  • Why do these a-holes wear wigs???

Don't they realize that it makes them look like douchebags???

  • Meryl Streep - Queen of Accents

  • As an Aussie, Meryl pretty much nailed the accent. She even got the kiwi overtones down pat which was part of her role as lindy chamberlain. genius.

  • She sounded more like a New Zealander than an Aussie.....she did a pretty good job of it none the less, considering her actual accent......

A controversial movie about an actual event when a baby went missing nere Ayres Rock in the outback. The mother,Lindy Chamberlin, claimed it was taken by a dingo (wild dog), she was later tried for the baby's murder and sent to prison. She was later released after further evidence was found that tied it to the dingo story.

  • A fantastic New Zealand accent!

  • Yaw tawking about moy baby dawta....not some objict!

  • It's true, Meryl's is better than Amy Walker from the '21 Accents' video at doing an Australian accent. Just about as close to 'nailing it' as I've seen any non-Australian do it. So close.

  • if you think her australian accent was good, just wait for her british accent in "the iron lady" :D

  • Hahahaha he always plays a judge.

  • Coming from an Australian, she did the Aussie accent well !!

  • Oh my god, her Australian / New Zealand accent is so good !!!

  • @Cabess12 Yeh she did an alright job with it....but her accent is leaning more towards a kiwi accent not an aussie accent... She's pronouncing her "e"s as "I"s. But still, not too bad for an American because Americans have trouble getting thier vowels flat enough. Americans hook all thier vowels, whereas ours are dead flat. In fact, they're the flattest out of any english language.

  • @Boltneck77 yeah? THE flattest? what about the Caribbean accents?

  • @3starbadman yep.....even flatter than that...dead flat.

  • Their are different accent's Australia wide.

  • de dingo atecha beybe

  • I've tried to mimic Australian accents, and it really is hard. I'm terrible at it.

  • Oh god, why are people saying this is an excellent Aussie accent? XD No, it's really not. If you are thinking of the exaggerated stereotype then it is.

  • @ScrewedUpMinds Actually It's a specific type of rural or archaic Australian accent. Streep did an amazing job at getting the subtleties. Haven't you ever heard Julia Gillard speak? Or Lindy Chamberlain for that matter lol.

  • Is this woman? how does she do it????

  • We have to give her credit for a sterling effort in getting the accent close ... it sounds a little bit like a South African - New Zealand hybrid, but she has got much closer than most Americans have managed. Well done!

  • @baldF

That's exactly how Lindy Chamberlain speaks, because her parents were "kiwis": an Australian accent with a hint of New Zealand accent.

  • Wow...great effort for Meryl on the acting!!

  • Wow great Aussie accent!

  • @MissDotti123 yeah. but a little stronger than the average.

  • This is my absolute favorite performance of Meryl's.I love the accent but I'm not an Aussie so I was curious to see just how accurate the accent was.So I watched an interview the real Lindy Chamberlain gave back when this was happening to her and I'm telling you Meryl hit it dead on.She sounds exactly like the real Lindy, she even said that she was trying to copy her.So if you think Meryl didn't get the accent right, watch an interview of the real Lindy. It's uncanny!

  • I ate her baby

  • I've never seen the whole movie, and I'm sure she gave a great performance, as the great Meryl always does, but after hearing so many people go on and on about how great her Australian accent was... I was disappointed. She really wasn't that great at the accent. And I say this as an Aussie.

  • Meryl does our accent justice!

  • she should have won that oscar

  • this is a fantastic scene. meryl is fantastic in it.

  • i'm doin forensic studies and were doing a report on the chamberlain case, i believe from what the found that lindy truely was innocent.

I think a dingo did get the baby but theres alot of storys about whats sposably happened.

    What does everyone else think?

  • My parents were holidaying at Ayers Rock in Jan 1979... they recall throwing scraps to the dingoes that were bold enough to approach the campsite, despite the fire or the people. Mum believed from the outset that she was innocent.

As for the accent, it's pretty accurate of the place and time; she was New Zealand born, middle-class and living in Ipswich, Queensland, a regional area. Search Julia Gillard or Pauline Hanson for a comparison.

  • @snowman20062006 however, she is doing lindy chamberlain and it is pretty spot on. true the aus is not perfect but as a copy of lindy's, who was born in nz it is fairly on the ball

  • One of Streep's six best perfomances- they rank

    1. "Sophie's Choice" (1982)

    2. "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006)

    3. "A Cry in the Dark" (1988)

    4. "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979)

    5. "One True Thing" (1998)

    6. "Julie & Julia" (2009)

  • @fusock have u seen her older movie Death becomes her? She is so attractively evil...on of my favs from her check it out ^^

  • Well U have certainly, absolutely, definitely wrong Sire. I think she's one of the best and greatest!

  • Meryl was tog ook zwanger in deze film was dat voor dat haar kind verdween of nadat????

  • She deserved to win the oscar for this movie, but Jodie was wore a great wig and it was her time to win.

  • Hello..I watched this movie yesterday..And it was awesome..very dramatic...but did they ever found a baby ??

  • Comment removed

  • @LinkinParkFan2222222 they never found anyhting, there have been a few conspirisies about people finding it and keeping it, but as of today they have not found azaria chamberlain and her death certificate says cause of death unknown.

  • What makes this scene so well done is that Lindy was from New Zealand originally, so Meryl has done what would be impossible for any American...an Aussie/Kiwi accent. "about myy baby daughta.....not some objict".

  • BREATHTAKING!

  • Meryl Can Actually Do Any Accent!!

Meryl Is Brilliant In EVERY Film!!!!!!

  • omg

  • Meryl is absolutely amazing!

    WOW!

