Any tips for guys on bulking up? I'm not to worried about staying lean as I have a BF% of 9% naturally. Given that fact, what should I eat and what are the best exercises?
@Pineappletaco You can contact Michelle through her facebook page "facebook.com/profile.php?id=703666339&ref=tn_tnmn" She'll be happy to answer your questions.
My (honest) critique of this vid's content would possibly offend both its poster and her supporters (which I have no desire to do). I'll only say that at its best veganism is well-intentioned, but misguided, and offers a few valid points. At its worst it is dogmatism, and can be self-righteous. In either case it is fueled by a lot of wishful & simplistic thinking, and a worldview its practitioners want to believe is true. Also much inconsistency, if you dig deeper.
you say your vegan but you use creatine i respect your and your figure very much but creatine is processed through animal product. i want to meet a vegan that that does it without glutamine zma or other man processed supps. CAN IT BE DONE? if no one answers me i'll step up to the plate this is bullshit i see a lot of vegans that talk a good talk but not a lot of vegans who don't supplement
@aparham48 Creatine is found animal flesh (muscle), eggs, dairy, and some nuts and seeds. Our bodies can also synthesize it from amino acids. Although we can make and store it in our muscles, it is very challenging for an athlete (especially a vegan) to consume enough food, &/or store enough, to provide the benefit that a supplement will. Nearly all creatine supplements are are vegan. The same goes for Glutamine, which is paramount for muscle recovery. ZMA is a combination of minerals.
@aparham48 I weight lift without supplements and am within the top range for strength to weight ratio. If I want to look huge I'd need to supplement. If you want a lean natural look, should be no problem, though that depends on your body type. If you already have a big physique then that should carry through to weightlifting. If your small like I am, there's only so much you can do naturally to increase your size. I started at 145 and with weightlifting I am 157 pounds.

@hfelton About checking some of the ones I mentioned before such as Robert Cheeke, Catherine Johnson, Brendan Brazier, and Kenneth Williams? There are many strong and healthy vegans out there.
@hfelton Martina Navratilova, Hank Aaron, Carl Lewis, Daniel Bryan, Mike Tyson, Kenny Williams, Mac Danzig, Billie Jean King, Robert Cheeke, etc, etc.
Don't speak from ignorance; learn the truth and never allow a lie to pass from your lips nor fingertips!
vegans hahahaha. This is probably the most muscular vegan in the world. If you want to be a vegan, don't bother working out, just play the guitar and pick flowers. If you want to pump weights, eat Kangaroo Meat!
@triweeklyllama You may want to check "Vegan Bodybuilding com" to see "more muscular" vegans. It's about building muscle on a healthier and kinder diet.
@ViewHC you may have views that it is "kinder" to animals which is fair enough. "healthier" on the other hand, It is not. Meat such as chicken breast, lamb, roo meat, steak should be staples in any diet for someone that is trying to build serious muscle. It has top quality proteins and amino acids, iron, zinc, magnesium, vit and min that the body craves after intense weight. You don't see any vegan, or even vegetarian top athletes out their and this is for good reason.
@triweeklyllama There are lots of vegan athletes out there. Here are just a few: Brendan Brazier, Pro Triathlete. Robert Cheeke, Bodybuilder. Wendy Gabbe, Basketballer & Duathlete. Catherine Johnson, Elite Cyclist. Scott Jurek, Ultramarathoner, Kenneth Williams, Bodybuilder
@triweeklyllama Martina Navratilova was vegan throughout her career. Sister one more grand slams than any other human. She won Wimbledon at 50 years old! Compare this to the 3 or 4 year pro "careers" most women tennis players have today.
Oh, the Williams sisters are now seeing the light and eating healthy life-giving food (ie vegan) now!
Here's one for the haters: leather gloves; there's a leather waist belt hanging on the wall; I bet her "protein powders" probably contain whey, a milk product.
@fvalen001 Notice up close that Michelle's gloves are non-leather. Her protein powders are totally vegan--they come from peas, brown rice, soy, and other types. Since she doesn't own the gym where she works out, the leather straps in the equipment are not her choice. Hope this clarifies your observation.
vegans dont get complete protein sources. they also run a high risk of getting high cholesterol and blood pressure due to all the fast digesting carbs they eat.
@caIisthenic Not true. I am 25 years old and have been on a vegan diet for several years, and a few weeks ago I was checked out by numerous EMT's (I injured myself while skateboarding). They checked my blood pressure to make sure I was okay, and they were all shocked to see how low my BP was. Like many with low will-power and compassion, your information seems to be based more on your beliefs than actual fact.
Wow.. great body! ...Can you give me some information extra.. about vegetarians and vegans... diet?.. exercise... etc.. I am in the process of turning into a vegetarian , but some people of my family are concerned, they say that vegetarians are not as energetic as the people who eats meat ... Help! :)
i recently became vegetarian, and am transitioning into veganism myself. I am a 22 yr old man, so initially i thought of bodybuilding as you do,in order to change people's perceptions about veganism with my body. However i didn't go through with it as i convinced myself i was being vain, wanting a "better" body for selfish reasons and justifying it with the aforementioned logic. However seeing your video has inspired me, i realise my (mixed?) motives are irrelevant, the end result will be good.
