  • I have to say, this is still the greatest video I've seen on YT even more than a year later.

  • Good stuff!

  • All I see is Fringe.

  • as beautiful to look only to listen: thank you

    Thanks Isaac!

    Hope you're doing well :)

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That looks like Jason Edmunds fiddling right there!

  • @KristianHerner

    You know it buddy!

    Living the dream :)

  • This just put a huge smile on my face - so nice to see people being creative and thinking outside of whatever box someone else might put them in. Great dancing, great music.

  • very cool!!! music can bring folk together , or set them apart

  • i love this. totally made me smile.

  • I love it! <3

  • Neat.

  • God love yah! Group hug!!!!

    I love Toronto.

  • God love yah! Group hug!!!!

  • So good. What talent on both sides.

  • ahhhh, only in Toronto.

  • cool as feck

  • would like to invite you all to the Unvarnished Music Festival

    billkeitel

  • So it's black people caint dance, then.

  • sooo torontonian

  • I love this city!

  • @Deem979 Oh... okay. I see why you'd think my response was rude. Getting late for all of this but let me politely respond. When ever people bring up Africa (either as a region, or site specific cultures therein) as a valid source for contemporary expression such persons are generally responded to as you've responded to me. Some may take this as very rude. But I don't. How could you respond in any other way? What I'm wondering is, what would Africa be like if history were different? Regards.

  • I have an irresistible urge to watch Fringe for some reason

  • wow, what a sweet little slice of life! I love my city.

  • I miss Toronto. O Canada!

  • That was awesome...St John's Newfoundland Meets Toronto...communicating with dance and music.

  • I love my city. Stop thinking about it, just be! Toronto fucking rocks.

  • Nice! It's this sort of thing that makes this city such a great place to live. I love the modern dance applied to the old reels!

  • Completely impromptu. Love it so much. Hope I see this some day too.

  • Fantastic!

  • @davidAnonsen If you can't see the beauty in this, then there's something wrong with your perspective.

  • @ionahoopii Telling me my perspective is wrong. I don't know what gives you that authority, to me it doesn't really look like the buskers are going along with this so muhc, they don't say thanks or bye when the group finishes dancing.

  • @davidAnonsen If you would read a little further down in these comments you will see the fiddle player (fiddlingjay) has posted here and he has the video as his favorite on his channel. Does that seem sour to you? Anyway, it's all about spreading joy. This music is meant for dancing, these dancers were respectful and appreciative of it. In my opinion, it is life at its finest.

  • @Deem979 Yes... the influences never end really. I agree. But, it's my job to be absorbed in the African American experience (no, really). It's my job. And also a great pleasure to discover yet again how vital the musical expressions of captured Africans came to define much of the sounds that came out of the United States (and elsewhere). That young kids can hear it and dance to it makes complete sense to me. Respect also to the early Celtic folks who were able to adapt to African rhythms.

  • @tesladrianne, why are you trying to compare this to America!?!! You have obviously never been to NYC, where this is a regular occurrence at every major subway stn.

Your comment just reinforces the inferiority complex suffered by many of us Canadians.

  • Great fun and great talent from Toronto.

  • This - THIS is why I love my city!

  • This is awesome, I always see great stuff walking around town, but nothing like this!

  • Canada really does put the multi in the cultural.

  • Instant Classic! This is why I love Canada.

  • CA NA DA ! CA NA DA!

  • Yes! This is great!

  • This is totally awesome. The Toronto subway is great for bizarre multicultural and multi-genre mashups; was highly amused once by a busker playing "Papa was a Rolling Stone" on a bassoon.

  • Definitely a Canadian moment (a Vermonter's opinion)~

  • Fiddlin' Jay and Benj Rowland. You make Peterborough proud guys!

  • @PHJimY

Thanks, just trying to do our part to make the world a better place :)

    Jay

  • somehow i knew this was in toronto. i have a feeling this doesn't happen very often in america.

  • This is brilliant!!

  • Sounds like they're playing "Cumberland Gap" to me. I could be mistaken, though.

  • @RobertELee01

We're playing 2 tunes. The first is "Little Billy Wilson" and the second (at 2:20) is "Blind Steer in a Mudhole".

