its probably because they were the first to make it, meaning, they had PLENTY of time to develop it when nobody else knew what they were doing. then other companies felt they should make the same thing and it just turned out crappy because it was rushed

I hear there's a 4g hi-def one on the horizon but I'd look at a rival from Toshiba, Samsung or Nokia if it was truly better. 2 of my friends just had that new Nokia 5800 and they both had iphones and prefered the iphone to the nokia (apart from bluetoothing music to wireless speakers). My contracts up, what phone to get?!

Thats why WM seems slow and sluggish because it has many things running.
The redraw when the iphone moves to a new app, is just that - a redraw -fake. Its a delay to make it seem fast.
This thing has a 1ghz processor, tons of ram and isnt a 1 trick only pony like the iphone!
