Cheers, for putting up the lesson of the groove... It is a very cool groove altough it was very hard to play on a right handed kit as an open handed drummer :D Don't try it open handed :P very stressfull :D
Cheers, this helped a lot... I think i have manage to get this groove down although it was very hard to play as an open handed drummer on a right handed drumkit :P thanks for this vid :D
It isn't showing the last comment I posted, but I wanted to say thanks for being so nice by putting the transcription on your website. Also, awesome job!
Thanks Fran for the breakdown. Now I have this groove in my toolkit thanks to you. I appreciate the slow instruction before the fast I think the slow really helped. Keep these kinds of things coming. Your rally a solid player you groove !
Awesome job, however, not to play devil's advocate, doesn't Rodney also throw in the heel toe on the hi-hats? The cowbell plus the heel toe really makes this groove majic.
Again, great posting, I like your way equally as well.
This is only one small portion of the groove. There is also somewhat of a turnaround to the groove that I have in the transcription but it is not played in the example. There are a bunch of things that Rodney adds throughout his playing example. I picked the simplest part of the groove to post so it is learnable to a broader spectrum of players. I have a bunch of my own add ons to this groove but posting them all would take a lot of time. Thanks for the post!!
Hi thank you so much...i actually learnt how to play this groove through your transcraiptions. took me about 3 to 4 hours to learn it...a friend of mine wishes to take part in modern drummer contest. he is 17 years old. type in 'harshan drum solo' to see him play. he is the only drum prodigy from my country!! thanx again!!!
Depuis que j'ai vu le modern drummer festival j'ai essayé de reproduire ce fameux groove mais je n'arrivais pas à déchiffrer la cow bell. Maintenant c'est fait et je t'en remercie.
no sweat on his forehead and the perfect symetrical pattern of his so called sweat makes me conclude that it is underwear that shines through and not sweat
Fran, your the man! Love your explanations. They are clean and can not be mistaken! Even nextprofundis should admit it, though he never sweats behind a drumkit..
i watched it a couple times, went to my kit came back to watch vid again. i pretty much nailed the groove in about 1hr. i cant seem to keep the hi-hat goin though, haha.
awesome demonstration. i learnt this groove a while back and its quite a teaser! if any of you can read music, write down each limbs rhythm seperatly and practice. better still, learn it just on the hi hat, bass & snare at first to get a good feel for it. doing that helped me leant it with more ease.
good stuff right there man. Really difficult stuff too. Can't play that fast yet but i reckon the slower version sounded better in my opinion. Keep posting.
does the sticking repeat or does it go para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle, etc...
My band Mountain of Venus has had the pleasure of playing some shows with the Steve Kimock Band over the years. Rodney is a friend and teacher and as you know an amazing drummer. Thank you, keep it up.
LOL!! This was during the HEAT WAVE....no air conditioning....but.....needed the practice!! You'll be happy to know that I HAVE showered on many occasions since and my family has let me back in the house!!

First two bars are paradiddles, third bar is single stroke, fourth bar is double stroke.
The second paradiddle is 'inside out'.
First: RLRR
Second LLRL
Third RLRL
Fourth RRLL.
Of course the hard part is getting up to speed and varying the placement of the strokes.
Nicely done. Practice the above sticking and download the score. Set the metronome to 60 and play each note as a quarter note. Mileage will vary.

awesome, but the right foot action is so simple, the camera angle should have been on the hihat foot. still, awesome!
vinny81 5 years ago
Really??
You think the right foot pattern is more simple than quarter notes which is what the left foot is playing on the hi hat?? That is interesting!
funky2714 5 years ago
That is so cool
joedrummer14 5 years ago
Since the exact sticking wasn't mentioned anywhere in the video, on it's description, or on the transcription, I'll put it here:
RlrrllRlrlRlrrll
Or: para-diddle-diddle, four-stroke, para-diddle-diddle.
russelsparadox 5 years ago
Thanks russ!!
Just figured the slow version was more than enough to show the sticking clearly.
