@Illztothathrillz THANX for a solid, intelligent comparison. I've check'd uTube & vime0 & blogs to find affordable, good quality art/sketch tablets & this looks sweet.
I've used many WACOM products over the yrs (did CG + 3d work bak in the day) & they're good; yet WACOM seems to have an "all or none" pricing mode. Studios can afford CINTIQs but 4 freelance-home & the real world (which is not delicate), it seems sensible 4 the average artist (especially kids) to buy a tablet like this ASUS.
there is a hidden shortcut in photoshop (alt+[ or ]) that cycle through layers. When I'm doing digital painting, I use Alt a lot, to color pick a color from my painting. But the keys [ and ] are set to the slider... so it would chance the brush size... but sometimes I end up pressing alt and [ together and without noticing it I end up painting in the wrong layer....
I have one question: Can you touch Asus screen while drawing, or not? like on Cintiq, it not recognize hand pressure, just pen, can Asus do that??? thanks
Thanks much for posting this. I didn't know Asus made a tablet until this and also, thanks for your demonstration which helps a lot in discerning between the two. I do storyboard work and am trying to decide on buying a Cintiq, but it's quite expensive. Figured now maybe Asus can be an option.
You can turn of some stuff in Photoshop to increase responsitivty, reduce lag etc. I have PS CS2 and by changing brush tip from precise to standard (!?) did a lot for performance! (How is this possible!?) Photoshop in some ways is unbelievable bad programmed!

