Remember the US foreign policy at the time held a strong stance on neutrality and being "isolationist"... thus the us was forced to join after pearl harbor being attacked directly. This bomb was only 20 kilotons which equal the explosive force of 20,000 pounds of TNT (nuclear weapons use metric tons as measurement, not the english system.) Now we have had bombs up to 50 megatons which are equal to the force of 500,000 pounds of TNT. Also, the human race has designs for thermonuclear warheads that can have an explosive force of more than 100 megatons. I just hope we don't use these modernized nukes in future wars.

Also, the largest nuclear weapon in history is the "Tsar Bomb" from Russia which was 50 megatons (originally designed for 100 megatons) and had a yield of up to 57 MILLION tons of TNT or in other words, the weight of 270 Empire State Buildings worth of TNT. But, I also hope that these types of weapons are never used.

Because casualties with both sides factored in would reach the millions, invasion of the mainland was out of question. Instead, allies presented Japan with an ultimatum, surrender, or face the Atomic bomb.Leaeflets were dropped to warn civilians. Japans leaders, of course chose option two. Rejecting the ultimatum.

If Japan had managed to make their own nukes, they would have launched without hesitation considering how suicidal they were; especially once they were losing. A country's purpose is supposed to be to protect its people, yet Japan actually encouraged suicides and let its civilians die out of some sort of false pride. The emperor was never even prosecuted. Murder becomes easy when done with a pen, something the emperor learned well.

There is a conspiracytheory where the US knew about the attack but did nothing to make sure that the US people would want to go into WWII. 4) That's incorrect, they have ancestory from all over Europe, even from Asia. No doubt it had to be done, this saved more Japanese lives than anything, invasion would of killed millions of civilians, men,women,children were all being trained to fight the invasion of the Islands. Those 2 bombs that killed less then 200,000 saved millions and millions because an invasion of the mainland of Japan did not have to happen.
