@pavoman23 what's wrong with homo-erotics? it's just part of life, so who gives a f...? ah, of course, those who close their eyes for it! aka homophobes.
@aidavdbrake Nothing wrong with it if we are to discussing homoerotica in the general sense. I'm a huge fan of Yukio Mishima's writing and I really enjoy the writing of Harold Brodkey. What I disagree with is the overtly homoerotic interpretation of a classical composition which had no original homoerotic suggestion. I believe directors these days tend to take too many liberties with operatic productions and this would be an example of that. Please take your overly defensive act elsewhere.
@pavoman23 your statement wasn't specified as it is now, so one might, in such a delicate context, expect a defensive response. when i'd say: i'm slightly disgusted to always have to watch black women singing white roles, i would expect people to respond defensively.
funny thing is, it wasn’t until i read what you wrote about homo-erotics, that I realized you could see it like that. two men hugging doesn’t ring my alarm bell anymore, I guess.
about 'modern' directing… i'm a huge fan of kupfer, friedrich, herz, neuenfels and other felsenstein pupils (I specialized in the subject toward the end of my musicology studies) and if I may be blank: i've totally had it with all those shades of brown in 'classical' interpretations of la bohème and other predictable scenery. I think opera needed the new and fresh approaches. predictability kills.
@aidavdbrake What modern opera production are you referencing as you now require specificity in your argument. If you include Mary Zimmerman than I'll know what sort I'm dealing with.
@aidavdbrake The only person who'd require specificity on such a comment is a presumptuous brat which I can't help but feel I'm dealing with. I say homosexuality seems oftputting (def:striking me negatively) in a certain context and you make this defender of rightminded liberal thinking fuss about what constitutes part of life and equating others with hateful terminology, Your scare tactics could only intimidate people who want to think like you, fortunately I have no such desire.
@aidavdbrake Good way of avoiding the issue feigning as though you're too mature for dealing with serious questions. If you want to present strong opinions be prepared to back them up. Accusations and declarations of aesthetic superiority constitute as things which will be questioned, if you haven't learned that in 49 years I suppose you've lived in a bubble. If you want to discuss the specifics of your allegations I'll be waiting. Or you can leave without defending modern productions.
@pavoman23 What is astonishing is that opera brings out the moronic, supercilious, 'I am more knowledgeable than you' prats who claim the so called 'higher ground' - such as you. Opera was conceived as an entertainment and it is not the duty of the producer (or anyone else ) to explain his concept to 'lesser beings'. If it isnt clear it fails. If the role wasn't conceived and intended to be homo-erotic then it is wrong to present it as such. Suggest you stop burbling and leave others to listen
I've seen this production on DVD, and Rolando is really good. Altough I cannot imagine, anyone can do it better than Domingo. But Villazón too is a very good Carlos. Sometimes more Schiller than Verdi in my opinion, but I like it.
colora 40. Heaven! I thought we are talking aboat opera and not sexuality in 2010
But I don´´I ´don`t like Villazon Alagna is much better.

A bare minute hardly does justice to this grand duet in this truly grand opera.

The beginning was a touch homoerotic, a little offputting. But i can't complain with the singing especially Villazon, too bad he's lost it.

Ein wundervolles Duett und Rolando Villazon ist ein perfekter Don Carlo; zierlich, sehr hübsch, jung und natürlich mit fabelhafter Stimme.
