This has nothing to do with gays. Already in Roman times there were Thermen (baths). Some hamams in Turkey are really centuries old. I have been in such very old hamams and it was wonderful to sit there on those marble benches and see those lions' heads spewing water. When I was on the central (hot) stone plate, I was alone with a friend. We both imagined we were Roman legionairs back from campaign in Syria and enjoying a true bath. For us it looked as if real. Wonderful.
It is lovely to see how Turkish men get along so well among them. It might seem they are all gay but probably only few of them are, others might be bisexual and he rest are just heterosexual, however, that does not make a difference in terms of how close male friends can be and relate. Wonderful!

@smechereu as a Turkish i don't care about gays, they can have their lives as the way they want, we Turks are not against the human nature, we live in democratic country not in islamic regime so being gay is not forbidden in Turkey, anyone can choose any sexuality as he/she wishes, there are hundreds of gay clubs, pubs, discos everywhere in Turkey, as i said being gay is personal choice in Turkey and you can describe yourself as a gay to anyone without fear, what you heard is completely wrong.

What's more, homosexuality is part of Turkish tradition and history as much as ex. in Greece (and hamam plays important role in it).

@emilalipiev i have to disagree. you're generalizing. i'm dutch and most european/dutch people i know (including me) understand this cultural difference. they might say 'GAY' but most of them don't mean much by it. i know turkish men and asian men are much more physical w/ eachother and i don't think they're gay when i see them kissing eachother on the cheek or whatever or holding hands. and besides, the french do that too, and the italians, and they're european. so?

The Turkish culture is not tolerant towards them so gays hide like they did before it was accepted in the west. The only difference is that in the Turkish culture its normal for ALL men to publicly show affection towards each other and in the west only gay men do so, hence the misinterpretation of Turkish men's affection for each other.

It is not usal to eat, drink, dance and listen to music in a hamam, as I know. I have also been in a hamam in an arabic country..and there the ladies had their own hamam...(no man at sight...)..(I made ONE mistake.. there.(small mistake)..because it was so hot.. and I started nearly to faint.. I wanted fresh air..so I opened the door out (I had of course I towel on my body..) And I only opened the door JUST A LITTLE bit..to have air..but the women got scared and took me immediately me away from the door.. (and I know there was NOONE outside who could see me..)
