  • Queen Victoria and your Queen were very close-then the US decided to start an empire for themselves.

  • @toonmag50 Yes you are correct. I think if our queen, Queen Emma had won against Kalakaua during the royal election Hawai'i would have had a much stronger tie to the United Kingdom, protecting Hawai'i from American influence. It was Kalakaua who favored America, which ultimately ignited the ticking bomb that led to Hawai'i coming under possession of the United States.

  • @YouLikeBeef -It is a bit odd that the "big bad European Empires" have given "their" possesions back, but the "beacon of democracy and freedom" converted their possesions into a "state" -strange but true

  • E ola mau loa ka lāhui Hawai'i!

  • i am chamoru do you let me in your culture?

  • @roccomaniac1

Of course. If you support self-determination and a new Hawaiian nation then we need people like you. If however you are against Hawaiian culture, then that's a different story.

    Fanohge Chamoru put i tano'-ta.

  • Beautiful Song, in a beautiful place. I am truly honoured to live in the land we call Hawaii! I'm a non-Hawaiian, but honour the traditions and the people of Hawaii Nei! IMUA HAWAII!!!

  • @DELTA1978THETA

    Mahalo for your comment.

  • I'm a proud Hawaiian and I believe that Hawaii belongs to the Hawaiians. The people who betrayed Queen Liliuokalani are just complete idiots. I think of Queen Liliuokalani as a proud Queen of the Hawaiian Islands and gave her people the best she can. She gave the Hawaiian children a place where they can call home, treated everyone like her own child, and let the Hawaiians and Asian power to run the Hawaiian kingdom.

  • WHy should Hawaii even belong to the US? We deserve it back I mean I hate all these stereotypes that I keep getting asked like "Were you home schooled?" Or "Did you where hula skirts to school everyday?" Like really? I mean seriously? It is a normal place where it is mainly just Hawaiians and Asians..

  • @bluehen

bro go to hell we are natives and "americans" just came in and took over just like they always do they did it to indians blacks ect.. its bull if it wasnt for the hawaiians letting cook live as long as he did then for all we know hawaii could still truly be free

  • Thank to YOU

  • @BlueHen123 It's "sheer" stupidity not "shear". Then again I'm not much of a spelling Nazi but what ever adds more ammo on my side to make you look stupid, I will not repudiate.

We were here longer than you. We were here first, established our country first, and so we are native, always. If your brainiac theory is that no one is indigenous to the islands, then the people who currently populate their area of the globe are not indigenous either.

keep your comments civil. otherwise get out.

  • i'll put my hand over my heart every time i sing Hawai'i Pono'ī but will not when the american national anthem is being played.

  • @crazysuurrf ;-) Right on! E ola ka lahui Hawai'i!

  • @YouLikeBeef Maikaʻi nō!! E ola mau loa ka lāhui Hawaiʻi.

  • @crazysuurrf. Same here! Except I sulute!

  • I fan of hawaian of kigdom of Hawaii.

Ealy o later the history is back and your Kings and Queens will be. I red about the way that the US arrived, It was any similar to Texas. Hawaii belongs to hawaiians.

  • @inforana Thank you for your comment.

  • I want our land back ! the haoles got soo much land already, they dont need to take away what rightfully belongs to us. yeah hawaii is a beautiful place, so keep it that way! stop with "wanting to add a monnorail"! keep the country country!

  • "I want my Hawaii back" what does this mean? There is no one indigenous to the islands...everyone came from some where at some point. Be lucky to be art of the US, anywhere else would mean less freedom.

  • @BlueHen123

Hawaiians (of polynesian stock) are the indigenous people of Hawai'i. Then why are we called "Native Hawaiians"? Shouldn't you Americans call us "Lost Tahitians" or "wayward Marquesans" or "misdirected Rarotongans"?

We are not lucky to be part of the U.S. If everyone so loved "American freedom" then why aren't nations clamoring to become a part of the u.s. by becoming states?

You will never understand and I don't expect you to.

  • @BlueHen123 A lot of other countries have way more freedom. That's just some propaganda bullshit.

