Hi Gordon,on your personal suggestion, which is more better the 50D or the 60D? i've 550D and seldom use the video mode,. i want to buy another body,is it the fast and well-build 50D or the newer and built in flash transmitter 60D?
@muhaimi92 It's a good question and there's actually lots to weigh-up. I've covered everything I know about in the verdict page of my Canon 60D review at cameralabs . com...
Thanks for the review. I'm now able to handle a couple of functions that I didn't bother with before due to lack of understanding when reading the manual.
@cameralabs oh im sorry.. i was just asking.. the internet connection in the place where i am from is quite slow so i wasn't able to finish it.... im sorry if my question upset you..
@true10619 Well, good question. if you want less FPS, a flippy screen and a user friendly guide then you go for the 60D. the 50D is just more professional. Although the 60D has got movie functions, where the 50D doesnt. if you want to go for video recording, then you should head on for the 60D. But if you care for photography, then the 50D. Even though the 550D is a real choise, its a little bit cheaper and has got the same sensor as the 50D, 60D and the 7D.... i hope i could help :)

I have to admit, the 60D is so much different from the 50D. I think it would have been better, if they didn't change too much. But nonetheless, the 60D is still a great camera.

@Rodrigodiasu Can i give you some advise? 1. Canon EOS 500D Body (680 dollar) 2. Canon EF-S 60/2.8 USM Macro (470 dollar) 3. Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM Bulk (390) 4. Canon Speedlite 430EX II (278) ------- 1818 dollar That is what i recommend to you. That you have a really complete set, -Good camera -Good walk around lens -Very good macro lens -And a flash for lightning. Greetings, Photo Press Holland / Jeroen Hut
Hi Gordon, I read on your review on the 60D vs 50D comparison that the colours from the photographs from the 50D are muted and less bright. However, I dont think I am interested in editing every photograph that I take. Is there anyway that we can change the settings on the camera so that it looks more vibrant and with more saturated colours like the 60D or other cameras?

