  • Yermolinsky on ICC, which i q like, was slagging Caruana off recently: doesn't belong in such illustrious co., is only invited to the top table to make up the numbers b/c he's Italian or something - but hang on, he's a teenager, world top 20, still cutting his teeth! ... bit irresponsible i thought as Caruana strikes me as the sensitive type, such sentiments filtering back might knock his confidence

in fairness he semi-retracted this after Caruana gave a stellar performance next day, but even so

  • Outstanding

  • It's Nigel Davies who's doing the commentary.

  • @tigerchessvideo sorry got my Nigels crossed

  • As Short explained early on, 3...a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 doesn't actually win a pawn due to 5...Qd4 with a double attack on White's e4 pawn and knight on e5. But if White's pawn on e4 were sufficiently protected it would be a viable threat, and indeed 5. d3 threatened just that (Bxc6 followed by Nxe5). This is why Korchnoi responded 5. d3 d6 protecting his own e-pawn and thereby obviating the threat; 5...Be7 before ...d6 would have allowed White to realize his plan with Bxc6.

  • Nice clear video. Isn't this the first that Korchnoi defeated Caruana?

  • First time I heard you analising a game... Nice voice and comments....

    and good ideas understanding...

    congrats
