i know it's a scary moment in hockey but did anyone else laugh a bit when he fell back? cause i sure as hell did. i feel sorry for him but the way he fell was hilarious.
@furball411 well i was trying 2 bee foony but ur didnt think sa huh? u see u pointted out sumthing obvious captain obvious, of course the thin mask would kill em but you had to go and put ur 2 cents into everything dont you black asshole?
May I guess? I think he would have left on a stretcher at the very least. At worst he would have died within hours. The guys now shoot much harder than in Sawchuk's era and masks have improved exponentially since then (luckily for this guy), even the low end models, but as an aside you named one of my favourite goalies of all time!
lol this has happend to me a couple times and it was scary as hell, and it wasnt an nhl players slap shot either lol it sucks your ears ring and your kind of hesitant to get your body in the way of the puck for a couple minutes
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He did finish the game. And by the way it Doctor Dumbass to you.
On his bio in the Tampa Bay Lightning website, which is also on Wikipedia, it states: "On January 4, 2007, Smith was hit in the head with a 100mph slapshot causing him to miss a few weeks with a concussion..."
I dunno; I find it more of a focus point if I get hit in the mask and I'm having a bad game it kinda wakes me up; get's me back in the game. And if I'm having a good game I just shake it off.
Why shouldnt fucking forward put stick in front of defencemen? Usually they tip the puck over the glass... wich is good..... It only hits somebody in the face 1 time in every 10000000 times, watch any game and see how many times a froward puts their stick in front of a defencemen's shot.
yah sorry about that i didnt realize it was smith, i commented before i saw the name at first i saw the golden pads and immediately thought it was turco
One of the scariest things in hockey is being in front of the net, and never hearing the shot. Or seeing the shot, suddenly it hits a stick or a skate, and the next thing you know it's coming right at your head.
maybe my team mate was right, he said i could get a presure cut from using a players helmet with a cage on it, maybe if i play AGAin ill stick to my fiberglass mask
haha when you get hit in the face it stuns you, last time i got hit it didnt really hurt me because i got a good helmet but the sound of it hitting you makes it so you cant hear and the watter off the buck blinds you.
I also like how the oilers player called the coach over because he saw the goaile was hurt. good sportsman ship haha.
...Ok how could EASILY have broken through? First off, the cage is metal, and they are designed in a fashion that the thickest part of the bars face outward (think of an oval, how it's thicker one way than the other...the thickest part is horizontal for protection, but the leaves more room for the goalie to see) 2nd, these masks are DESIGNED for this sort of severity, and 3rd...if it were "easy" this hard, flush to the face shot, WOULD have gone through.
dude, look at the shot Nabokov got on his mask, the medal didn't do jack! It broke Nabokov nose. So yeah, he was lucky cause it can break. (look on youtube for Nabokov takes a hard shot off the mask) you will find it
Clearly you are missing the point. The metal did it's job by absorbing the impact...It takes a shit ton to make metal just "snap" and goalie masks are designed to make sure that should the be hit flush in the face, it does as little damage as possible... what you're arguing dude is like saying if a goalie got hit square by the shot in his chest and got a hairline fracture on his sternum, the chest protector isn't doing it's job, when without it, his ribcage would have shattered, you dig?
I understand your point put they aren't the best, that is what i wanted to say, there is still some improvement to make. Mask are the most complicate things to do because they need to be tough and protect the face but the goalie needs to keep at good vison. The equipment is to prevent injury but some are invitable.
yeah, but where it hit him was the one weakest point in the mask. the catseye cage only has a single metal bar between the eyes, if it hit him square like that anywhere else the damage would have been far less significant because there's more protection anywhere else, but there's always tradeoffs...traditional cages can obstruct vision but add protection, catseyes trade protection for vision, that'sl ife.
It does hurt, especially if you don't see the shot, but the worst of it is the sound, if it hits the cage, its manageable, but if it hits the side or the top, the sound just blows your ears out, painful
think about if he didnt have protection just at that spot....he'd surely loose like all of his front teeth... scary... i had an operation not long ago and its not fun... tho im no goalie..but i wanna be one
It would of been a whole lot worse than just missing a few teeth. That kind of shot can easily fracture a skull no matter where it hit. Just think about that girl who was killed in the stands when she was hit by a runaway slapshot. Thats why they have the nets around the boards. If you haven't seen it check out the clip when Nabokov's mask broke from a slapshot and the puck hit him in the face.
Now think about how awful it would be if we still used those god forsaken plaster masks...shit I still have the one my dad used...how anyone was crazy enough to think "Hey, this mask will protect me from a puck by sitting flush against my face!" I'm glad technology has gotten to where it has...
Agreed! but think, back then players didn't shoot that hard plus the sticks had a flat blades instead of curved ones. Even when the curved ones came around they still didn't shoot as hard as that shot. But you gotta love how things evolve.
Man that shit hurts when you get smoked in the face light that, i got hit last season struck me in the eagle eye cage but mask tilted in a way that it knocked my 2 front teeth loose,I beleave that was the mouth guard that ripped them loose when the mask got pried off my face from impact but it happened to fast to know exzackly how it happend, thank god for dentists.I gotta give pro goalies credit for just poppin on a new mask and continyou playin lol,Fuck your ears rings for next10 mins after hit
the same thing happened to Nabokov this past season against the NY Islanders I think. One of the wires in his cage dented and broke off giving him a huge cut. i hope i never take a shot off the face like that
