First heard this sung in a Manchester pub (Tommy Ducks). There were only 5 people there and an old lady asked for this song....then cried like a baby all the way through! A touching moment. Well done ;- Alan.
Andy, WOW! I did not know he died today. I knew he was close and in a bad way with throat cancer. The Irish Tradidional Music class lost a revivalist in the purist sense. In a way, he will be one of the "ones" that live on forever - he and Luke Kelly just joined in a session somewhere, we can be assured of that! The first song I heard him sing was "Easy and Slow" and it is still one of my very favorites - a song that gives advice that I hope to pass on to my stepsons if I am able. Thanks....
Thanks! It is a great song. One can't help but feel for the poor soul, I think we have all been there! Would love to hear you pick this one - I gotta learn your style! :-)
The style I use is purposely simple and straight forward. I like that sound without "busying it up" too much. I find it fits well with the type of music. especially the ballads and slower songs. Give it a try and see how it goes.
It Does! lol - "simple and straight forward" a friend (losthills) calls it something like "rudimentary flatpicking" in the style he plays. If its so "simple and straight forward" or "rudimentary", why oh why can't I figure it out? LOL, I can pick the banjo, and know several rolls, but when I transfer it to the guitar it gets all garbled up... exasperating! :-) Well... I'll keep trying!

The first time I heard this song was in 1967 and the singer was Paddy Reilly of the Dubliners. Beautiful ballad.

That´s lovely, thanks. You get the meaning of that song, or the mood that is in it, across really well. It´s from Scotland, isn´t it?

Don't forget to breath! (I almost did - which could almost be the same as alcohol abuse!)
