hi i want to save up and buy this as my first "proper amp" (at the moment i just have a marshall mg15 solid state practice amp) but im a bit worried about tubes in general. how often do i really need to change them and how much will this cost? any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
@skillzdatkillz900 Dont be worried at all- a tube amp is what you want, it will truely open up your sound! Tubes can be fickle....but they can also last for years. If ya have to replace em- just do it. Tube amp maintenance is the nature of the beast, and the price we pay for that beautiful tone! You will be stunned at the difference from your Marshall MG (nothing against em...I have a MG30 for practice).
@skillzdatkillz900 Tube amps are Always louder than Solid State. I'm not sure how many watts this is. However, one of my tube amps is an Epiphone Valve Junior, at 5 watts. I use it with my jam band, and it keeps up with the drummer without miking it-and it CAN NOT be cranked inside the house! No doubt, this amp here is way louder than the MG, especially cranked.
@skillzdatkillz900 More about tubes: another great thing is, different tubes can provide different tones. Do some research online about them. you can select replacement tubes that will provide a change in sound (more cleans, earlier distortion breakup, etc). With Solid State, you are limited. Glad to be of help- continue to ask me again/send me a PM if you like.
@dmedicFF ah thanks, just a thought though; this being a "blues junior", will i still be able to get that thick "crunch" sound i can get with my marshall (e.g. angus young/joe bonamassa)? ya know, where it's really heavily distorted, but still used for blues. i dont want to play metal or anything lol
@skillzdatkillz900 By itself, you may not be able to do it, but the Blues Junior loves pedals! With the right OD pedal you will be able to get to classic rock tones, but it wont emulate a Marshall tone.
@skillzdatkillz900 I would take your time and try several tube amps. It sounds like you want Marshall tone. The best way to get that is thru a Marshall! A Blues Junior and a Tubescreamer will get you overdriven Fender tone. Again, an all tube Marshall combo, even low wattage, will blow away your MG, both in tone, volume, and expressiveness. Unfortunately I dont know much about their offerings in the low watt combos.
@dmedicFF hmm, maybe a marshall ma100c would be ideal.... its all tube (i think?) and will give me the marshall tone, not to mention it will be much louder haha
@skillzdatkillz900 Yes they are all tube, and I think they also have effect loops so thats a bit more convenient if you use pedals. Keep in mind....its a 100 watt amp...I think they also have 50 watt versions....but thats alot of power. You wont be able to crank a 100 watt in your house, even 50 is too much
@dmedicFF well, i play loud as i play my MG15 on full volume on the gain channel.... having said that, a 100 watt amp is probably a little too loud haha. is the 50 watt gonna be that much louder than my MG though. This might be a completely ridiculous question but, like i say, ive only ever owned one amp haha
@skillzdatkillz900 No not ridiculous at all......the 50 watt will definitely be much louder. Even a 5 watt tube amp cranks. You may be able to play the 50 watt at home, low volume with an OD pedal perhaps. But cranking it will tear your walls down. You have to take your time and try lots of tube amps. There are as many choices and features as there are guitars. You will love the difference, and never go back to solid state.
@dmedicFF so wait... would a 50 watt be really bad for home use? i know on solid state amps you can get a really overdriven sound on low volumes but im not sure if thats the same for a tube amp.
@skillzdatkillz900 If the 50 watt has a clean channel, you may be able to play at home with the volume low, and a distortion pedal. But, to crank it, especially on an OD channel, its gonna be too much.
@skillzdatkillz900 Its all up to you. But I'll tell u what- I have a Crate Palomino 15 watt tube amp (dont make em anymore). When I put my MXR Overdrive pedal in front of it and adjust settings, I get a great classic rock tone (ZZ Top, Eagles, Frampton and others). That amp is essentially a Blues Junior- same size, tubes, electronics. So I would try the Marshalls and Blues Jr to see what you like. Take the guitar you normally use with you.....
@dmedicFF i think i have a solution. the blackstar ht5 mini stack. incredibly versatile, good build quality, all valve. only thing is, it's only 5 watts - will this be as loud as a marshall MG15? i only ask this because i hear valve amps are louder than solid state ones. hoping a 5watt tube amp would be as loud as a 15watt solid state.
@skillzdatkillz900 That will be loud- you would be surprised how loud 5 tube watts is. Cranking the MG15....you get a synthetic, overly harsh tone. Cranking tubes.....nice warm musical distortion! Blackstar is a good name- I have a tube distortion pedal from them and its excellent!
@jojojosmart yup, I don't know if they still have the limited edition one, but they sell a tolex version, and the tweed version witht he Jenson speaker. The tolex is 449, the tweed is 579.
Nice sounding spank. I have this amp and I struggle to get good clean tones out of it. But I have a black tolex one as well, it has better clean headroom.
This amp kicks ass. I understand this guys a novice, but I play this amp in stereo with my Marshall 50 watt jubilee and it sounds great for recording.
Some people are talking about vibrations - On my Blues Jr the springs holding the tubes in place used to vibrate and rattle against the tubes; a little fiddling will straighten that up.
I was getting vibrations with my amp, actually sitting at idle, and i check the power transformer...turns out the actually transformer bolts holding the plates together was loose, as well as the bolts holding it to the chassis. Tightening down everything, the baseline vibration was gone and the amp was much cleaner.
I've got the vibrations man. It sucks. The amp is amazing, but when you play at medium-high volume levels with distortion you get this annoying metallic rattling in the amp. Going to see what amp tech says.
nah its not the reverb. I've played with my foot on it and its not coming from there. It's the boards vibrating together I think. The backboard or the metal part under the knobs. Either way it needs to be dealt with immediately.
ya, i've owned two different fender tubes amps, and it is a trade mark hahaha. one thing that helps - move it away from the wall, which may have picture frames or other decor. that actually helps as well. the wall vibrates, too. it sounds best in the middle of a room.
i had an orange ad30r with a reverb tank in it that was just like fender tanks set at the bottom of the cab under the speakers. i had a rattle vibration noise coming from it too, so i removed the rtank out alltogether and 90% of the noise the cab would make was gone, some of the other little noises might of been from tubes or internal loose objects, but the springs in the reverbs will rattle and make heaps of noise
Teles are twangy and banjo sounding enough.. Sound even worse out of tune.