  • Ugh! whenever i hear this song it makes me sooo mad when they dont play all 3 verses but also sad that the Hawaiian Kingdon lost a major battle. But Hawaiians can still get Hawaii back! We have Olelo and we can finally be heard now!!! Hawaii belongs to hawaiians. and we wont use Kaho'olawe as a bomb testing site

  • @carmie329 I know what you mean. Most people in Hawai'i don't know the other lyrics. I committed to memory all 3 verses as it is the anthem of my homeland.

Hawaiians can get Hawai'i back but I recognize it is a high mountain to climb. The odds are against us as most people in Hawai'i are Americanized and would be hard to convince to embrace Hawaiian nationalism, identity, and lokahi. Hawaiianness is not only an ethnic thing. It is an identity for all.

Our hope lies in the 'opio.

  • Future generation need to take control. Everyone thinks the Government is doing the right things. they took Hawai'i w/out asking...

  • I want my islands back!!! they belong to the Hawaiians!!! not the British or the U.S

  • @thetkid347

I know me too. I would love to see an independent Hawai'i one day. Although, I do not see it happening in my lifetime, I have hope that maybe the future generation will wake up and see a renewed awareness of our Hawaiian nation.

  • @YouLikeBeef

Future generation need to take control. Everyone thinks the Government is doing the right things. they took Hawai'i w/out asking...

  • Good job brah most guys I know don't even know get one 2nd and 3rd verse

  • @WataAtaCrackah

    Mahalo a nui loa.

  • I love this song so much! It makes me feel very prideful of where I was born. I remember stories about how the people sang Hawai`i Pono`i as the countries flag was replaced by the American flag. Sad, but a strong song!!

  • @jrnlstsrock

I know. It's very sad. I hate looking at that photo of Sanford Dole at the flag lowering ceremony. It is disgusting to look at. I heard a story where once the Hawaiian flag was lowered, they cut the flag up and distributed it to the usurpers and supporters of annexation as tokens and triumph over the Hawaiian people and nation.

  • I heard that story too and it really pissed me off too. I've been to Hawaii 4 times and loved every minute of it. I really get angry when I think of what America did to Hawaii. I guess the army base called Fort Shafter really deserves its name because that's exactly what the U.S. A. did to Hawaii.

  • shouldn't this be called a state anthem?

  • @Y0uEnj0yMyself

I've already indicated it's our State anthem in the description section above. hello??

  • why is there a union jack in the flag?

  • Because of Hawai'i's relationship with the British. The British was one of the first nations to have contact with Hawai'i. Captain Vancouver is said to have given our nation its first flag (British red ensign). The Hawaiian monarchy favored the British and maintained relations with that nation.

  • @christurkthebrave. Very good question to ask. I always say Hawaii's history starts with the flag.

  • Because the UK used to administrate the US (including Hawai)

  • That is incorrect. Hawai'i was a nation RECOGNIZED by the United Kingdom as independent in 1843. Hawai'i became a possession of the U.S. in 1898. UK administration of the U.S. ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Hawai'i was NEVER a possession of the U.S. in that year. The US was barely a country and was never a global power in that year.

As someone from the UK, I find it funny you don't even know anything about your own history.

  • @YouLikeBeef The British Jack is in our flag because the British helped Hawaii and to show gratitude for there help we put it in our flag and the 8 strips stand for the main islands of Hawaii. It is sad when people neglect to know there own history. If more people knew the history maybe we would get parts of our islands back.

  • @wiliesan

Thank you. It's too bad the British didn't come to help.

  • @YouLikeBeef HOW BOUT THIS HAWAII IS ITS OWN UNITED KINGDOM

    OWNED BY NO ONE ELSE

  • @christurkthebrave if you scroll down or go to page two in the comments i answer that question. just look for my screen name

  • God bless Hawai'i

  • Did you know that Hawaii Pono 'I melody is the same as "God Save the Queen"?

  • yes :D

Hawaii's is a bit more relaxing and peaceful though, so I like it more than God Save the Queen.

