@atm agree 100%. Gary's versions of Phil's songs show their differences perfectly. I think what Gary brought to Hot Water was some fire which Phil couldn't bring yet he couldn't match Phil's rhythmic touch. What really defines them both as class acts is that you can immediately tell it is them playing, regardless of band or age.
Cheers for this, it's been a while since I've seen this footage.
For sure one of the best songs lyrically they ever did and such great musical restraint without masking their abilities. Much as I rated Gary this is the song I don't think he ever really 'got'. Phil and this song are so well matched.
I saw Annie with them twice before this concert so I'd put her involvement as starting somewhere near the '84 period at least.
@andrewandseven -Gary is a very technical drummer compared to Phil, evidence is on the 'Staring at the Sun' LP which is rhythmically/musically more complex than all their other LPs. I love that LP and never tire of listening to it especially 'Man' and 'Heaven in my Hands' but World Machine has the perfect synth-pop production. Phils drumming is big and strong with the sequencers on that LP and I prefer it to 'Family' except for the superb 'Lessons in Love'!!! Now, where was I...
You can tell that Mark's voice is going when he omits the falsettos, and Mike is a little ragged on some of the keyboard parts. Looks like they are all knackered, but even in that condition, it still sounds good. I wasn't aware that Annie was working with them already in 1986. Anyone confirm that?
@morganroussel thanks for the nice video! if you have the song Something About You from the same concert, I'm sure lots of people would like to see that too!
