  • hey man great vid ... thanks for posting..

do you rekon you could email me the transcription... as i cant find it on your site..

    lukehorton14@msn.com

    thanks once again dude

  • its the most clear video that i saw for playing that groove, thank you very much for the good will: )

  • Yesterday I sat with it behind the kit and when I finally got it down it felt great. This is such a nice groove to play. Lots of fun

  • dude you need to put on a different shirt bro, it looks like you sweated the shit out of that one.

  • LOL

  • immense x

  • Nice sounding toms, maby a tuning video sometime eh fran? ;)

  • you played that cleaner than rodney did

  • even slow that grooves like hell!

  • You rule man, but the transcription is kinda hard to read. It is hard to tell whether some things are toms or snares.

  • thanks a lot man!

  • AWESOME i've been wanting to figure this out for a while!

  • thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome man! Yeah I've seen the DVD it's great.

  • thanks!

  • fucking cool

  • nice playing man

  • First two bars are paradiddles, third bar is single stroke, fourth bar is double stroke.

The second paradiddle is 'inside out'.

    First: RLRR

    Second LLRL

    Third RLRL

    Fourth RRLL.

Of course the hard part is getting up to speed and varying the placement of the strokes.

Nicely done. Practice the above sticking and download the score. Set the metronome to 60 and play each note as a quarter note. Mileage will vary.

  • Cheers man, gonna have a go at the now :P

  • can you two pls stop arguing?? Thanks!

    lets have sex nO

  • OH MY GOD!

  • Cheers, for putting up the lesson of the groove... It is a very cool groove altough it was very hard to play on a right handed kit as an open handed drummer :D Don't try it open handed :P very stressfull :D

  • Cheers, this helped a lot... I think i have manage to get this groove down although it was very hard to play as an open handed drummer on a right handed drumkit :P thanks for this vid :D

  • awesome job dude!! very cool

  • Thanks for the great lesson. I have refered to it many times while trying to learn the groove. What kind of cowbell are you using?

  • Wow - Thanks! Great transcription and playing man!

    D~!

  • cheers much... great video on the groove...

but its a bit harder for any drummer that dosent play their kit configured that way...

  • change ur shirt! haha =b

  • Thank you for taking time to provide the lesson.

  • It isn't showing the last comment I posted, but I wanted to say thanks for being so nice by putting the transcription on your website. Also, awesome job!

  • Thanks so much for the transcription!

    Good playing!

  • great work i love this groove

  • Thank you very much for the transcription. Somehow i still don't know if I'm right now in that groove or not :D

  • I love the sound of your drums, what equipment are you using (drums, heads, cowbell, mikes, mixers, the whole works)? I love that sound.

  • Ha bro if that's sweat on your sweater, I definitely see why. Great work bro.

  • I went to your website, and got the transcription! It's awesome, thanks man.

  • awesome

  • Hi Fran,

thanks a lot. I was going to transcribe that Groove myself. Now I can just practice it and put it in my toolbox...;-)

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Greetz from Germany

  • Thanks Fran for the breakdown. Now I have this groove in my toolkit thanks to you. I appreciate the slow instruction before the fast I think the slow really helped. Keep these kinds of things coming. Your rally a solid player you groove !

  • Awesome job, however, not to play devil's advocate, doesn't Rodney also throw in the heel toe on the hi-hats? The cowbell plus the heel toe really makes this groove majic.

Again, great posting, I like your way equally as well.

    'rah,

    Randy

  • This is only one small portion of the groove. There is also somewhat of a turnaround to the groove that I have in the transcription but it is not played in the example. There are a bunch of things that Rodney adds throughout his playing example. I picked the simplest part of the groove to post so it is learnable to a broader spectrum of players. I have a bunch of my own add ons to this groove but posting them all would take a lot of time. Thanks for the post!!

  • Hi thank you so much...i actually learnt how to play this groove through your transcraiptions. took me about 3 to 4 hours to learn it...a friend of mine wishes to take part in modern drummer contest. he is 17 years old. type in 'harshan drum solo' to see him play. he is the only drum prodigy from my country!! thanx again!!!

  • Thank you!!!

  • thank you

  • wow very nice. its funny cuz i was just gonna post a message somewhere and try to learn it. great groove and your vid helps a lot.

