all you tossers that come on here complaining....spend your time more wisely making your own videos...the guy is trying to help. And I CAN sing and play the blues to this
"jazz, rock n roll, you name it, it's got the blues in it at one point or another...." .... ummm, i'm sorry, what did you just say to me!? i'm sorry, i didn't see "expertvillage" when i clicked the video... my bad, ill be seein you
I like that a large portion of the 132 comments made were by people who didn't understand what the guy in the video was talking about. This guys is actually very well spoken and good at what he does; he conveys concepts really well too. Now that said, most of the expert village drum videos (I can only assume that it doesn't get in better outside of this group either) range from terrible, to entertaining (but still bad).
You have no clue as to what your doin.Blues are not played with they are felt, and you are not at all one that should be showing anyone something you dont know anything about.
Although this guy seems able to play drums, he really has no clue about blues drumming. Ive played drums in quite a few blues bands. Whether a song has a 12-bar, 8-bar, or 389-bar chord structure has no bearing on the beat (feel or groove) employed by the drummer. However the groove is almost invariably some kind of shuffle, even if an extremely slow one. I dont know of any blues songs for which the beat played in the video would be appropriate.
This is NOT a blues beat! You can't just play 12 bars of any old thing & call it a "12 bar blues"! Christ - even a waltz'd have been closer than this lobotomised white-bread funk drivel! WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE ON?!?!?!?
@pgc6265 A "Twelve bar blues" isn't a beat or a groove! It's a song form that consists of three four bar phrases based (mostly) on the I, VI and V chords of the tonic key. You can put a twelve bar blues in any rhythmic context and it won't cease to be a "Blues". He obviously hit the form and the changes. Stop thinking as "Just the drummer" and be a musician.
Thank you for this good instruction. It is just what I needed to practice playing along to drums with my guitar and works perfectly in the 12 bar form. Looking for more of your work.
Look the guy can't exactly go playing ones and fives and sevens. Blues doesn't have a very typical format rhythmically speaking. It can sound borderline funk when it wants, it can sound like jazz at other times. A walking bass line can drop into either blues or jazz quite easily. Listen again to what he's playing and just imagine some typical blues like progressions. It would work if you wanted it to.
you could play a 12 bar blues to that.....it ain't maple syrup blues, it's hyped up a little... I would have gone to the ride during the last several bars before the turnaround....probably why i'm a beginner
that was crap you need to play the snare on the 2 and the 4 beats and you can play semi quavers on the splash and occasionally changing the beat on both the snare and splash symbols
I have a question.... How do you keep the high hat closed when using a double drum pedal? Dont you need your left foot to also keep the high hat closed?
there is a hi hat that comes with both peddles and when one is playing the other one is close in your case it seem like the hi hat was close and it was on bass peddle
i saw it on a Blues Dvd Package i bought not so loong ago called The Blues it has 7 Dvds with interviews, Stories, Biographys and stuff and one of the Dvds are directed by Clint Eastwood
Not in all cases, I think he breaks down each bar to make it easier to follow for novice players. You play the 4 bar three times, however, this does sound pretty different to how I play it at jams...

@pgc6265 you could call this BLUES! yes its kind of a funk groove, used a lot in blues (rock) too.
think of 'crossroads' by cream for example. Or a lot of seasick steve songs like 'You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks'.
