Screw the people that called the people. There have been dozens of reports about these.. have any been a bomb? NO. Have people been to scared since 2001 about "potential bombs"? YES. It's a box! A peanut butter jar! It's NOT A FUCKING BOMB!
Placement and container marking are very important. As a rule, the closer to population you are, the smaller the container. Cans are normally placed where people are less likely to frequent or on private property. They are also normally repainted.
@bluesnote1 o.O The government isn't trying to stop geocaching, friend. In fact the Department of Natural Resources (government!) encourages the game by allowing cachers to make hides on DNR property, provided they be made aware of the location of the hide so something like this doesn't happen.
As a cacher, if I saw some kids hiding an ammo box near the woods I might not be as suspicious but I can understand the crew's reaction. It's inconvenient for the geocachers, but safety trumps out game.
I fully support the police in this case. You didn't paint it, as you always should with ammo boxes to get rid of any words or symbols that screams bombs... Blasting Caps? Damn...
continued.........this ever occurs again. We even go geocaching with the chief of police and three other officers. So in the end we made some new friends and alot of good memories with this police officers.
Sometimes although you have permission cops do show up. We placed a geocache in a park with permission. We were out doing some routine maitenance on it and a cop showed up. It lead to a complete search of ourselves and our car. We ended up calling the parks dept. and they confirmed what it was. After talking to the parks dept. the officers then asked us what geocaching was all about and we ended up doing a presentation at the police dept on geocaching so they know what it is if an incident like
this reminds me of the time i hid my geocache in the airport terminal. After weeks of jail and explaining my self to the officials, they let me go. Then i moved the cache to the base of the empire state building.

that's why you should also paint your ammo boxes.

It's something they call "the geocaching game". Hahahaha
Seriously though, this is a prime example as to why permission should be given and the container labeled clearly as a geocache.

@curtisi Exactly! It wouldn`t be hard for the authorities to track down an owner of a cache it it`s done by Geocaching standards.

Way to go....giving geocaching a bad name!! (ha-ha). Lesson learned though, I will definatly be very careful where I place my cache from now on.
