  • im not saying you need backpressure for say, but to have an exhaust not to big or too small in order to get the velocity you need for scavenging, the by product is a small amount of backpressure. so TOO MUCH backpressure kills power but too little prevents the most potential, you have to find the "inbetween" youre looking for

  • @kcole939 first off i apologize, second, i was right in my argument only i was arguing the wrong terminology...after looking back at my course material and a little research i realized i was talking about 'Delta pressure' commonly mistaken for 'backpressure'. its been years since i learned this stuff so i was not accurate. YES BACKPRESSURE IS BAD, easiest way for me to define it is, anything forcing the exhaust gases backwards preventing all the expanding gases in the chamber from being removed

  • @kcole939 ...but you do want a 'compression wave' (or some wave not sure of terminolgy) to travel back up the primaries and bounce off the closed valve and help suck (scavenge) the next wave of exhaust gas from chamber, this is where i was talking about finding the right size exhaust to get a sufficient wave, which i was confusing with backpressure, to optimize performance...so its a difference in pressure you want (DELTA pressure) NOT BACKPRESSURE...

  • you can run open headers for as long as you want if you can handle the sound,lol.you pass mess things up if you did something like run open manifolds or shorty headers for a long time.exhaust does have reversion and can draw cool air in and maaaybe crack a valve.any length of exhaust over that and the small amount of air drawn in is already heated enough

  • the fuel system was designed for back pressure so if you want your low end torque back you better find out how lean your car is running and fix it aka bigger jets or injectors

  • Backpressure is good on n/a cars to produce torque. On FI (Turbo/Superchargers) your statement makes sense. But without either of those, you want SOME backpressure.

    You don't WANT ANY backpressure. Backpressure KILLS power. What you want is an EXHAUST VELOCITY to match your powerband. Lower RPM's = smaller exhaust diameter. Higher RPM's = larger exhaust diamter. It's all about what matches your powerband, not sticking a potato in your muffler to "create torque" from the backpressure. Would you put CNC ported heads on an otherwise STOCK engine? Same deal.

  • @03eaton1 No, unfortunately, you are incorrect. Why do you think dirtbikes run exhaust plugs, AKA butt plugs? They have very short, straight through exhaust systems. When the engine is turned off, that very short, straight through exhaust allows cooler air to rapidly cool the valves.

    You can run open headers on nearly any 4 stroke engine you'd like as long as the computer is tuned for it, or in the case of a carbed engine, it's rejetted to richen the A:F ratio back up.

  • @03eaton1 Are you familiar with how most cookware has a teflon coated non stick surface? Ever had your wife yell at you for dumping cold water on a frying pan, to watch the smoke? Shocks the teflon coating. Exhaust valves work the same way. Rapid cooling due to open headers can cool the exhaust valves too quickly, causing them to warp. Same idea as piston expansion, which is why you're not supposed to romp on an engine until it's up to operating temperature.

    It elaborates on the topic of burnt exhaust valves, low end torque, and backpressure. That way you won't be another person who thinks backpressure is good.

  • @kcole939 first of all, since when does the car someone drives determine their knowledge?..and why are you using dirtbikes as an example? That's not what exhaust plugs are for! You're trying to use all these elaborate theories that have no data to support. The "cool" air would be heated by the hot exhaust, head and block before it got to the valves. I agree with the water part though, but air does not cool as fast as water, huge difference.