@93Shellster Obviously I'm not Gordon, but this is what I'd do:
I'd set the camera on Manual (M), set the shutter speed to a high speed like 1/250, set the aperture two or three stops from max, and set the ISO to compensate for exposure (assuming daylight conditions, I'd guess it to be 200 or 400).
A more automatic way is setting the camera to Shutter Priority (TV), setting the shutter speed to a high speed like 1/250, then let the camera take care of the aperture and ISO.
im still heartbroken... cant decide which camera to get... the 7D is just out of my price range. 60D hasnt really camptred my interest, 550D is a rebel body and i was hoping to leave the rebel series in my next upgrade and im affraid the 50D will become out dated.... maybe changing to Nikon is an option i should consider. D7000 seems like it has potential
@waggygee I was in the same position as you. I ended up picking up a like-new 50D with 86 actuations for $700.
My reason:
-I didn't need the video features of the 500D/550D
-I couldn't afford the 7D
-I already have Canon glass, so switching to Nikon is out of the question
-The xxD series hold their own pretty well.
In all honesty, the 40D is still a great camera and can hold its own today. The only reasons I went with the 50D instead is because of the AF microadjustment, higher ISO, and UDMA.
gordon, is it safe to say that the 50d and the 40d can both shoot 6fps? coz in everyday shooting, how would anyone know anyway? the difference were just mere tenths of a second apart. 6.3fps(50d) vs. 6.5fps(40d). compare them with a 7d though, and the results are obvious.
Woot I just bought a 50D! The 7 was just too expensive. I couldn't justify spending that much when I don't make anything from my photography. I am so excited!
Gordan your a champ, purchased a 50d a few weeks back now and your reviews on camera labs were definantly one of the deciding factors. keep up the good work! I now recommend cameralabs . com to any mate looking for a camera. Cheers!
Hi Gordon thank you very much for the review; this is very informative. I learned a lot from you. I have a question, if you have to choose one telephoto lens for this camera which one would you go for and why?
Gordon, what dslr do you recommend for a beginner ? I previously owned a canon ae 1 camera ( film). I intend to enroll in a course in digital photography.
@rajindra53 Hello, i currently have the Sony A200, its the best beginner DSLR of 2008. I have been extremely pleased with its performance so far, but ive had it for a year and a half now so im upgrading to the EOS 50D + EF 100-400mm L IS USM F/4.5 ............ The sony lens' i have are the Sony 75-300mm (which is a very good cheapish lens by sony if you want to shoot long range, DO NOT go for the Sigma version (70-300mm) as it is cheap and nasty !
@rajindra53 I also use the Sony 18-70mm which is a great beginner quality short rnage lens to use. Sony have just released the A230 in place of the A200, which is smaller and a new shape, but still 10.2MP. So I'd strongly recommend Sony.
Lets see the Sensor on the 50D is Gapless. The USM lens is one of the best. The D!G!C 4 is (was) top of the line at one time. The D90 and this one are so close it honestly comes down to ergonomics and asking yourself. Will you ever buy an "L" Series lens? I have owned both Nikion and EOS. I only wish I could buy a Nikon wrapped in an EOS body. I can't so I bought the EOS. They are solid. The way they feel, point, and shoot. Even the buttons feel right. Like a 1911A1. It feels natural.
gordon if you had the option to buy the nikon d90, canon eos 50d and the canon eos 40d wich one would you buy ? and why. i have read all your reviews so can you answer my question please ^^
gordon. ive been plannin to get a sony a550.i watched and read ur reviews on it as well as the canon 50d. which one u think is a better camera.. in terms of performance and everything (ignore the brand)..cheers.
Sad that this particular DSLR doesn't come with video mode. Considering it's DIGIC 4 processor which has HD video capabilities, I think Canon should have made use of it and put a video mode on it. I'm not trying to make this camera look bad though.
@ihateyaacov Honestly? I use Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, all of them! See the 'what camera does Gordon use' thread in the cameralabs forums.
@menoziinrevoltado It's a nice idea, but the goalposts are constantly changing - it'd be a full-time job just to keep that list updated! But I do have the best buys section at cameralabs . com with the models I currently recommend - and I'm about to update it right now!
Hi Gordon, is spending the extra couple hundred dollars worth it for the canon 50d or is the nikon d90 at the same level. What is your opinion on the better camera for shooting like wildlife and sports?
Hi, I have a question. Would you say that there is a big difference between 450d and 50d? I own a 450d right now and was thinking about upgrading. But maybe it wouldn't be necessary?
I have to agree. 50D has much better grip and higher FPS. 550D isn't bad camera, I took some shots with it but 50D really better. Especially in built-in quality.
yea dont like video on dslr's cuz if you have like a box or a cube on the top of the screen you get a fisheye efect even if ure not using a fish eye lens
Hey Mr Gordon, Im deciding between a 50D vs a 550D. Ive shot a regular SLR for 3 years, now im ready to upgrade. Planning on using the camera for the next 5 years! any suggestions?
I'm ready to upgrade from my 350D, and am considering both the 50D & the 550D.
I'm leaning toward the 50D, only because of the build quality, and that I prefer a larger camera and more robust body, but noise control at higher ISOs is also a big consideration.