hi.. i love your video, and i see that "slate" gets slower with more layers.do u have more programs installed on there such as illustrator Dreamweaver and flash, because i was wondering how it runs. i em think waiting a little bit longer until maybe 6 gig comes out or until other companies make faster pad that can support maybe the whole cs5 suite .
Thank you very much for the review, very helpful. I have a question if you wouldn't mind asking. I do wedding photography and I want to buy the Asus slate for some on the go editing. For example, some reception pictures needs basic color correction, brightness, contrast, etc. I want to use the slate mostly for this type of work while riding the train or something. Will I be able to calibrate the asus slate so it would look the same on the screen and on print? Thank you very much!
@Capeau -- exactly!!! Who says "i7" and "not powerful" in the same sentence. Does he have a loaded G5 mac somewhere we don't know about?! hahaha. My 1Ghz Atom LS800 is "not powerful"
how did you get the pen pressure to work in photoshop in the ASUS EP121??
photoshop wont let me activate the pen pressure on my tablet pc ASUS EP121, some ppl are saying to install some kind of driver, but the one on wacom's site wont work with photoshop pen pressure. plz help , thank you so much
My ep121 arrived today, I installed the wacom drivers, pressure works. However, Ive noticed a bit of an offset from the tip of the pen to the cursor, problem seems to get worst as I tilt the pen, shifting as much as .5cm. Have you noticed ?
I think it might be a problem with the lower quality pen, my intuos 3 pen is not compatible but maybe an intuos 4 or cintiq 12wx pen will work and, hopefully, solve the tilt/ precission issue. Do you have some of these pens to test?
Hi, thank you very much for the comparison. I've got a question for you, how does multitouch work within photoshop? Can you pan around using two fingers while using the wacom? Or zoom in and out. I'm looking for that kind of interactivity in Photoshop or lightroom. Thanks for answering!
@ryo4ever PS works fine with multi-touch but generally it is more accurate and make more sense to just use the side button on the pen for panning around.
Thank you for reviewing and comparing both of these products. As an artist myself i needed to know the slight nuances in the functions that i specifically would be using the most. Great videos and I look forward to more. ^_^
Man thanks a lot for these videos comparing EP121 vs Cintiq... I have an Intuos 4 wireless that I was planning hooking it up on a laptop. Would the EP121 be better ? How is the pen pressure sensitivity on Photoshop compared to your tablet ?
Do you have a 32GB or 64GB slate? Amazon shows that they have 2GB and 4GB RAM correspondingly. Also, from my experience, turning off windows tablet service can significantly improve the pen response, but you wont be able to use handwriting recognition and pen-tricks (like 2 sec press for rightclick).
And one more question: you mentioned in your blog that one can purchase a stilo with buttons on amazon. Can you tell me, which one? :)
hi! thanks for the review ! i have a big question, about the 2 button's on the pen! the final version haven't , coz i see the fist review and the pen is like wacom bambo!
Why is Sketchbook Pro seems so laggy? I have a 5 year old tablet slate 1.5 gb of ram 1.6 ghz Centrino with window 7 and it doesn't lag behind like that in sketchbook. I mean when you use Pencil its not real time i can see the stroke trailing behind. There no way its your hardware can't handle sketchbook properly. Maybe a proper wacom driver u need.
Just got one of these beauties but I have one problem: I can't get pressure sensitivity to work in Photoshop CS5. Works fine in Sketchbook and Art Rage. Did you have to download any special drivers?
thanks so much for doing this review, exactly what I have been dying to see.I have one on the way as i type this,so i'm pretty excited.
By the way man, really nice work,i thought i read you do storyboard work?thats what i do and am really looking forward to having this with me on the go as opposed to my really heavy gateway tablet pc,probably weighs about 6 times as much.
Thanks so much for doing these videos. Very helpful! I'm wondering how much of an issue you consider it not having hotkeys while using the slate. I'm considering getting one for photoshop, sketchbook pro, and zbrush use, but I could see not having access to keyboard shortcuts being a major drawback. Manageable in PS or SP but probably a dealbreaker for ZB. Any thoughts?
@ChipMidnight check out my review (link in details) for more info on that. overall, its a tough call. not having a keyboard is only half of it - not being able to stand the screen upright easily is another. it really is a question of what you'd bedoing more- drawing in screen on using hotkeys. ill put up a vid about this soon
@tuftmeili Yes, BUT there is a trick to it. The touch gets automatically disabled when the pen is detected. The pen gets detected 1-2 inches away from the screen automatically. So as long as you keep the pen within range, you can touch the screen all you want. It took me 30 min to get used to first lifting off my hand and than lifting off the pen when I want to click on a different part of the screen.
@tuftmeili yes. the touch is disabled when pen is in range. the opposite is also true, so lifting the pen 3 inches away from the screen while resting your on the screen will force your hand to be recognised
@Illztothathrillz Cool I was going to ask that question. With that being said did you happen to notice a setting on the Slate in which you could just disable touch altogether? I have used systems like the XT and just disable finger touch so I can lean my hand and lift/slide without any odd cursor drift. Thanks
Great video! Thanks for the detailed comparisons in photoshop, the lag was expected but still a little disappointing, but for a slate what can you do. Looking forward for the delivery of my EP in the next few weeks!!
Just wondering though, I know the gorilla glass is tough but how slippery (or paper like) is the surface compared to the cintiq? I returned my 12wx after about a month, I just couldn't get used to the overly smooth screen. I guess I was just spoiled by my old t5010 tablet :P
@CueBALL0197 If you don't like drawing on smooth screen you might have to buy a screen protector for your EP. :( The screen is extremely smooth, it is like drawing on plastic glass. Personally, I like it better than drawing on Lenovo X201s screen because the surface is perfectly flat. My guess is, with a screen protector you will get a perfect Cintiq like feel at the cost of some outdoor visibility.
@Illztothathrillz Thanks, it sounds like photodon makes a great product but you have to sacrifice some touch sensitivity. Unless you (or anyone else) know of any better screen protectors out there?

One that has more than 12.1" and just for drawing. With the ability of being able to draw on screen. $500-2000 range

Intuos4 vs EP121 ?

MegaMo99 11 months ago
@MegaMo99 If you have a desktop computer, draw on it primarily, Intuos4. EP121 if you want to be on the go, bring your sketches with you. =P
It really depends on what you want to use it for, honestly, at $1000, If you asked, Cintiq 12ux vs EP121, I'd go with EP121 due to portability.
