  • amazing just no other way of saying it

  • in all honesty is a fantastic drummer

  • Snare sounds a bit ringy...

  • God. Love derek's style, but I wonder if he could just lay off the pedal for a bit. Jesus.

  • @190908 if you are asking him to lay off the pedal it doesnt make sense that you like derrek's style when that is one of the things he is known for

  • THOSE TOMS SOUNDS AWESOME :O like chris adler toms !

  • @sk8erboy182 chris's toms sound like shit

  • Somebodyjones2 makes dead babies cry..

  • that snare sound...i don't know if like it or not.... ahhhh headache...

  • sabian is way better

  • that was great derek.

  • i didnt think that derek had it in him to play groove and jazz as well as death metal :O...

  • @Gregtendon - If you have any ear for groove-based, latin and jazz music, you'd know that he simply DOESN'T. He fakes the other stuff....his playing on other genres is laughable....he's just a fast death-metal drummer.

  • i know he's not a pocket drummer. i listen to jazz stuff, but i also listen to serpents rise. i know how roddy usually plays, so im just complimenting on the fact that a death-core drummer tried something new and didn't fail miserably.

  • gotcha

  • You called Derek Roddy a deathcore drummer? First epic fail, because he is a death metal drummer. And there are more death metal drummers (Sean Reinert, Kai Haito, etc..), who play jazz or have jazz as an influence in their playing.

  • jesus christ, this guy's arrogant...i just checked out the Jazz/swing video he made....that was some of the worst jazz drumming i've ever heard in my life...what douche to make that vid....as far as this video, i thought it said "groove." where the HELL is the pocket? this is such shitty (albeit clean and fast) playing.

  • Well he didn't make the video, so i don't see why he's arrogant, Mr.OMG-a-metal-drummer-tryin-to-groove-omg-that-just-sux-no-matter-what!

  • no...not "no matter what." just THIS guy's groove sucks ass....it's terrible. I actually regularly take a jazz gig with a guy who doubles in a metal group and he swings his ass off....he can hit a really tight shuffle groove, too. dude, look up the clave video that's in here....i explain myself well there. (or don't....i really couldn't give a shit whether you understand me or not) - i'm not automatically biased....i just call shit "shit" when i see it.

  • @somebodyjones2 you just can't give people some credit for trying right?

  • @asphixa - I can and i do. I take it back, okay? He tries to play other things and i guess that deserves credit....most people wouldn't do it so publicly; especially since they do it so poorly. That said: GOOD TRY, DEREK. I wouldnt let your playing NEAR some of the stuff we produce, though...sorry. I think the thing that irks me is how his devoted followers will actually consider this to be strong, musical drumming. It's not....it's a chops show.....

  • @somebodyjones2 I'm not promoting him at all..

genres like jazz or blues takes a lifetime to 'master' I guess. I'm in a metal band also but before that I was studying music at school.. so I don't know if I'm rly good at playing jazz, Probably not, but at least I try and I do like jazz alot, but also death metal and many other genres too =) What stuff btw? I would like to hear some of your tunes

  • If u have a music degree, then you completely understand when i say that mastery is a myth. If you LISTEN to a lot of jazz....absorb tony williams, bill stewart, etc, u can feel it. This guy reminds me of the players who just check styles off some absurd "abilities" list...after listening to his swing and "clave" work, i'm convinced he just doesn't spend enough time RESPECTING what he tries in vain to understand....as far as me, i produce records and have a song catalog..and play jazz guitar

  • @somebodyjones2 I do not have a music degree yet. I'm at an academy for now and this summer I will do an exam for a conservatory (lemmens). I understand what you mean, but you can't be sure of that. I'm not a drummer and I do not really know what it takes to be a really good jazz drummer, so I will stay out of that topic

  • @asphixa - good for you, man. Keep working toward it...and be sure to keep your ears OPEN. the basic point i'm making is that playing well in a genre starts with respect for the genre and develops into love for it...when that love is there and the knowledge of how to do what everyone before you has done, THEN you start getting good...your playing grows in intensity..and YOUR voice develops...it takes commitment and that's what a lot of drummers aren't willing to give it.