@nuf90The 50D does not have video but If you are a more serious photographer the 50D is for you. I had a 450D and recently upgraded and boy am I glad I did. I can't give the details here of course but it is a step up. Far sturdier and just "feels" a lot better. Interpret that as you will. Good luck with however you decide. There is nothing wrong with the Rebel.
Any recommendations on what lens would be a good idea to pair up with this body when I buy one? I have a f/1.8 50mm lens that i love. Although, I'd like a nice wide angle. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Question: I am an owner of a Canon EOS 1000D for 2 years, and its time for an upgrade. If i would purchase this camera, do you recommend to get the Canon EOS 50D with the standard lens, or the house only, and then a seperate lens beside?
Hi Gordon first of thank you for the review. I am using 50D with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens I feel like picture I took appears larger on LCD screen then what i actually see through the view finder why is that?
You're not going mad - the screen gives you 100% coverage - ie, all of the shot - whereas the viewfinder on the 50D only shows 95% coverage. Only very expensive DSLRs offer 100% coverage through the viewfinder.
mr gordon sir, i love your vids.may i request something though, if its not to much to ask... please, more dslrtips videos... it will be very helpful.. thanks..
I would love to, but can't until people start supporting me more by shopping (for anything!) at the partner stores page at dslrtips . com or cameralabs . com. This is a full-time job for me, and I can't do any reviews, tutorials or videos which don't pay the bills.
help me!! im ging to buy my first ever dslr camera..i love shooting on outdoor.landscape and in low lights...as of now my eyes is set to nikon d90 but i also saw the canon eos 50d..so as of now im confuse..is there any camera out there more better than this one? not more than $1500, for a beginner like me.. i also love shooting video...pls somebody advice me up..
thank u for the advice.i realize that i also have to consider buying a good lenses so 1500 will not be good enough..so i decided to buy the d90 next month..perfect to my budget. around 800$ only here..so i still have some extra cash for the lenses.. ^^
Every one will tell you that what ever brand they have is the best.. However when it really comes down to it.. its what you feel better with using.. I like canon.. i find them easy to use and well balanced and gr8 colour ourput etc.. but i have plenty of mates who use nikon.. They are also amazing cameras.. So my advice is to go to the shop and play for a good hour with both machines and see what ones feels best in your hand.. Both will give you stunning images..
thank you for the advice..after watching so many video reviews regarding DSLR's Canon and Nikon are really stand outs..i think im goin to buy nikon d90..that's what i feel..hehe ^^ as of now..but i still goin to test both machines when i got to the store like what u said..thank u..
Hi,I have a 50D, and I need to take pictures with a bigger resolution for a job, so when I open the properties of a picture, there says that the resolution is 72dpi, but I have a friend with also the 50D and in his pictures when you open the properties, there says 240dpi...do you know how I can change it!?this numbers are in the original file of the picture before edition...so,how can I change the dpi of a pic, can I do it in the camera!?or that should be make it in a software like photoshop!?
you need to change your shooting mode to RAW and on the highest Quality setting.. This will give you a big enough Rez for any printing job... still have issues pls msg me
happy holidays mr. gordon. this was the very 1st vid i saw of cameralabs ever since i typed the "canon eos 50d" in the yt search box. i'm going back to this very video to place my greetings!
i wonder one stupid thing. If i am changing in the menues and i want to take a picture without going out of the menues do i have to go out of the menue and take a picture or if i am in a menue is it just to press the shutter button and the picture will be taken?
guys i need help. Im planning to buy my first DSLR camera this month. And im a beginner when it comes to photography. Do you recommend this camera? if not, what camera is the best for a starter like me?
I'm also a beginner and was planning on buying the 500d so I asked a professional photographer which camera I should get and he recommended this one because you get greater features for the money. I just got it last week and take it from me, its absolutely worth it even if you're a beginner.
go for Canon 450D which is also known as Canon Rebel XSi in US market...since u r new to photography, it wud giv u chance to buy more lenses n overall its a great camera! Should have bought Canon 450D instead of my Sony Alpha 330!
it's pretty obvious that you are biased. how can a nikon d300 be placed below a nikon d3000 that doesnt have an AF motor? for goodness sake, sony a330 and a230 have built in AF motor and IS. so it's obvious that the nikon d3000 is the last one. it doesnt help. dont mislead beginners or newbies and be biased against sony. . the nikon D300 should be at the top of the list. You'd look like an ignorant person if you say something like "the D40 is better than the sony a700 because it is a nikon".
dude are u serious or makin a joke?? your from best to last...?? the D300 below D3000??im a canon user thru & thru but even i know the specs from both canon & nikon,.. almost drop from my chair from reading your comments,..get your facts straight buoyy!
Do any of you have back focusing problems with yours? I have the 50 for about 7months and suddenly I have focusing problems. Couldn't understand WHY it happened on all my lenses, doesn't matter what f'stop I used. Went on google to find out and I found how to fix it myself in the custom functions. If i get more problems, seems it has to go back to Canon for mechanical repair.
Don't use cheap glass to expect great outcomes with this camera!!

