brings back my childhood memories of Dr. S.L Roberson who just passed away he loved to see the choir march in to this thank you so much for posting I miss my Pastor thank you for posting....
@ProgressScoop this wasn't a reunion concert, this was the last musical at the old church, St. James moved into a new building the following sunday. this was in the fall of 1991.
This service brings back so many memories. Fellowship, First Church of Deliverance, Christian Tabernacle, etc., Where are churchs and choirs that have services like this today?
Who wrote this song Marcell? I used to hear it on the radio in Chicago being sung by the First Church of Deliverance Choir. We used to break our necks almost trying to get to the 11:00 p.m. broadcast of First Church. I miss these services and choirs so much. I live in Westerville Ohio now; we don't a church or choir like St. James/First Church, Fellowship, etc., I am so sick of these new age so called church services and new age choirs with choir members dressed as if they just came from a bar.
You are so right Goodstiff. First Church of Deliverance Choir (Chicago) use to sing this song. Chicago's Christ Tabernacle MBC Combined Choirs would have this song as their march in song every 4th Sunday evening. We would have a little break after service or most of the times no break and go right into our broadcast with Holy Thine (Lord, I want to be Holy). The Good old days with Rev. M. Brunson as our pastor on Madison St.
@goodstiff The late great Clara Ward is given credit for initially having written this song, w/ Mahalia Jackson performing it. Others later added more & different verses to it. I know you asked this question over a year ago, but I don't see where anyone answered your question of, 'who wrote' How I Got Over. :-)
(verse 1) the tallest tree, in paradise, the christian call, the tree of life, my soul looks back and wonder, how i got over. (verse 2) i've been buked, and i've been scorned, and i've been talked about, as sure as you're born, my soul looks back and wonder, how i got over.

This is the year Reverend Cleveland passed away. Reverend Nicks was already gone.

Is Rev. Nicks the choir director or the pastor. I know Rev Nicks is decsed. Is the choir director still living & if he is is he still there?

Rev. Nicks was the pastor! he was minister of music before he became pastor.
Jimmy "JD" Dowell was the minister of music/director after Rev. Nicks became pastor, he passed away in December of 2004.
God Bless.