But then again, I'm biased because I'm from Hawaii.

  • It's okay! It's a good bias! ;-)

  • Yup. The melody is a few notes different from God Save The Queen, but the meter is the same. One of the first mele aupuni of our nation, the song "E Ola Ke Ali'i Ke Akua", is set to God Save The Queen/King. Prince Lunalilo (King) set Hawaiian lyrics to the song.

Mahalo! You're very knowledgeable. Continue to spread the history and pride of the Hawaiian nation.

  • @YouLikeBeef. Thanks!

  • Hawaii isn't a land of great minds and if the U.S. didn't get involved all those 300 pounders would be running around in tea leaves.

  • @pavolca: Biased and asinine comments like yours is why many nations hate the U.S. It sticks its stupid, racist, arrogant nose into the affairs of others.

running around in tea leaves? like green tea? oolong? black? darjeeling? hoojicha? herbal? what are you talking about? i'm sure the U.S. didn't invent that.

  • TWO CHOICES. You obviously don't know. Can you count? TWO CHOICES. eliminated choices: Independence, commonwealth. I'm glad I struck an ire in your chord. The U.S. systematically removed the choice for independence.

Any more racial epithets will give you NO CHOICE but banning. I welcome civil discussion but no tolerance for racial epithets and vulgarity.

Face it. The U.S. is on a decline. It should step down and make way for China.

oh by the way: TWO CHOICES.

  • go you! ive been to hawai and find the people enjoy ther history and have a real true pride in ther nation! unlike USA who only have ignorant selfish patriotism, and do it at everyone elses expence

  • @durham, you spelled Hawi'i wrong. you spelled it Hawai, thats Hawai'i for your info,

please spell it correctly next time,

    thanks,

    (btw go King Kamahamaha!)

  • meanwhile America emprisoned our Queen and raped Hawaii whether they want to admit it or not.

  • @hinanochick The President Grover Cleveland tried to save her but there were many factors at the time. The so called Republic of Hawaii managed to convince the Chinese and other Asians who were the Kingdom's worker bees to support them. Landing Marines in Hawaii would have been asking U.S. troops to fight those Americans and other Europeans in the new Govt but also the poor Asians. All to restore an monarchy.

  • Hawai'i is a nation under illegal occupation by the U.S. not a state. show me the treaty of annexation!

  • it was a vote in the 60's dumb ass. All 50 states have voted to become the United States of America. And all states have their rights. And don't have to do what Washington DC says if they choose so...

  • The actual vote was in 1958, not the 60s.

Hawai'i was given only TWO choices in the plebiscite: forced integration (statehood) or remain a territory. There was no choice for independence nor choice for commonwealth (like Northern Marianas or Puerto Rico). The Americans shoved statehood into our throats. Navy personnel could vote in our plebiscite even though most were never born and raised in Hawai'i. There was hardly any discussion for independence and more importantly not an option.

  • Well apparently the people voted for statehood. If they wanted independence then they would of not voted for statehood in the first place.

The people have spoken you didn't get your way so cry about it.

And besides the japs in ww2 would have slaughtered all Hawaiians and called those islands there own.

  • Again there was NO CHOICE for independence. When you only give 2 options that is not true self-determination. Puerto Rico and the other U.S. territories have a chance for independence. Hawai'i was denied this right. The lesser of two evils was statehood.

I don't recall the Chamorros of Guam and Saipan all slaughtered by Japan. To purport that being under U.S. control is better shows bias on your part. If everyone wanted to be American, then we'd have many nations applying for statehood.

  • apparently your not understanding me.

If they wanted independence then I'm sure they would have wanted to remain a territory NOT statehood....

And yes Japan slaughtered millions in China and the Philippines too. All of this is well documented.

  • No, you are not understanding. I said TWO CHOICES were given: statehood and territory. How can you have independence when it's not an option? Hello? The lesser of two evils was chosen, especially with the help of propaganda by the U.S to influence the vote. Inability to understand and twist facts is your problem.