@Madierfert You should go for the 50d as I did.
Why?
The 50d has got a magnesim alloy body istead of plastic, 6fps instead of 5.3 and so on.
The 50d is just more advanced than the 60d and also a bit cheaper.

I'd set the camera on Manual (M), set the shutter speed to a high speed like 1/250, set the aperture two or three stops from max, and set the ISO to compensate for exposure (assuming daylight conditions, I'd guess it to be 200 or 400).
A more automatic way is setting the camera to Shutter Priority (TV), setting the shutter speed to a high speed like 1/250, then let the camera take care of the aperture and ISO.
r31ncarnat3d 1 year ago
@93Shellster Try this: set the camera on aperture priority and set the aperture on the lowest number. And which lens do you use?

im still heartbroken... cant decide which camera to get... the 7D is just out of my price range. 60D hasnt really camptred my interest, 550D is a rebel body and i was hoping to leave the rebel series in my next upgrade and im affraid the 50D will become out dated.... maybe changing to Nikon is an option i should consider. D7000 seems like it has potential
waggygee 1 year ago
@waggygee I was in the same position as you. I ended up picking up a like-new 50D with 86 actuations for $700.
My reason:
-I didn't need the video features of the 500D/550D
-I couldn't afford the 7D
-I already have Canon glass, so switching to Nikon is out of the question
-The xxD series hold their own pretty well.
In all honesty, the 40D is still a great camera and can hold its own today. The only reasons I went with the 50D instead is because of the AF microadjustment, higher ISO, and UDMA.
r31ncarnat3d 1 year ago
@r31ncarnat3d cool, I managed to get a 7D pretty cheap, but I had to sell all my glass except my Sigma 17-70mm

gordon, is it safe to say that the 50d and the 40d can both shoot 6fps? coz in everyday shooting, how would anyone know anyway? the difference were just mere tenths of a second apart. 6.3fps(50d) vs. 6.5fps(40d). compare them with a 7d though, and the results are obvious.

Hi Gordon thank you very much for the review; this is very informative. I learned a lot from you. I have a question, if you have to choose one telephoto lens for this camera which one would you go for and why?
Thunderball123 1 year ago
Gordon, what dslr do you recommend for a beginner ? I previously owned a canon ae 1 camera ( film). I intend to enroll in a course in digital photography.
rajindra53 1 year ago
@rajindra53 Hello, i currently have the Sony A200, its the best beginner DSLR of 2008. I have been extremely pleased with its performance so far, but ive had it for a year and a half now so im upgrading to the EOS 50D + EF 100-400mm L IS USM F/4.5 ............ The sony lens' i have are the Sony 75-300mm (which is a very good cheapish lens by sony if you want to shoot long range, DO NOT go for the Sigma version (70-300mm) as it is cheap and nasty !
JJHQ95 1 year ago
@rajindra53 I also use the Sony 18-70mm which is a great beginner quality short rnage lens to use. Sony have just released the A230 in place of the A200, which is smaller and a new shape, but still 10.2MP. So I'd strongly recommend Sony.
JJHQ95 1 year ago
Gordon do you think the sony lineups are inferior to nikons and canons?
princerexor 1 year ago
Lets see the Sensor on the 50D is Gapless. The USM lens is one of the best. The D!G!C 4 is (was) top of the line at one time. The D90 and this one are so close it honestly comes down to ergonomics and asking yourself. Will you ever buy an "L" Series lens? I have owned both Nikion and EOS. I only wish I could buy a Nikon wrapped in an EOS body. I can't so I bought the EOS. They are solid. The way they feel, point, and shoot. Even the buttons feel right. Like a 1911A1. It feels natural.

