  • John R was the man back in the day. Listened to him every night.

  • @MAG315 But how about Randy?

  • Memories. This seems like yesterday. Thanks .

  • God all these years I thought John R was black, with so much Black christen music that I listened to as I grew up, weird. I remeber right on up AM radio until I went to Nam and my ass is mighty white. Dang but I enjoyed those radio shows, alone at night away from my folks

  • I discovered John R. and Hoss Allen on my old Motorola AM radio in my bedroom in Richmond, VA, around 1960. The signal from WLAC would fade in and out through the static but I was there every weekday night to listen in.

  • before john r. died, he had his tapes for sale plus the autographed photo. as soon as they came out, i wrote him and got a personal letter back. i treasure these so much. i grew up in south alabama and wlac was a staple on am radio. i'd go out of my way to make sure i tuned in every night. i copied the tapes to cd and and listen to them on occasion, remembering a time i can't go back to. what great memories from a true legend of radio.

  • I listened to John R every night in the early 60's.I still love the BLUES.

I want a 55 gallon drum of Royal Crown Hair Dressing.

  • I listened to John R every night in the early 60's.I still love the BLUES

  • I used to pick up John R in Toronto Canada. in the 60's.

  • wow, this brings back so many memories growing up in the 60s. when my family and i would be driving from ocala, florida from the church convention. we would be on our way back to gainesville very late at night listenin to John R on WLAC Nashville Tennessee. listenin to that good ole gospel music. i thought he was black all that time.

  • From 1965-1970, I played guitar in a white-boy soul band, riding around the southeast on weekends, playing for fraternity parties and such. I have great memories of riding home for hours late at night, listening to WLAC. We also listened to WWL and the Mull Singing Convention, featuring "the world famous Chuck Wagon Gang". Black soul and white gospel on the radio all night long, broken up by gas stations, peanut butter crackers, and Cokes in glass bottles to keep us going. Those were good times.

  • I grew up in Covington, Ga in the 60's. We couldn't pick up the only Atlanta Rock station WQXI (Quixie in dixie) after 6pm. I would switch over to WLAC & listen to John R. I was learned to play the guitar listening to his show. Been playing the blues ever since.

  • WOW! THIS BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF WHEN I WAS GROWING UP IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA DURING 1961. "THE HOSS MAN WAS GREAT." I WOULD STAY AWAKE AT NIGHT TO LISTEN TO HIM.

  • John R's show could be heard several states away at night. I stayed up late many school nights listening to him play blues and soul. I'm so thankful for WLAC for introducing me to that music.

  • @tubeamp I can still hear it in my mind THIS IS OLD JOHN R WAY DOWN SOUTH IN DIXIE ON W.L.A.C. THE VOICE OF THE LIFE & CASUALITY INSURANCE COMPANY IN NASHVILLE,TENN.

  • OMG, the memories of John R and WLAC are engraved in my mind. Back in the 50's and 60's my friends would drive miles with the radio blasting. The tracks he played couldn't be found where I lived and Yes I did order records for Randy's and Ernie's..LOL - Later I discovered Myrtle Beach, SC and Beach Music!! Thank you so much for the post!!!
