Great video, nice musical selection! My dad drove me past the Surf Ballroom about 25 years ago, right after we had seen "La Bamba." I'd like to go up to Clear Lake again and out to the crash site. I live in Omaha so it's only about 4 hours....it'd be a good day trip if we left early in the morning. Thanks for posting!
I just watched "La Bamba" in class today. Imagine what would've happened if Ricky didn't win the toss. What kind of music would be out right now? Would the music, today, be the beginning of rap? There would be real music still around on the radio....
Was there 3 days after the 50th anniversary, I remember well the cold, the snow, the blackened crater nearby for the bonfire, placing my KZOK keychain in the blue T-Bird. I'm glad I got to drive by and visit awhile, Clear Lake is a very nice town, the people are friendly.
Walking back to my car from the field, a man stopped me & asked my opinion: he claimed he had the propeller from the doomed Bonanza & that he was going to put it up at the site as an exhibit, would that seem tasteful? I answered "How, since the crash report states that both prop blades were broken off at the hub?", to which he became upset, insisting he had the real artifact. I wished him well & left, I didn't want a fight, especially being 2,000 miles from home. Weird moment...
Paul McCartney was quoted, "If there hadn't a Buddy Holly, there wouldn't have been The Beatles". Kinda sums it all up really. The site is both peaceful and yet haunting is some ways. The course of popular music was forever altered in that field nearly 51 year ago. I was 4 and half and I remember my dad being kinda sad about. My 1st memories were of riding with my Dad listening to "Cousin Bruce on WABC and in Philly we had the WIBG Good Guys and it always seemed like Buddy Holly was always cn..
@X0n3 It is USA. (Midwest and about thirty miles from where I live). I visited the plane crash site in June and just as my son and I were looking at the crash site marker an airplane flew overhead. Gave me goosebumps, as it is doing now. The Iowa cornfield where Holly, Valens, Richardson and Pilot Peterson died is serene and yet haunting at the same time. Being there puts things in perspective for me, and would for you too.

hey, i live there! Buddy Holly and the others may be dead, but here in clear lake i dont think a day goes by we dont hear about them, i guess they are our claim to fame. RIP
Clear Lake on county rd S-28 (Grouse ave) to 310 st. (Grouse makes a sweeping turn to the left, 310 will be the road that heads off to the right) right on 310 then your first left will be Gull ave. North on Gull to the 315 "T". STOP! look to your left, there will be a little path that heads West along a fence line. Follow the path
Or you can go N on I-35 to exit 197 head West
to Hickory, turn right go to 315 st. turn left go to "T" and stop.
this is so sad, yet cool. we all wonder what might have been. the beatles would've been as great, but would they have been as big? or could buddy run out of songs or just tire of the grind? i doubt he'd have run out of brilliance, and i don't think there would've been some lame comeback. something elegant and perfect like orbison with the wilburys. god i miss buddy holly.
My grandma lives about a block away from the Surf, I see it a lot, i looooev clear lake and used to be obsessed with buddy holly... my aunt was also at the last concert :( RIP

You cant miss the site now. Someone has added a 5 foot set of Buddies eye glases mounted on two posts! Easy to find. Then only 600 steps to the site.
thanks for the video... RIP

At the "T" with Gull, look straight ahead, you should see the path to the crash site..

Do people steal things from the memorial? Because I saw another picture and some of the stuff wasn't there.
qwark72 4 years ago 2
Every once in a while the owner of the field will remove some of the stuff that is falling apart. Others will take something in and make a
"trade".

that was a hit for buddy man was that after his death or before ?
