oh, and when i started, the restaurants were mcdonald's, little caesar's, and subway. now it is taco bell/pizza hut, biggy coffee, and subway is still there.
p.s. the den has been in 2 locations since i have been there, neither of which was the original location. the den has been in 3 locations total, but it is still there.
i have been going there since 2004. i am now a grad student there. the arcade was there when i started. the arcade was where campus trends is now. campus trends is NOT a bookstore. it is women's and children's clothing. textbook alley is the bookstore, and that is now where the bowling alley used to be. the discount den IS still there. it is just in a different place that is much larger, and just called, "the den."
Haven't been on campus since 2003, but the Bronco Mall still looks almost the same as I remember it...then again, that video is from 3 years ago so it may have changed since then.
It's a decent school academically, and kzoo is a great town. Try to live downtown in the "student ghetto" for the full college experience. I hated WMU until I moved downtown. Whatever you do, don't go to Grand Valley!
@iramo191 GO TO WMU!!! im a student there currently its amazingly fun. and if you play an instrument join the marching band you'll make so many friends that week before classes.
I go there in early May almost every year with my parents for a huge medieval conference. Back in the early 1990's they had video games in the lobby of all of the valley's and up until about a year or so ago they had a mini video arcade in the basement of bernhard. It made me sad to go there last weekend and see them go. But I still had lots of fun feeding the fish and ducks in the pond that's infront of valley 3.
I've been going to WMU since late 07 at the latest and don't remember that arcade (I think I would). I imagine that's where they now have the computer lab (seen at 2:54).
Don't really remember the neon lighting all over the place, and there also should be bigger signs on stuff now...hard to tell much of anything with this video quality though.
The computer lab has been there a long time. The arcade used to be after the computer lab, after the elevator on the right (3:10) which is now a bookstore
So I have a question I am thinking about transfering to WMU and everyone seems to love it and miss it so much... so I was wondering what makes WMU such a great place to go? Thanks guys
Hey, Im currently a student at WMU and its a great place to go because its not too big but its not too small either. The people there are really nice and welcoming, there are plenty of activities to get involved in, they offer plenty of opportunities to get involved, they have many ways of teaching that can suit any kind of student, there are computer labs and libraries all over the place, and yes there are parties most weekends.Theres rarely a dull moment at WMU and no im not just saying that.
Hey thanks a lot I am definatly going to apply and I hope to play Lacrosse and join the cycling team. I love Michigan so I can't wait to go out there and visit.
Chong Hin, I was there 12 years ago, graduated in 1996. Your name sounds familiar... your video brings back those sweet n bitter memories. Life's a challenge in Malaysia and I still say the same after 12 years, buck for buck, you dont get what you expect of life in Malaysia. Hope I could have the spare cash for a family trip there one spring, when the tulips bloom in front of Lee Honours building. Is bird cage still there? The Discount Den?
the den is still there, it's just known as "The Den", not "Discount Den" . it shows up as "Discount Den" still on credit and debit card statements, though
God, I miss WMU. Transferred out in 2002 because of the cliques within the theatre department. I don't miss that part, but the memories of that place... I miss dearly. Great memories, a sad happiness. Thank you for the vid.
I graduated from WMU for more than 5 years, but didn't have chance to come back..because I'm an international student. This video brought up so many memories...I missed WMU.
I worked in the Bernhard Center during my entire time at WMU. I was in the Bronco Card office for three of those years, it looks like a lot has changed around there since. It was hard to tell though as the video cut off at the end. Nice work. Go Broncos!
The reason the video cut off at the end is because the entire backend had been renovated and turned into a bookstore, which was unfamiliar to me. When i was there, there was a bolling alley at the back end !
I took these videos last year. It has been 10 years since i graduated from WMU. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to return last summer with my wife for a visit. We were foreign students, almost exactly on the opposite side of the globe, in Malaysia. It was a 24 hour flight all the way to Kalamazoo.
Do check out my other videos of WMU/Kalamazoo that i have posted. Comments are always welcome.
As a Western Alum, it would be great to see someone (maybe one of the student organizations) take a camera around campus (including the East Campus) and take a tour around the buildings and campus grounds. Western is a great school, there's no reason such a video should not be on You Tube.
