 years ago
wait you mean how the laptop came with that card in one of the slots on the right side?
macwanskater 2 years ago
No I'm talking about the built in WiFi. For the "Wireless" switch on the front directly under your left wrist while you're typing. That turns the WiFi off and on. There are a lot of HP and Compaq computers with motherboard defects that cause the built in WiFi to fail. I was just wondering if you've been as unfortunate as me and had to deal with this problem. If not you're lucky but it could still happen eventually.

hey i tried to download project 64 but after the download and that and download the rom it says good rom and it won't let me play can someone reply plz
DarkXLink12312 2 years ago
I'm sorry I don't understand your question. Is the ROM not working or Project 64 not working? If it's the ROM try finding it somewhere else. Sometimes you just get a bad ROM or it just doesn't work for your system or something. It's happened to me and I just searched around for the ROM from somewhere else until I found one that worked. Sorry if this doesn't help. I don't really understand what you wrote.
Risket 2 years ago
Yes you can. In fact the default setting is the keyboard. Just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." and you can customize what each key controls.

got a question, will that controller work on a mac? and what ones do? i managed to get pj64 on my mac and though i'd rather just use a pc i just want to know
finnthefilmmaker 2 years ago
I'm sure it would. If you were able to get PJ64 on your Mac the controller should work. Mac's are usually very good with recognizing USB devices.
Risket 2 years ago
that controller is perfect for the 64 emulator i have that controller and the emulator the only button u need to figure out what to do for is z i just use like clicking the analog stick
gryphster2 2 years ago
I used the analog stick for Z for a while but kept having the problem of slipping and ending up going forward or something. I just use "R" for "Z" since "L" and "R" basically do the same time.
Risket 2 years ago
Can you please tell me how you got your red pointer to move how it should. Because when I use that red pointer it keeps bouncing back to where I first had it on screen. If you do not understand me check out my goldeneye video. Please help I have been looking for so long on how to solve this problem.
ecartman12 2 years ago
Nice music choice, lol @ the dinosaur hand reflection at 3:28 and the bathroom laptop placement. 5 stars for that ... the laptop specs like RAM, GPU type and CPU type would've been nice to list under "more info" if not in the video but oh well... all in all it's a quite capable gaming machine that you get to enjoy the good old classics on so that's cool.
nickdotvr 2 years ago
Haha You're the first person to say anything about my hand puppet. I get bored sometimes and I start trying to entertain myself. Oh and I added those specs to the More Info column. The laptop isn't anything spectacular but the games run great on it.
Risket 2 years ago
Haha, I thought it was a fun "hidden bit" there and thanks for the specs, it's pretty amazing how mature the emulator has gotten over the years - I remember when it was in initial beta stages and it would barely run in slideshow mode (3-5fps) on a top end system of the time. The emulator's gotten so much better and even today's LOW END systems are better than the highest things we had back when it first showed up. I just re-watched the video to listen to the song again :-)

wud this wrk with a ps3 controller cuz
there usb
redyoshi777 2 years ago
Yes you can! Once you plug it in and have it set up you just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." From there you can program the function for each button until you're comfortable.
Risket 2 years ago
Can you by chance plug in two USB controllers to Play multilayer games?
cp10smash 3 years ago
I believe you can. I have not tried it but in Project64 you just go up to the "Options" menu and go to "Configure Controller Plugin...." From there you are able to program the controllers used for all four players. If you get it and plug in multiple controllers I'd love to know how it works!

hey i was wondering if someone could help me with the turok 2 rom. i think that its partly impossible to play without a joystick because when u try to switch weapons, you press a button that brings up all the weapons in a circle, but with only the directional keys i cant select many of the weapons. If anyone could help me solve this problem i would greatly appreciate it.
ricosuave3355 3 years ago
I ran into this problem also. I think it's best to make sure your controller has a joystick for this game. Even then it can be a bit tricky to select the weapon you want. It takes a bit of practice but a few levels into the game I had it down pretty well.

my Perfect Dark Rom dont work. Im lucky i still have the official game for N64 =P
ChrissA20 3 years ago
Emulating is awesome, I lost or sold all my favorite games on the N64 and regretted it...
What type of controller is that? Is that the best kind of controller to play the N64 games?
MajorasHexingRituals 3 years ago
That specific controller is the "Saitek P880 Dual Analog Gamepad". Do a search on Google and you can find them for about $20 (on GoGamer). I've found it to be the perfect controller for playing N64 emulations because it has the six buttons that can be programmed for A, B and the four C buttons. Also the two joysticks and be pressed down serving as two additional buttons. I usually use one for Z if I don't need both L and R. Some games L & R do the same thing so I'll program one to be Z.
Risket 3 years ago
the best type of controller to use is a xbox 360 wired controller. its works great!