Sad that this particular DSLR doesn't come with video mode. Considering it's DIGIC 4 processor which has HD video capabilities, I think Canon should have made use of it and put a video mode on it. I'm not trying to make this camera look bad though.

How do you get to the timer?
Flips4Kenz 1 year ago
Gordon, you should rank the cameras on your website.
You are so unbiased that, even in the comparisons, I can't determine the winner.
For instance, your 50D versus 40D verdict and many others.
Something like Entry Rank, Semi-Pro Rank and Pro Rank would help a lot.
Or you can make some kind of add-on there that you click on your own preferences and the list of cameras narrows down.
For example, ask the guy if he wants speed or weight or whatever...
As he clicks, he approaches his ideal camera.

@menoziinrevoltado It's a nice idea, but the goalposts are constantly changing - it'd be a full-time job just to keep that list updated! But I do have the best buys section at cameralabs . com with the models I currently recommend - and I'm about to update it right now!

If money is not a problem, and you don't need video, you should definitely go for the 50D.
550d is entry-level and 50D is semi-pro (bigger, magnesium body, etc.)
mathieuemi666 1 year ago
I have to agree. 50D has much better grip and higher FPS. 550D isn't bad camera, I took some shots with it but 50D really better. Especially in built-in quality.
GarfieldRHoone 1 year ago
yea dont like video on dslr's cuz if you have like a box or a cube on the top of the screen you get a fisheye efect even if ure not using a fish eye lens
MrPlaystationboy 1 year ago
@MrPlaystationboy The main problem with video on DSLR (at least on Canon EOS) is that autofocus doesn't work when recording a video.

Hey Mr Gordon, Im deciding between a 50D vs a 550D. Ive shot a regular SLR for 3 years, now im ready to upgrade. Planning on using the camera for the next 5 years! any suggestions?
nuf90 2 years ago
@nuf90
@nuf90
i'm in the same situation.
I'm ready to upgrade from my 350D, and am considering both the 50D & the 550D.
I'm leaning toward the 50D, only because of the build quality, and that I prefer a larger camera and more robust body, but noise control at higher ISOs is also a big consideration.
Which one handles noise better?

JimmyFartpants 1 year ago
@nuf90, if you want to use it for 5 years, the 50D would be better. The 550D is plastic... And 50D is a higher level DSLR.
ITTS94 1 year ago
the shutter actuator life is a major concern for me. i don't even think of replacing my 50d. not that i just newly had it, but im contented with it.
N6600 1 year ago
@nuf90The 50D does not have video but If you are a more serious photographer the 50D is for you. I had a 450D and recently upgraded and boy am I glad I did. I can't give the details here of course but it is a step up. Far sturdier and just "feels" a lot better. Interpret that as you will. Good luck with however you decide. There is nothing wrong with the Rebel.

cameralabs 2 years ago
Super video mate!
Question: I am an owner of a Canon EOS 1000D for 2 years, and its time for an upgrade. If i would purchase this camera, do you recommend to get the Canon EOS 50D with the standard lens, or the house only, and then a seperate lens beside?
sfmakten 2 years ago
Hi Gordon first of thank you for the review. I am using 50D with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens I feel like picture I took appears larger on LCD screen then what i actually see through the view finder why is that?
ihavedick4u 2 years ago
You're not going mad - the screen gives you 100% coverage - ie, all of the shot - whereas the viewfinder on the 50D only shows 95% coverage. Only very expensive DSLRs offer 100% coverage through the viewfinder.

Both will give you stunning images..

it's pretty obvious that you are biased. how can a nikon d300 be placed below a nikon d3000 that doesnt have an AF motor? for goodness sake, sony a330 and a230 have built in AF motor and IS. so it's obvious that the nikon d3000 is the last one. it doesnt help. dont mislead beginners or newbies and be biased against sony. . the nikon D300 should be at the top of the list. You'd look like an ignorant person if you say something like "the D40 is better than the sony a700 because it is a nikon".

Otherwise , NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH MINE.