  • Never seen anyone who wasnt australian do the accent so well.

    SHE'S AMAZING! =)

    KIMBO.

    XXX

  • check out Helena Bonham Carter in 'Till Human Voices Wake Us'

  • oh my god i seriously can't believe i am living on the same planet as meryl streep!!!!!! my god i'm breathing the same air and seeing the same sun!!!! its like a miracle!!!!

    she's incredible

  • *puke* You're out of your mind. She's just an actress not a messiah. Mind you she's a great actress but there are other great actresses and it's just make believe for a film. Relax. lol.

  • She was robbed of the Oscar that year.

  • @wisetraveller I completely agree! She gets robbed of the Oscar a lot of the time I think! With sixteen nominations in total and only TWO Oscars out of all of them, I don't think that's right. She's a brilliant actress, it shows in everything she does.

  • @wisetraveller she's robbed every year she's nominated for the oscar...she should have about sixteen of them by now.

  • this show is really sad

  • it's a movie

  • Let me guess...you are from SINGAPORE.

    Am I right?

  • I dont know how she can hold the accent with all that emotion... proper good...

love meryl streep shes soo amazing x

  • Wow...I've never heard an American do an Australian accent so well!

  • That's Meryl! She can do anything.

  • loveeeeeeeee this.

  • im learning about this case in english at school, i have seen this movie, and didnt know it was meryl streep til yesterday great job meryl.

  • Her accent is amazing! It reminds me of Madga Szubanski's voice.

  • Go Meryl

    im from Sydeny, Australia

and i think she done a

    great job

    x

  • Very convincing. Loved it.

  • I LOVE MERYL.

  • I am Australian, and her accent is so convincing! If i didn't know better, i'd think she was Australian.

  • not a bad accent but you can see her sort of strain when she has to talk.

  • she's "straining" becasuse it's supposed to be a delicate subject for her.

  • I don't see why an Aussie actress wasn't hired for the role. Streep is great, but why couldn't we have had a home-grown girl doing the job? Another example of the cultural cringe?

  • I'd agree with you if it weren't Streep playing this role and I'm sure the rest of the cast were in awe of working with her. And Streep's presence was needed to get the film as well as the subject matter more international awareness. More people around the world know about this case and its role in one of the ugliest times in Australia's judicial and pop cultural history because of this film and Streep's performance.

  • My mum is an aussie and was an extra.

  • Fair dinkum, Angel face? Who is she, or does she just mingle with the crowd? I hope she wasn't that vile creature who spat in Meryl's face.

  • lol no she was just in the crowd on the teps of the court i think she is wearing a bright shirt, she has curly hair, SHe looks allot different now tough lol.

  • Will look out for her. My Mum and I were extras in "Phar Lap".

  • aussie who gives a shit. Why not get the best actress instead. Streep was the best actress of the 80s and arguably the best actress alive today.

  • She sounds so funny!

  • splendid!

    i love meryl's performance here!

    the accent is good.

    she can pull anyhting off.

  • meryl is love.

    and thats cold hard fact.

    she is simply the best.

    no doubt!

i mean she is known for her accents.

who can pull off (different movie but oh well) a polish accent then talk german in the same movie but when talking german still has a polish accent.

    um..nobody but meryl..duh.

    meryl is love.

    no questions asked.

  • It is a movie based on a true story. Meryl does not have to talk exactly like Lindsay Chamberlain.

  • the thing is winslet is british Strepps an american

  • holy shit! her accent! omg shes so effing good!

  • OMG! i love her, she's the best ever

  • meryl is very good but she's not the best. helen mirren is the best to be honest they are both very good but helen's a little better.

  • I disagree with that. STreep is more versatile than Helen.

  • Well I think each one is great in her own way. Like alot of Helen roles Meryl can't play and alot of Meryl roles Helen can't play. I think they are very talented actresses but I love Helen.

  • I think Meryl could do anything. But each to their own, I'm sure if I had the kind of appriciation as you do for Helen, i'd feel the same about her. :]

  • Not many actors can get the auzzie accent down without it sounding, Kiwi or english, some auzzies can't even do it. Shes probaly the closest i've heard, actually she sounds a bit like pauline hanson :)

  • how can an auzzie not be able to have an australian accent?

  • Actually Kate Winslet in 'Holy Smoke' nails the Australian accent totally! Streep is bloody good as well

  • Winslet to me did the best Aussie accent ever.

  • Lindy Chamberlain sounded like Pauline Hanson. Lindy's voice was much more nasally then Meryl's impression. Still Meryl did a bloody good job Lindy would have to be the hardest character to portray in a movie.

  • No her voice was NOT dubbed, she learnt the aussie accent!!!

  • Of course it's not dubbed. Meryl Streep is famous for her accents.

  • I highly doubt that they would have dubbed Meryls voice. I can assure you that the real Lindy Chamberlain doesn't sound like that but Meryl Streep did such a wonderful job playing her. Really incredible the best acting ive seen!

  • Yeah, she got the accent right but not Lindy's annoying nasal Australian accent. I'm still trying to figure out where the hell it comes from. Australian jockeys have it, Pauline Hanson has it. A lot of older Australian women have it. I guess it's kinda rural.

  • I'm pretty sure her voice has been dubbed here.

  • No that's Meryl doingt he voice, and to make it even harder, Meryl had to learn how to do Lindy's slightly perculiar half-Australian, half-New Zealand accent, which is why some people don't think Meryl got the Australian accent right in this film

  • one of my favorite moments from the film. i also love the part where he's describing in detail what happened to the baby. meryl's nonverbal acting is always so chilling.

  • Why have I never heard of this movie? It looks amazing!

  • omg. this is so sad. meryl is incredible...as always :)
