Ahhhh always these awe-inspiring musical events with an annoying movie around it which features boring people and their problems who don't give a damn about the amazing music in the background :D
To be 100% honest the ARBANS book should be renamed to the MENDEZ method.
This guy could play the ARBANS. Everyone who starts to play the trumpet should listen to this guy first to sharpen their skills then go into different styles if they desire so..
I don't understand all the "this trumpet player is better than that trumpet player" crap. Really, two people could argue for hours over whether Rafael Mendez or Clifford Brown was better, but while you're arguing, I'll be sitting back listening and enjoying and respecting them all. More fun than arguing IMO
@killbread1 it dosent matter if he is mexican.im MEXICAN and i dont play as good as he does.louis armstrong is black and he is a awsome trumpet player
@varscht It all boils down to style. When I sat in front of Maynard at the Blue Note, he was the best. When I played with Doc on his tours in the early sixties and so on. I'm with you. You walk out and say, man, that guy is the best. They're like salsa, they all taste the same, but they're all different.
Yes it sucks for me cause i live in the Rio Grande Valley way down south of Texas and the swine flu has gotten to the county next to us, which is not that far, i hope it doesnt come to our school :O
Where have all the great music people gone... why don't we get to hear music like this today on the radio or in Hollywood films or TV? Mucho gracais for loading this onto YouTube for us to see in 2009. Cheers

He is unsurpassed technically for the most part, but I really think his tone and sometimes his dynamics are not suited for more classical pieces. Regardless, he is the best mariachi-style player ever. I know that I will be "thumbs-downed" for this but I really think it's true.
you also have to remember that thats not exactly what they sounded. Recordings made then and now have greatly differed in technology. Listen to any other things done before the 50's. Dizzy and Miles sounded nothing like a trumpet. Like what they did later

I at age 12 in 1952 heard Rafael Mendez on a vinyl record and right then decided
I wanted to play trumpet and play like Rafael does. By age 15 I was making a living
with a five piece dance band. I continued playing including a stint with the Santa
Maria Symphony Orchestra. I am 71 now but my horn is still with me.
Thanks Rafael whereever you are. benjaminardanowski4@gmail.com