  • @somebodyjones2 Yea, I know it takes a lot of dedication.. I know lots of guitar players throwing the theory away and try to be the fastest guitarist out there, which I think is kinda rediculous

  • and im' sure with the heavily critical nature of the commentary i leave on material, you'd understand that i'm not going to open myself up to the "spite criticism" that would ensue by naming some of the work that i do specifically...though it IS globally available.

  • Ohhhh shit this is good

  • fuck yeah...sick ass groooooooove

  • never seen him with this many drums so far!

  • All the pacafists i know listen to metal.

  • Do I hear a freakin dog barking in that jam session, or am I just going nuts???

  • Haha I think its the overtones of his snare. I hear what you are talking about though.

  • @kingrukus You are stoned! I hear it tooo!

  • not bad but hes no steve smith at jazz just doesnt have the same amount of control

  • Ok look I've been a bashing asswipe and wrong about being caustic and rudt all the metal lovers and derek roddy. I want to apologize to everyvody that I have offended and I won't be doing this anymore. Sorry and Peace.

  • they should make a website where people just give other people sh*t, rrdrums110!

  • Melissa cross? Don't know her and you're avpoiding your band and recording contract search. But who cares what melissa's vocals require? They don't sound good period if she's the cookie monster style teacher. She did luck out and reach a sucker's market though. Yeas and jazz was always associated w/strip clubs prostituion and heroin addiction + reefer and alchohol. So? At least the patrons got tohear something worthwhile while they were coaxed or teased into something else whilst.

  • So it's okay for jazz to be associated with prostitution and drugs, but metal's not okay because it's associated with violence? That's the message I'm getting from you.

Your opinions aren't facts. Did someone forget to tell you?

  • Anything is bad when it leads to violence.

  • Or prostitution or adultery or drug usage...my point was that the "implications" of certain types of music don't make them bad and shouldn't prohibit us from listening.

  • Music or any other stereotype 'gateway' never directly leads into violence or other crimes. You think all those killers and school-shooters are doing it because they like Cannibal Corpse lyrics? They're initially fucked up in their heads, their music, video games or movies have NOTHING to do with their mental illness. NOT A SINGLE THING.

  • Did you even read my comment? Or are you just randomly replying to peoples comments trying to sound intelligent?

  • I actually tried to find your previous comment but no avail. So, my apologies for kinda taking you outta context.

But I still can't understand how all those dumb people think METAL is violence.

For what I have seen, kids who listen to Rap are all about being a tough guy and messing stuff around, where as metalheads are more of a meek, peace-loving kind. There's exceptions, yes, but I have observed this many times throughout my life.

  • I agree that no genre should be generalised but, I have never seen a "meek, peace-loving" mosh pit.

  • Hahah, but that's the point of it!

Aggression with a positive energy, you see!

Most kids who listen to Rap are usually taking their aggression on other people, feeling a need to beat up someone just for the sake of it.

And again just to point out to everyone:

Yes I know, stereotypes! But this one's really common especially here in Finland.

  • amen

  • if i could add about a million green thumbs to this i would

  • Hehe thanks :D

  • @Arthemesic what was that all of a sudden?

  • @ACMetan

What was what all of a sudden?

    I'm confused :P

  • @Arthemesic Crazy people will be crazy people, that's the truth. If you already have a sufficiently fucked-up moral compass to commit horrible crimes, you're bound to do it regardless of what habits you happen to have.

  • @antonio610

I couldn't put it into better words. Psychopathy doesn't exactly come looking for certain groups.

  • "LEADS" to violence? I know i'm late for the party here, but.....wha? seriously? Put some responsibility on the violent people themselves. Waking up in the morning and not having enough milk for your Cheerios can lead to violence for some people....

Let me ask you this? should these things that you believe "lead to violence" be controlled/stopped?

  • I have read all your comments so far. So you say that Derek Roddy doesn't respect Jazz, his playing on other genres is laughable and that he fakes the other stuff. I am sorry but this is just plain bullshit. He isn't the best jazz drummer out there, but he is still amazing.

