@discouniverse ummmm melody & harmony are exactly what classical music is all about. you're never wasting your time when you're witnessing a masterpiece of art by someone like Brahms. give it a second chance! :)
For those who doesn't know this, there ARE words to this AWESOME piece, unfortunately, there aren't any on here, they are beautiful words to go with beautiful music, DON'T listen with your ears, listen with your mind, then you WILL be able to understand the music....it has put MANY shildren to sleep, I have hummed it to my children, children I babysat and ALL my grandbabies...
All you have to do is sit back and listen to this piece and you will be able to see what this song REALLY means.

Typical religious hatred. The world would be a good deal happier (and less violent) without you. And people did NOT evolve from monkeys. WE share a COMMON ANCESTOR with them. How stupid are you people? I learnt about evolution all through primary and secondary school, with the rest of the science curriculum. I learnt a lot about religion - that not a word of it is true and most of it is harmful. And some of it kills.
I believe we were created by a God. and some people believe we evolved from monkeys................Not SMH, I'm praying. BTW This song is a piece of art.
Why do all of you suck so much? You're all ignorant, pompous, and self centered for thinking that an entity (God) created everything. You are confused so you make up a bogus explanation for why things are here the way they are. Screw you all, and if there was a Hell you can all go there.
@tlockhart16 Go fuck yourself you stupid piece of shit. Not everyone of us makes fun of what you believe in, so why don't you shut your fat face you stupid fucking piece of crap. Damn. Just enjoy the fucking music and shut the fuck up.
"Slightly sugary"!!! Fer godsake, its a violin and a sweet melody. And the piano work does not seem to me "muscular" but consistent with the violin's melodic temperment.
Barenboim is an incredible musician. The way he brings out the muscularity of the piano writing to offset Perlman's slighly sugary style of playing is extraordinary.
@Giovanni222 i have a simple question for you, If I cam up to you and showed you a famous painting like the mona lisa. wouldn't you automatically conclude that the painting must have a painter?
@agentc0re what im trying to say is that, you dont need to see a creator to realize that He made the creation, the same way you can look at a painting and know that it had a painter and a painting is reasonably complex. information begets information, only an all powerful and wise creator can make a complex creation. the creating is vastly more complex that a simple painting.
@gnatural you must not understand the paradox of having an ultimate creator. Can your god create a stone that even himself cannot lift? That is just about as ludicrous as a painting must have a painter being used as a proof of god in "God's realm".
God's realm would have no rules, no law. God does as god pleases. Painters do not. Painters are constricted of the tools that they currently are in possession of.
@agentc0re the question to your answer is no. God cannot create something outside of himself which is great then he it just not possible, then he would cease to be all powerful and he would cease to be God which is a violation of his nature. there is nothing in all creation that it greater that is why he is GOD.
What made God? I'm not saying there isn't a God, but why be so restricted by our little human concept of God? Lets open up to other possibilities. There may or may not be one. A simple perspective shift can change your outlook on the whole thing.
And for this piece: it's gorgeous, it would such a perfect thing to use in a movie to get some tears out of the audience...
We are so used to everything having a beginning and an end, because we are born, we live, and we die (we dies because of sin). But God, has no Beginning , Middle, or End. He simply IS. That is why when speaking to Moses he says, "I am who I am" Exodus 3:14. And you are correct, our minds are so small, how can the created grasp the infinitude of the creator? it cant. That is why God is worshiped and we are to be still and know that He is God alone.
Our minds are too small to know whether or not there is a creator. We're too small to know whether or not a feeling of connection to a creator is our imagination.
I used to believe in a similar way to you. I know where you're coming from because I used to be firmly in your position.
Except, I just didn't believe in the God of a single book when I believed. There is a lot to know in this world... More than anyone could ever imagine.
@hellomate639 I disagree, to know that God exists is simple. Look for example at something like a painting like the Mona Lisa. you have never seen the painter. you have never even met him, yet you know he exists. why? the Mona Lisa is hundreds of years old, yet you know the painter must have existed in order to produce it. it is the same with a watch with requires a watch maker, or a car requires that someone you have never seen or met, create it.
Ah, but the answer to that point is simple: cause precedes effect from material to material substance, but to say that existence itself requires the same sort of start is an assumption. I hope that statement is simple to you as well.
Complexity arises from simplicity because that is how nature works. If you give something a few rules, it will repeat itself in complicated ways. The function y=sin(x)^(x+20/x) will give you a pretty complex graph, but the function itself is simple.
@hellomate639 you cant have an effect, unless you have a cause. you cant say that matter has always exited. we know for certain that in order to have information, there must be a source of where that information came from or rather created. that source is God.
Even in Genesis 1:1 In the Beginning (time) God created(Energy) the heaven(space) and the earth(matter).
Just in the first verse of the Bible, God declares that he controls all aspects of the universe.
@hellomate639 your dilemma is this though. you CANT give that simplicity rules to obey and become complex, because there is no original source (or creator) . even the very code you just wrote down, was thought of by a man, but there are mathematical codes in the cosmos which exists naturally because God crated the universe. nothing cannot create something, blow up and become an organized everything.
Please remember, we're merely having a discussion. No need to get so caught up in it.
There are a couple of very basic problems with this. If God can simply exist, that means that it is possible for something to exist without a cause, which also means that the universe can hypothetically exist without a cause.
And the only thing we've observed actually enacting a causal relationship is material. For example, matter comes together and warps space due to increased gravitation.
@hellomate639 sorry about the capital letter, i was not yelling just stressing the word "cant".
The thing is though that God does not need a cause to exist. He does not have a beginning, he has always been. he is the uncreated creator so he is also the first and only cause giving life to all things. He gives meaning to the universe because it was created by him and for him.
I'm not saying what you're saying isn't necessarily true (except for the Bible part), I was just showing that you why it isn't a proven issue. If God was proven, everyone would believe in God.
@hellomate639 Belief comes throught the work of the Holy Spirit. Man can come up with all kinds of legitimate evidence to prove that God exists (or doesn't exist) but none will believe unless the Holy Spirit moves in them. And one more thing: God is not manipulated by the forces He put into place. He's all-powerful. (By the way: how do you think those planets that warp space with their gravity got there? For that matter, how did SPACE get there if there is no Creator?)
Asking me how space got here is a bit like me asking you how God got here. If everything needs a cause then God needs a cause. If God can exist without cause, then space can hypothetically exist without cause as well. That's just how it goes.
How do you know that your feelings around God aren't just manifestations of deep primal psychology? Are you aware of how strong the brain can be? It can pick up things unconsciously that come out consciously in ways you wouldn't imagine.
@gnatural I am christian as well just ignore them, do not waste your time on these people. They will never believe some might though, but enjoy the music and just study your bible.
There are the wise, fool, and the wicked. The fool never listens and the wicked is beyond control, the wise will listen when you find them.
Now look to the creation. Look at the order and the beauty in a sunset. the artistry. look at how complex you are. the eyes have 150 million light sensitive cells, they are positioned to capture sight in front of the body, the nose to capture smell, the mouth to taste and the ears to hear. you are far more complex than any painting and we know that information cannot just appear at random, there must be a creator who made you and this wonderful creation. the world testifies.
Barenboim is so brilliant--look at how he shows that the triplets at 2:27 are pizzicatti. I really admire pianists who have an orchestral feel for pianistic writing--this is what separates someone like Barenboim from the usual "accompanist" in this music.
