@MusiqOfAmani Thanks :) If I ever redo it, I may add the foot block and vary the depth of the barrel cut out to accomodate different stock heights. Let me know how yours comes out! :)
@tinfamily Ya will do. How did you decide how big to make the barrel cut outs (In the 12X6)? Thank you very much. I'm going to do it this weekend. I'm going to have home depot cut and sand the wood for me.
@MusiqOfAmani I eyballed it and made them oversized. If I were to do it again I'd measure and make it custom for each rifle, and factor in some extra room for carpet. It's funny but once it was done I never got around to carpet or padding or anything. The rifles just sit there anyway :D
Good because it's cheap. Actually, it can be done with one 4' length of pine shelving, which reduces the cost to about $12 (inc. a pack of "L" brackets if you need them). A person with some scrap wood and a handful of nails could build a variation of this for nearly free.
Also, the project is good if you're trying to fit a specific space, for instance, 1/2 of an office cabinet, etc..
Of course if the pre-made ones fit your space, you can buy an 8 gun rack that looks nicer for ~$40+shipping.
@justinking1995 It looks shorter than it is, it's a ($270)16.5" Volquartsen Carbon Fiber THM barrel. First generation. The new ones have compensator's on them. It looks shorter, because the barrel is quite thick. It's .925 diam. gunaccessories website has a good picture guide featuring the barrel. I only put Kalifornia legal stuff on my guns... they're pretty tough on what you can do here :\
I used all pine 1" shelving that I had sitting around. The reason I made the bottom come out so far is that it's the letter "C" and is freestanding inside my cabinet. With a long footbase, the weight of the rifles keep it stable without needing to secure it to my cabinet or worry about it tipping over at all. I can pull any one of the weapons off the rack without moving the other ones or shaking them. I just modeled it roughly after ones I remembered fro ROTC and the range way back in the day :)
I'm sure there's many ways to do it, I just picked the easiest and most flexible (taking into account my lack of carpentry skills) and whipped together something that was pretty solid for very little time invested. Actually I'd love to learn cabinet making and do some really creative stuff, but I don't even know where I'd begin.
Thanks, you could also just get some green felt, and staple gun or glue it to the base and inside the cutouts which will provide some grip and some aesthetics as well. Thanks for posting!
I bought some black art foam (the closed cell type) to do that and still haven't gotten around to it. Luckily it's scrap pine which is really soft and I don't move the guns in and out much. I guess I should make time and just get it done. Probably less than an hour of work, lol.
hi! thanks for your comment. I used 1.75" for the .22 and the 12gu (plain barrels) and 2.75" for the saiga with the rails and the depth of the cuts are 3", which gives it a very secure indentation for the barrel. On the base, if I ever redo it, I'll bring it out to 16" depth and put a small lip on the front. With the rubber at the end of the buttstock they don't move at all, but it'd be a nice extra safety feature. The rack really keeps the cabinet neat and I'm glad I made it.
Nice video my friend

@joeyisamartian Thanks :) Still works great. It had enough room to put in a rubber coated hook behind and hang a couple things 'inside'

And one more Q: How thick should the pine shelf be? And why 12" x 8'? Doesn't that leave a lot of extra wood?

And how much space is there between each slot cut?

What width and distances did you use to cut the cutouts for the barrel?

1.5 between and 1.75" on the ends, but after I had to widen the right cutout for the saiga, the right side is down to about .75 inch.
One day I should go back and do it over, but it works very well and no one sees it but me so... it's really low on the priority list at this time :D