  • okay, funnyhell666. all i'm saying is it's obvious that he really doesn't listen to jazz because he doesn't FEEL jazz in his jazz playing. it doesn't come out. maybe "respect" was misinterpreted, but i meant develop a love for....which he really doesn't play like he has...he's talented enough that it WOULD come out if he did.

and i'm going to have to disagree with you here: he doesn't amaze me.

opinions,...they're like assholes; everyone has one and they all stink. :)

  • Well. derek roddy has some videos jamming with jazz drummers (he has a lot of jazz drummers as friends) and he has fun in this videos. I wouldn't judge him by watching one video.

  • you must be one hell of a drummer to say this shit doesn't amaze you

  • what sounds good and what is worthwile is entirely subjective. So what are you going to do, ban all metal? ooooh, I'm so afraid. now, get out.

  • No I use the portrait of violence to point out that this music is the perfect background to it.Perhaps it is actually an inciting force to street riots or could be used for it. I think it has that potential for that type communication strongly. What are the cookie monster (singers? hah) lyrics saying? Is it viloent misogynistic raplike stuff?

  • Inciting violence? Perhaps. Then again, jazz could be correlated to prostitution and strip clubs.

By the way, Melissa Cross has developed a full curriculum for the "screaming" style of singing. It's legit and it takes as much technique as clean vocals.

Do you have a major hard-on for the cookie monster or something?

  • no it isn't. in nile's case (with whom derek roddy used to play) it's about ancient egyptian mythology. only chris barnes sings about violence against women (not anymore though) and it's still not like rap. anyway, the majority of metalheads are WAY too smart to be incited too stupid, pointless violence by music. the effects of extreme music are of a cathartic nature.

  • Ever heard of pornogrind? Everything is about violence to women. And it's funny. And no one gives a shit. Neither should you. I love lyrics about violence. Ever read Carcass' Corporal Jigsore Quandary? It's awesome.

  • yeah, heard of it, but never bothered reading the lyrics. i could argue, that porngrind is grindcore and not death metal, but it doesn't matter, really. nile has interesting lyrics which are not about violence against women (though they're still violent), that's what I wanted to say. but the "rap like" thing was actually bothering me the most. How is violence against women so different than violence against men? either is wrong, though I still like to read about it, no idea why. CARCASS RULES!!!

  • I'd +100 that comment of yours just because of your username, add another +100 for a great comment

  • Yeah but it doesn't include the cookie monster death metal thing and it never will. Go overturn police cars and burn em if you hjave unchecked hostility. Or better yet get in a ring. You'' ll feel a lot better after and won't be thinking of musical violence. Ugly stuff.

  • So you think breaking shit is more acceptable than listening to metal? You're one sick, messed up dude. Sorry if the rest of us don't release our emotions by being an asshole like you do.

  • Just that he's on the right track here. Weird to waana play metal garbage ever when you can be on the right track. Also if I want to make an ass of myself as you claim it's my perogative

  • There's more than one right track, bub. You really just don't get it.

  • Do you think I really care if drummers want to waste their time playing asshole metal garbage. But excuse the fuck out of me when i say "weird indeed"

  • Yeah, you do really seem to care. You care enough to bash them and make an ass of yourself, it seems.

  • This is drumming as opposed to his asshole metal garbage

  • Impressive, right?

Roddy usually likes to do "asshole metal garbage" as you so eloquently stated, which elevates my opinion of him. He does what he wants, not what other people want.

  • kid can do this AND speedy crap? wow

  • Heu...c'est un batteur de metal super fort mais franchement en ce qui concerne le groove...c'est comme romain goulon, il groove pas un radis.

  • yeee dawg ur rockin that pony tail

  • This is so much better thn his usual stuff, shame its not as popular

  • dishstyx: don`t forget kollias ;)

  • whaT A BEAST!

  • This dude's crawzy. Between him, Thomas Haake and Thomas Lang, dear god.....

  • you heard of Andrew Baxter?

  • Roddy's my favorite drummer because not only is he EPICALLY fast, but he's really versatile and can play anything.

I will say though, looking at this vid, I was expecting Roddy stop top halfway through and start doing some ridiculous blast beating at 300 BPM XD

  • he's the best.

  • why did he leave nile?

  • he is a session drummer its what he does.