No you said ALL slaughtered. They are still alive and well. "slaughtered all Hawaiians" is theoretical. You don't know what would have happened.

  • Um... the words are a bit off with the music. But good job. But WTF Goosy321? Nobody comes to youtube for a history lesson.

  • Free the Kingdom of Hawaii! Greetings and support from the Texas Nationalist Movement!

  • Kamehameha!!!

  • Long live the Kingdom

  • is a state

    not a natian

  • Get real. Hawai'i Pono'i IS our true national anthem. It became our anthem of our kingdom, territory, and now the state.

And yes, our people are still a NATION. It lives in our hearts, minds, and spirit. America may take away our physical nation, but our Hawaiian NATION lives on in her people .

  • Yeah thanks for posting : D

  • ho brah i live there and it is the life

  • I so love this piano arrangement!!!

  • Once known as the Sandwich Islands. Hawai'i is an awesome place and so are it's native people. I visit there alot and it's paradise!!

  • fucking crackaz, give hawaii back to their natives!!!!!!

  • Hawaii joined the USA on their own accord.

Blame the European/American businessman who led the coup.

  • Righteous my braddah...& kalamai, I no like beef...jus poi, shootz!

  • lol...no can go wrong wid poi!

  • actually we have the brittish flag here because captin cook was the first to record the islands and report it the flag is brittish because he came from england or someplace like that there is no lines standing for islands

  • i think this is the first video ive been on with a british flag that hasnt had about 3 thousand abusive messages.

  • thanks for posting!

  • lmao me ka ihe means with the spear

  • What I remember is different story:

Back to The Big Ol'K's Day , maybe the KIII,

the island merchant ship was disturbed by pirates. The KIII had an idea: the pirates were afraid two countries: the States and the Brit. Thus, he used the stripes from the States and the flag from the Brits. From far, it looks like American flag, and when near, it shows one of the states of UK.

    And it worked!

  • On the Hawaiian Flag are eight stripes, each is for a Hawaiian Island: Ni'ihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Hawaii. The part on the upper left corner IS the english Flag. One of the Hawaiian Kings was very fond of England, Kamehameha I guess, but am not sure. Heidi, Switzerland

  • 'Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono!

  • Either way Hawaii rules!

  • I love this piano arrangement! Mahalo Daniel Ho...

  • Great flag.

  • I dont do much history so no nasty comments why is britains flag there too?

  • The Union Flag appears because of Hawai'i's historical relationship with the UK. The Union Flag was presented to our King Kamehameha as a symbol of friendship and protection by Capt Vancouver. Culturally the combination of the St George, St Andrew, and St Patrick crosses in flag symbolically looked like 2 items representing Hawaiian chiefs - the puela and alia. The UK also acknowledged our independence and Hawaiian monarchs also favored Britain because of its friendliness and its monarchy.

  • Then why don't most of America see that..Can't even go on the Xbox without getting told to shut up.

  • Aye the "Sandwich-banner". Hawaii joined US for good, but after some "kind messages".

  • I thought they made the flag that way because they wanted to please their two main trading partners, the UK and the US (the stripes on the flag, except for the colors, came from the US flag).

  • This is also another theory that has floated around regarding the creation of the flag. The story has it that in order to please the powers of the Pacific, mainly the UK and US, a combined flag incorporated the Union Flag and the Stripes from Old Glory. Either way it pleased both Hawaiians and foreign powers whether the flag looked like Hawaiian cultural symbols (puela and alia) or used the colors/designs of the national flags of the UK and US.

  • Because of Hawaii close relationship with the UK. For a while it was protectorate of the UK, and the UK was one of the last nations to recognize the Republic.

  • Look closer, that is NOT Britains flag. It is in Hawaiian history, when the English came to Hawaii and to convert, thus came the Titles of "Queen/King" of the Hawaiian people. The flag however is a version of British and American making up the Hawaiian flag. It's only part of the story!

  • However the flag was inspired by the Brittish American and French flags. The Brittish influence is obvious and the stripes are of the American and French flags.

  • I agree with you!=]
