  • Not a lot of drummers wouldnt even bother to look at some of the older cats, looking at drummers from back then is my inspiration, my favorite modern day drummer is aaron spears but we all learn differentt ways so

  • Mr Groovzilla, you are 1 lucky guy,I would hv done anything to get pair of Stick from the late great Tony.

  • i saw tony williams at jazz alley in seattle back in the early 90's. i actually met w/him during a dinner break and he gave me a set of sticks. my ex-wife worked at jazz alley and set up the meeting. it was really great to talk with him. i remember after one of his sets the manager of jazz alley came up to the stage and asked him to play lower...so funny...what a joke. tony williams is loud - thats his style.

  • Gristle + finesse

  • Best god dam drummer this planet has ever seen!

  • I am going to practice this solo just to check my cardiovascular system...hope to survive.

What an icon of drumming this sir really was. I discovered Tony in my twenties when I was very fond of prog rock/jazz and workshiped Peart, Gadd and Colaiuta, all of them masters on their own right. But Tony is just special, cant explain it.

  • tony is maybe one of the most deliberate yet free drummers I've ever seen. Absolute total genius....

  • this guys in the wrong band...

  • @ziberfantom HUH? Maybe you don't know this but the band is "vamping" which means they are repeating a musical phrase for Tony to solo over. The whole tune was not in this video clip, just the drum solo over the vamp!!

  • You know, just coming back to this, one realises why the man is an important drummer. His work is rhythmically innovative, not chops alone.

    There's a remarkable difference.

  • i thought that simon phillips was original, boy was i wrong for so many years this is way better

  • whats the name of this song ?? thx

  • The drumming Art at its apex.

  • I love that he rocks a pillow in his kick too.

  • I've just been watching a load of vids on here of Weckl and Vinnie. And I loved them, and thought what fine drummers these boys are. But then I come back to watch Tony. And there we are. The man. The best.

  • @teetomthomas yup

  • @teetomthomas Yeah man I hear you. Weckl and Vinnie are great but they have no sound. But Tony damn is just an innovator from his approach to his ideas and the way he hits the drums just produces a tone like no other. And his FEEL Fucking incredible. There will never be another Tony Williams.

  • @CHC4669 vinnie definitely has a sound

  • @CHC4669

" Weckl and Vinnie have no sound " Really?

  • @MrQstixx in terms of using the latest of state of the art technology in clinics ,gigs etc..

Tony could get his sound out of any kit any time given.Vinnie & Dave are phenomenal drummers what so ever.

  • He dies soooo early...he had ESP. And the finest ear I've yet heard for how a set of drums should sound played improvisationally. You have to hit the things to get the sound out of them.

  • The greatest drummer who ever lived, period. Every major genre incorporated into one style.

  • i love the fact that he defies what is deemed the proper jazz drum set up!! no coated head on the snare so...no brushes even though he can kill it, big toms stylistically tuned to rock...to my drum bruhs out there try showing up to a gig with that set up and watch the comments fly out of their mouths...swing it hard and hit hard and mean everything you play...thats what tony was about, INTENTIONAL MUSIC ....I LOVE IT!!! ,

  • mi #1

    no hay que decir mas

  • You can't top Tony. All of the power of rock with all of the sophistication/ intelligence of Jazz. Matched grip, even. Hit hard as hell that way, with huge sticks. He didn't fake it like Chambers or the rest of the poser frauds. Tony was 100% soul, all musician.

  • @Asymmatrix Saying Chambers is a poser fraud should be punishable by law :P The rest of your comment, totally cool though.

  • Im not a drummer, I play bass. I would like to know why he switches grips from unmatched to matched within the solo. Any drummers out there?

  • @rkfromchi There isn't really a reason. He probably just like to play with the traditionnal grip (unmatched) for light parts and the 'matched' grip for the heavy stuff :p But he could most likely do all the solo with one grip or the other

  • @rkfromchi When you know both grips in and out, some drummers - myself included - feel traditional grip (unmatched) gives you a different feel about the sound, whilst matched gives you FAR greater efficiency, better movement, and better control. Some drummers do it to "stay loose" but really it's just preference for snare work to use trad. grip sometimes.

Matches is the best grip overall by far, however.

  • I know what you mean. I can't play jazz with matched grip. It feels too heavy handed for me. So for that I go with trad. Same way I can't play the heavier stuff with traditional- i gotta go with matched. I think it's best to master both though.

  • What a drummer! All the chops you could ever possibly wish for, plus an extraordinary ability to be a unique and totally creative musician. Great video.

  • Amazing is Tony Williams. Outstanding technique. Improvisational genius!

  • All The Greats Kick Butt!.