I'm also a vegan bodybuilder. I made the same dietary changes as you did for the same reason, after seeing a documentary called: "Slaughterhouse, The Task of Blood".
It's vital for vegetarians and vegans to study nutrition properly to learn about things such as protein complimentation.
I've done my certificate of diet & nutrition, and I'm a certified personal trainer. Both help me reach my bodybuliding goals. :-)
U have an amazing body!!! I'm saving this video as my inspiration for the New Year to return to vegan from vegetarian & take my fitness to a whole new level post-partum...I want ur abs!!! Thanks for this.
"...misconceptions is that being vegan is that we don't get enough protein and that we're weak and malnurished. And that eating this way can be both difficult and boring. But it's really not. I don't mean to bash but if you really want us to believe this food is "exciting" dont sound so bored & robotic when you talk. It It'd be nice if you sounded the least bit enthusiastic about what you were talking about.
Very inspiring!!! Thanks for posting. And thanks for the mention of how cheap plants in their natural state can be...consistent with my book "Eat Vegan on $4 a Day!" ;) I ran my first marathon last year, place in 5K races for my age group, and help coach high school girls cross country. I do weight training as part of my routine, and as an AFAA cert. personal trainer, plants have fueled my racing for 30 years! Wrote "Eat Vegan" after too many news stories said you can't eat vegan on a budget. :)
Great comments. I was really looking for someone who has actually read the whole book though, so I can get a response to specific scientific allegations they make in the book. Not generalizations. Just trying to see how to refute the book when people ask me specific questions about it. A lot of paleo/primal's quote the book. Seems both sides of the fence are very insistent that they are right. Could it be there is a middle ground? More than one way to skin a cat?
Michelle, I would like to know what you think of the book "Vegetarian Myth".
It mainly says that vegens cause death by eating many live organisms. Also, destruction of the environment because of the fossil fuel it takes to grow the foods and the elimination of the earth's topsoil. Interesting read. I am simply looking for a biased opinion of the book from a vegen so I can hear from "the other side". I want you to read it...not skim it...and give me your thoughts.
Some small animals, insects, and bacteria do die in the process of producing, harvesting, and eating plant material. However, the same processes occur for feeding livestock, except at a greater degree. Livestock have to eat about 10lbs of produce to create 1 pound of meat killing more organisms during harvesting, plus the livestock animal when it is eaten.
Its impossible to eliminate all animal death, and feed the world, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try to minimize it.
@healthcoachpenny But basically, producing half a pound of hamburger releases as much greenhouse gas into the atmosphere as driving a 3,000-pound car nearly 10 miles. That is quite an impact on the environment.
@healthcoachpenny But keep in mind that plants are fed to the animals raised for food. So if you're eating animals, you're responsible for the deaths of all the organisms on the plants IN ADDITION TO the deaths of the animals you eat. As far as destruction of the environment, it takes much more of our earth's resources to raise animals for food. See the 2006 United Nations report on this subject. (cont'd next)
@healthcoachpenny It's all about intention and causing the least harm. Most of us (vegans) will go out of our way to save an insect. Just last night, as I was driving home, I noticed a moth struggling on my wiper blade. Its wings were flapping and legs holding on for dear life. I pulled off into a subdivision, parked, got out of my car, and set it free. I do wish that I never had to be responsible for any creature's death because of my food choices. (cont'd next)
@healthcoachpenny Thank you for your questions. I haven't read it. But I will quickly answer now, based on the synopsis you gave. When you mention "organisms", I'm assuming you mean insects and bacteria we are responsible for killing on the plants we eat. While that is true, I think most people would agree that there is a huge difference between insects and bacteria, and beings with central nervous systems, who are capable of emotions and feeling pain. (Cont'd next)
@healthcoachpenny The book is rightly named vegetarian myth because everything in it is a myth. About top soil? what do you think animals eat?
It is impossible to feed the current population meat without factory farms You could not raise chicken in your backyard if you want to eat one every day or even every week. Because it takes 180 days for a chicken to grown. Forget about raising cows.
20 kilos of wheat = to 1 kilo beef. Its clear meat erodes more topsoil that directly eating veggies.
@maharawj I feel that soy is fine in moderation. I eat it, mainly in the form of tofu, edamame, and some of the faux meats. When it comes to protein powder, I alternate between brown rice and pea as the source. They blend better and taste better than soy powders, but also because our bodies adapt very quickly to things. And just as I try to vary what I do in the gym often, I think it's a good idea to do the same with our nutrition (and protein sources). Thank you for your questions.
@vgnbbuilding fermented soy is fine in moderation. Asians used to consume fermented soy as a condiment. Processed soy its totally different and is a diabtogenic as per Dr. Gabriel coussens a vegan Doctor and holistic expert. It leeches the body of nutrition because of its high phytic acid(which unlike other beans is not deactivated by soaking or cooking) estrogen mimicking compounds and other nutrient blockers.
Soy is fine in moderation the same way meat or smoking is IMO. I was just hoping....
@vgnbbuilding ....I was just hoping I would find one more bodybuilder who does not use soy for the very reasons I mentioned :-). Since I see you did not mention soy. I was wrong :(. Thank you for replying.
