Umm.. sure, trail and error is a very good method i use alot, i listen to music and try to hear every aspect of a song and then analyze it.

i then take important elements like song build up and transitions and try to bring them in to my songs. i sometimes try to recreate others work to learn more techniques.

this is pretty awsome trance, it provokes emotion like legit ones do, the pluck/piano sounding intro with the chorus and a bit of synth sounded like a meld of amazing sound GJ dude!

i think i used basic sine for the base and boosted it a little with a soundgoodizer and a compressor but might have used toxic biohazard to create the sine/sub base.. cant remember :P

i actually used nexus basic sine and tweaked it a little with some fx to get it more in the lower register but still melodic :)