  • nice man! i'll try to copy you, it's hard though

  • you are the god

  • Merci Fran!!!

Depuis que j'ai vu le modern drummer festival j'ai essayé de reproduire ce fameux groove mais je n'arrivais pas à déchiffrer la cow bell. Maintenant c'est fait et je t'en remercie.

    BIG UP

    Mighty Benji

  • dang, that was good teaching, i'm gonna go try that now

  • that is fucking nuts.

  • Thanks Fran learned it now that was useful

  • no sweat on his forehead and the perfect symetrical pattern of his so called sweat makes me conclude that it is underwear that shines through and not sweat

  • Fran, your the man! Love your explanations. They are clean and can not be mistaken! Even nextprofundis should admit it, though he never sweats behind a drumkit..

  • Great stuff, Fran. This video has been extremely helpful.

I may be bugging you for lessons soon...

  • haha sick groove...is that a sweat stain on your shirt?haha

    gross

  • i tried to learn the groove after i saw rodney holmes for the first time i lerned it, but i had problems with the cowbell now its perfect thx man!

  • R-L-R-R-L-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-R-L-L

  • well he "TRIED" pretty good lol

  • Awesome video.

i watched it a couple times, went to my kit came back to watch vid again. i pretty much nailed the groove in about 1hr. i cant seem to keep the hi-hat goin though, haha.

    thanks for the video!

  • awesome demonstration. i learnt this groove a while back and its quite a teaser! if any of you can read music, write down each limbs rhythm seperatly and practice. better still, learn it just on the hi hat, bass & snare at first to get a good feel for it. doing that helped me leant it with more ease.

  • Great stuff, thanks for taking the time to do this. I've been working on this groove for ages.

  • gta say m8... most modest drummer iv seen. lyk ur style

  • Haha thats an awesome groove! Thank you for slowing it down!

  • good stuff right there man. Really difficult stuff too. Can't play that fast yet but i reckon the slower version sounded better in my opinion. Keep posting.

    Try some virgil soon

  • Nice One man....ive been learning this groove today and the ghost notes are really difficult to play smoothly when you go up tempo

  • clean

  • Yeahaha super awesome

  • woaw i saw the modern drummer DVD and this groove just blow my head thanks for breaking it up!!

  • does the sticking repeat or does it go para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, etc...

  • this videos so amazingly helpful i didnt even know about the ghost notes til i watched this

  • dude that is sick.

  • Nice one, thats a great lick.

  • Thank you Frank ! It really helped ! You did a great job with both the transcription and the video !

  • awesome, but the right foot action is so simple, the camera angle should have been on the hihat foot. still, awesome!

  • Really??

You think the right foot pattern is more simple than quarter notes which is what the left foot is playing on the hi hat?? That is interesting!

  • That is so cool

  • Since the exact sticking wasn't mentioned anywhere in the video, on it's description, or on the transcription, I'll put it here:

    RlrrllRlrlRlrrll

    Or: para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle.

  • Thanks russ!!

Just figured the slow version was more than enough to show the sticking clearly.

    Fran

  • thanks mate, i was having a bit of trouble there.

  • thanks alot man

i really thought that was cool

im gonna try and learn it

    cheers alot buddy

  • My band Mountain of Venus has had the pleasure of playing some shows with the Steve Kimock Band over the years. Rodney is a friend and teacher and as you know an amazing drummer. Thank you, keep it up.

  • Fran, That was awesome! What drum forums do you post on?

    Lori

  • very cool

  • awesome job mate! i can play that groove prefect now!

  • Congratulations!!!!nice

  • thanks

  • good job man.

  • the slow version sounded like u were a beat or 2 late with the tom parts. but the faster part,,. u nailed it.

  • Both parts are IDENTICAL. Just different speeds. Both are as written in the transcription.

  • Thanks!!! I've always wanted to learn this groove.

  • that was a great drum beat, it's classic,

    nice playin :)

  • Hey Fran, you played his groove very well. Looks like it is exactly it, thankyou so much for the transcription.

  • looks like you could use a shower stinky

  • LOL!! This was during the HEAT WAVE....no air conditioning....but.....needed the practice!! You'll be happy to know that I HAVE showered on many occasions since and my family has let me back in the house!!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • Wwwooo, that sounds soo cool when he plays its faster!!! Dam

  • nice