  • His official statement basically said that after 3 years of work and touring the amount of money he ended up with ($600 ish) was scarcely justifiable and he couldn't maintain life back home off pennies. It's a completely fair shout to be honest.

  • that's fucking badass.

    seriously.

  • Now this is more impressive than his other videos where he just goes for speed.

  • I agree

  • Derek is awesome!

Really people stop comparing death metal drumming to jazz and funk drumming. Because a Jazz/funk drummer usually cant play death metal, and a death metal drummer usually can't play jazz and funk, except for the amazing drummers like Derek Roddy. It really takes alot of talent to play more than one style. I personally do metal drumming and i just can't follow a beat like this.

  • I don't wanna sound offensive, but why don't just learn how to play jazz oder funk ? The basics aren't that hard and it really will improve your style and play.

  • what kind of heads is he using?

    anyone know?

from the angle the vid it's shot at

the label kinda looks like they say aquarian, but i can't tell..

  • Remo Ambassadors

  • i was gona say derek roddy is shit he can only play fast blast beats but this video suprised me and proved me wrong. not only is he one of the fastest drummers ever he is also very creative.

  • i agree with you man

all the other videos ive seen of him were just really fast blast beats and i thought it was just lame

but yea this did surprise me also

  • true that

  • he drums too anything hes really good with jazz

  • Derek must laugh pretty hard when he reads these comments, about how "Yeah, it's pretty good, but...." how he uses effects and all that nonsense. I play drums, by the way, and this dude is an interesting player. No effects--period. But if it pushes you to be lazy players by imagining or supposing, rather than playing evil, then do your worst.

  • hard foot work very hard foot work.. amazing!

  • sweet

the best ive heard of him

    how low is the high-hat

  • those are rem ambassadors right?

  • human metronome

  • damn he got some shit there

  • is that untriggered?

  • if it wasn't, there'd be no ghost tones on his snare. ha. I think he uses mics most of the time anyways. But to answer you, no it's not triggers

  • sry i forgot to mention if the bass drums are triggered. im no drummer so i wouldnt know bout ghost notes on the snare xD i just wondered

  • haha it's chill.I'm pretty sure he's just using mics.

  • I really think it's cool how we're seeing a metal drummer do some nonmetal styles. Finally something more than noise and a double pedal.

  • I'd like to see you try doing that noise dumbass..

  • Well, considering that the noise is really just hats on the fourth notes and snare on the 1's and 3's, it's really nothing, dumbass.

  • that's not all there is to death metal you stupid prick...

  • yea except this man isnt a bitch and can charge those 1s and 3s to the point where he rips you a new asshole.

  • Drewteshoe, try this beat that u call nothing. you'll find out

  • Well this has gone a little too far...

I'm sorry that I offended you all with my opinion of metal drumming. I'll be sure to sugar coat it a little more next time.

And I wasn't calling THIS beat nothing, I was actually complimenting it. Try reading the actual post for a change dumbfuck.

  • i agree on the cool seeing a metal drummer do something else part, however "that noise" also happens to take alot of skill and coordination. I know alot of players such as myself learn how to go fast on double bass and hit things on time. But this guys metal drumming has alot mroe to it tahn noise.

  • I don't believe Roddy's "metal" is "noise and a double pedal............."

  • what sabian cymbals does he use??

  • trere called blecky blecky blow blows

  • no..

  • yes

  • AAX i guess

  • i found out on some web-site they are vaults

  • y not?

  • I guess he plays everything like a robot...

  • Someone keeps uploading these crappy low framerate videos of derak. I wish they wouldn't do that.

  • i would like to meet him 0ne day........amen.

  • this oughta silence all the shIt talkers, just cause he plays metal doesnt mean he has no skill playing other styles ignorant "bastads"

  • sorry spend ment sped up

  • this guys got mad skill i love derek for life his jazzy metalhead style is amazing any1 who thinks he sucks can go eat **** and produce a better drummer remember progresive music is more skill then rythem so dont give me a crapy rythematic drummer

  • Two words: Thomas Haake.

    that is all

  • nah just jazz..

  • Don't give you any citrus oranges, or sticky glue either huh?? Drums are rhythm you tard!!

