I know that it's rather sad, but the views that the character of Treize Khushrenada actually have place in the world today. However, in actuality, the people who detest the idea of the dehumanization of war are always demonized and looked at as warmongers.

simple answer because if people don't lose the ones they loved to war then nothing would stop people from conducting war. Also solders must believe in a cause or ideal to fight. machines dont fight for any cause and even if your opponent was crushed how could you take credit in victory if all you did was hit a button. it goes to point that war must be real and humanised because it takes away so much from the enemy if they lose.

When you realize his vision, and his sacrifice, you also realize that, while is the antagonizer of the entire war, he is also the single greatest hero of the show.

It is good that you understand this. Most people would watch that show and go: "Wow. Explosions and big robots."

They do not see the deep philosophical meaning behind characters like Treize and Zechs.

Though the two (Treize and Zechs) had a marvelous idea for the future, it is unfortunate that their ideals required great sacrifice of life. However, for such a revolution to occur, I suppose only a violent event of biblical proportions would suffice. It was Relena's pacifist views that made it possible for her to take over.

I have the box set for both GW and GitS lol. Both are wonderful animes. I personally liked the original Ghost better than its spinoffs, but the others are good as well.
