  • Totally dreamy sequence...

  • Best "You have failed horribly" screen ever. I never got tired of seeing it and hearing that haunting music.

  • "Fry's Turkish Delight....Full of eastern promise"

  • sounds like a Cadburys Flake advert, amazing game tho

  • @iosnick or the old frys turkish delight advert :)

  • I'm appreciating this more now than I did in 1989 for some reason. Quite a poignant little death sequence...

Back in the day I just wanted to press fire and start again as quickly as possible. I don't think I even noticed the skeleton lying there.

  • The walking away silhouette could be the soul of the dead beast. In the end, death was the only way to release from their miserable existence.

  • Does this remind anyone else of the Game Over screen from Donkey Kong Country?

  • @SergeantLuke I just came from the Donkey Kong Country game over screen video :)

  • I cried at the game over because my main character died and in my mind it just tells me that his mission for vengance is a failure and he lived like beast and died like a beast. Damn you cant get quality games like this anymore

  • the shadowy figure in the distance i presume to be the final boss of the game, since when you beat the game you get the same forest screen in reds, no skeleton, and the figure is gone.

  • I love the color pallet they used.

  • Loving that Korg M1 ;0)

  • This is one game over screen that makes me actually THINK about death. I was gettin' all introspective n' stuff.

  • Life is a Mystery . . .

  • Although the entire game itself is a state of the art, when I saw this final sequence I could not believe it. The soundtrack and his atmosphere is beautiful !!!

  • These games weren't cared about for a reason....

  • What do you mean by atmospheric?

  • oh no charizard what happened =(

  • sad

  • Oh this was so annoying - die, wait 30 sec, watch this without possibility to skip, change disc, wait 30 sec, press button, change disc, wait 30 sec, die....

  • ah the joy of the C64 cartridge version which u could skip this altho I never did because I enjoyed the music lol.

  • Sure remember seeing this scene many times. lol

I could play all the way through SOTB, but would die at the end guy every time. >:^(

  • This and Donkey Kong country's game over scene always made me feel like an asshole for killing them.

  • Hahaha, it just took me 17 years or so to notice the hooded figure in the background.

  • @Gamewitzer where is it in thee middle rite lol cuz i dnt see it lol

  • @Gamewitzer At first I was scanning the whole screen looking for a hooded figure until I barely noticed where it was. Good eye you've got XD

  • Rest In Peace, Aarbron. :(

Still a great game, though. :)

  • I guess I died a thousand times in this game but the game over-sequence was sooo beautiful.

  • lol, I aint seen that for years. brings back memories

  • Man, I love the soundtrack and atmosphere of this game so much. It's still got one of the best art styles and presentations 20 years later. I wish Sony would do a HD version on PSN, with the complete soundtrack (and perhaps easier difficulty!).

  • @Triggerhappytel /slaptheshitoutofyou i think they should stick to games worth remaking that were more then fucking walking with an occasional jump and punching......

  • @lawlawlowned and nintendo makes another mario...

at least this game deserves a lot more that what mario has, eating mushrooms and stepping on toads is easymode.

  • @Triggerhappytel

Yes, but no HD please, I think we all like pixels, contrary to today's youth :)

  • @TyltyI

thanks to blurry TV's, they looked much better in the day, i think the sound quality was better back then too, of course industry has scripts to dissolve my theory, but it's truth vs their scripts

  • @TyltyI ...but you can do HD sprites and have them look good (noone's quite done it yet but that's becasue they hire rubbish artists to do it) Imagine a full remake of this game with the same gameplay and HD sprites drawn by the original artist?

  • I never see this screen in my SotB versions, because I only have the U.S. and Japanese Sega Genesis versions of this game. :(

Anyway, the skeleton IS Aarbron's (the main character you play as) skeleton, correct? The skull shape and everything is the same as the in-game sprites... Just wondering. Also, where is the hooded figure in the background in the Game Over sequence?

I love horsie111's videoes of SotB. It shows me what the Amiga version looked and sounded like. Such a great game. :)

  • Look dead center in between the trees as far as you can see & you will just barely make out the hooded figure. It's not really possible to see him well in this youtube video recording.

  • whoa...that's the grim reaper isn't it? man, this game was so dark and ancient!

  • So the Sega Genesis version of Shadow of the Beast simply says Game Over when you die?

  • Yep, and by the way, I now have the Amiga version of this game, too. You see, I BOUGHT the Amiga emulator for $80 (comes with WinUAE, another emulator, and an Amiga OS emulator. It's wonderful! :D

  • Yeah, this game is so difficult.

    And the music is beautiful.

I loved Shadow of the beast, all of them.

  • i saw that screen more then once lol damn that game was difficult

  • Jeez, I've just been transported back 16 odd years. Amazing!

  • You couldn't do music like this on a IBM or Apple at that time.

  • You could make music like this an an IBM/compatible (PC's), but you'd have to pay some $15,000 to build such an able system to play it.

    Amiga 1200 @ 14 MHz = Pentium @ 100 MHz

  • just like all the beast 1 soundtracks, the pan pipes sound good on all of them

  • Great music, someone really needs to come out with a tribute CD with the more notable music from these old Psygnosis games!

  • There is a shadow of the beast soundtrack which includes music from loads of othere amiga games on it too. I can't remember exactly the website i got it from but it was through a guy called Bjorn Lynne. Google him.

  • Its like the Turkish Delight adverts.. "full of eastern promise" :)

    Awesome games..

  • I saw this scene very often when I played this game. The music was magical and it brings back good memories.

  • I loved the hooded figure in the background..but u cant see him well on this.

  • I for one am proud of finishing the game...ONCE! Ridiculously difficult, but what a game...

  • Hardest Game Ever ;)

  • nope :) , shadow of the beast 2 is hardest game ever!!

  • i don't get this game over screen i never played this game can anyone tell me what the hell is going on? lol

  • Well Einstein! In common sense (I havn't played the game either) you died in the game! Doh!

  • Thanks for uploading this! Psygnosis didn't know how to make good games but they sure made 'em look good! And they also nailed the creepy, moody atmosphere with great music.

  • Never played it coz of the creepy intro! Too chicken shit to play!

BUT NOW I WANNA PLAY IT!!! DAMN!!! IF ONLY I HAD COURAGE!!!!! LOL!!!

  • LOL oh man...this screen used to always creep me out as a kid when I used to play this game...

  • Fair play for adding this. One of the most chillin game over sequences to date.

    Long live SOTB!!!