  • And yet another proud moment for Derek Roddy=]

Fucking love this guy, Completely amazing,

and such a difference in music, He can jam and play jazzy stuff and then incorperate Deathmetal into it, Just amazing:D

  • lol

this is like jazz compaired to some of his other stuff derrek roddy is fuckin amazing!

  • dayum thats fuckin awsome!

  • tiene menos groove que un nokia 1100

  • Awsomeness.

  • that's fucking awesome.

  • His snare sounds so good in this vid...

  • yeah he has them tuned nice.

  • Hahaha, what happened at the end? It looks like he just popped out of his drumming dreamworld or something, hahaha, he's grooving and doing amazing, then all the sudden he completely stops as if he lost it! Hahaha, great grooving though, this guy really is the complete package, a death metal drummer that completely defy's all of the ignorant stereotypes labeled on DM drummers because of their speed.

  • look at his kit! tell that isnt awsome!!

  • jonny jm.. name me 3 death metal drummers?? if u cant then u dont know shit about death metal drummers.. death metal drummers is all about speed, control, technique... and they get their basic knowledge from jazz players.. so in other words.. death metal drummers are like jazz drummmers but on tweak..

  • omg that kit sounds amazing

  • gota have Latin to be a jazz drummer. im sure Derek could swing away.

  • nice latin jam there.. most jass dudes would kill for that feel

  • doubt it, jaZZ guys tend to swing a bit more than the likes of death metal drummers ;)

  • that ending was the icing on the cake right there, that was it!

  • It's not very good.

  • go ahead and suck off your slipknot and blink182 bands that can only write in 4/4

  • So - let me guess, Sardonic667 - you're basing his drumming on this video alone (which, btw, is awesomely cool latin-infused patterns that are apparently TEN MILES the fuck above your narrow-minded, Travis-Barker-up-the-ass excuse for a FUCKING BRAIN). Oh well.

  • I agree with Woodward, Joey Jordison is really nothing special, he's fast and sloppy.

  • no, just sloppy, Roddy and Mounier and stuff are faster

  • my god is it even physically possible to teach yourself this stuff:O

i have amazing respect for derek, he is simply amazing

  • what is your criteria of suck?

  • i would really like to see you do better

  • how cliche.

  • sardonic667 - if you can't explain why Derek Roddy sucks, does that make you full of shit, then?

  • wow you either arent a drummer, you are pulling everyones leg right now and just trying to piss ppl off, or you are the biggest dipshit I have ever seen post on youtube, even someone who doesnt like his style cant say that he sucks, thats just pure ignorance and stupidity. Plus you sound like a fuckin Moron Sardonic 667

  • and im supposed to care what you think why?

  • I do have to take a shit, thanks to Hardees... Dude, is it cool to be 666? I don't get it. Explain it to me.

  • this is drumming by far!!

  • I think Joey Jordison is an excellent drummer. But there are many other metal drummers that blow him out of the water on a technical level. That's the problem with these types of vids, and it goes for guitar vids too. Just because someone's not the best, he all of a sudden can't play for shit. It's like people complain that Romain Goulon sounds a lot like Derek Roddy. Who gives a shit, they both slay, and I think it's great that there are enough amazing musicians out there to be able to

  • fill all the spots needed in insane metal bands. Saying that Joey Jordison sucks at drums is like saying that, well, say, Flea sucks at bass because he can't slap as fast as Victor Wooten, or that Steve Vai blows dick at guitar because Shawn Lane can alternate pick faster. Grow the fuck up and realize that it isn't a contest, and that there is plenty of room in this world for as many amazing musicians as the world has to offer. I listen to mostly death metal but Dave Grohl is one of my

  • favorite drummers. I just like the way he hits really hard and comes up with heavy sounding drums without resorting to blast beats and shit. Do I think Shannon Lucas is awesome? Fuck yeah. Just grow up and learn to embrace everything. Read these from the bottom comment to the top, by the way, they weren't supposed to lay out like this.

  • Good post, yeah this guys a good drummer.

  • joey jordison sucks

  • Wow, a metal drummer that can groove as well. I'm impressed with this guy's versatility.