    Cheers,

    Jay

  • I hope I am not the only one that appreciates the coming together of two totally different "cultures" for this video. This is SO EFFIN COOL!

  • DANG guys, that's pretty awesome.

I hope I bump into you guys whenever I'm in the downtown area. It seems you guys are freestyle ravers. I just hope y'all will keep up the good work and continue to entertain us,

  • EPIC!

  • I LOVE that this is happening in front of a Fringe poster ;)

    Yay for Clawhammer Banjo.

    Yay for pop dancing.

Yay for people exploring music that they probably don't dance to often

Yay for showing respect for the arts (dance and music)

And most of all - yay for all that talent in one place! I wish I was there to enjoy it!

  • This is fantastic - but would be even cooler if the dancers tried to do something with the rhythm and musicality and phrasing that was provided by the musicians. The dancers kinda just created their own dynamics and tempos on top of the music, and I would have really loved to see them intertwine more!

  • @ekliebs For my money, I think it's fantastic that they tried to blend the two styles... they got their inspiration from the music, but drew on what they knew and understood. That's how the greatest collaborations are formed, and new things are developed.

  • Just tap your foot and you'll see that they are indeed dancing to the tempo of the song -not just their own tempo over the top of the music. I agree that they could certainly interact more and given a bit of time they could. Personally I like the juxtaposition of throwing the two contrasting styles together. The musicians could have changed to a hip-hop groove too. Hey -that would have been cool.

  • Yes! Yes! Yes! The BLACK WILL ALWAYS DOOOOO!!!!!! Nice that Black culture is so loved by white folks even back in the 1700s!!!!! It always comes back around. This is classic!!!!

  • heheh goood one;

reminds me if the NFB did a live action film of one of the anomated doodles

  • righton.

  • sooo awesome :)

  • lmao the fiddler guy and bango guy are so tiered at the end lmfao

  • Yup, this is in Canada. And they are so awesome, very talented!!!! Speechless.

  • okay i think this dancing was more mj inspired than miley cyrus but as they're both favorites of mine i think its awesome to see them combined ;D

they're so talented, only in places like canada and america could you see this happening in a SUBWAY. just amazing.

  • oh mi gawd, thats fukin coooool :DDDD i wanna b able to dance like that

  • This is in Canada. But sure, fuck yeah.

  • Oh my god. I swore this was NY or something. But... like, Canada? My homeland? No fucking way. Frickin' awsome. xD

  • @Sherigami oh damn that must have been embarrassing

  • I was really hoping people would start pooling money at the buskers. :(

  • gotta love moments like this. I have fond memories of entering the Downtown Toronto subway once, and being greeted by the sounds of a cellist and a steel drummer playing "Evergreen."

  • luv it :)

  • I don't know who's having more fun, the players or the dancers. They're both pretty good, though.

  • someone help me!! when do they start the pop it, lock it part??

  • LOL amazing

  • lmao

  • What a joy

  • Blind Steer In A Mudhole

  • What is the 2nd tune they play? The first is "Little Billy Wilson", but I can't remember the name of the 2nd one. It's on the tip of my cerebellum. Help with ID, please!

  • i was feeling depressed but this cheered me up! everytime i think of all the crap that goes on in school and i rember, its just 4 more years ! after that you could explore the world ride the subway meet awsome new people and witness things as great as this. Theres just so much out there to be mad at the little things. yes i got that all from one video (:

  • its a daily rutine with most ppl there so ppl tend to ignore, and because ppl are ass holes! lol

  • Fringe in the background :D

  • this is sooooo cool!! ^_^

  • Are u guys from Newfoundland?? Just currious cuz it kinda sounds like Newfie music! lol.

I thought this video was u guys doing the hoedown throwdown from the Hannah Montana movie! :P

  • hahaa i was thinking the same thing (:

  • This is AMAZING! I would want to see this live! A mix up of cultures, coming together to entertain onlookers. While improvising and having fun with their artistic passions.

  • @eyeThinkHot: Nah, this is one culture rejoining after 300 years of distance. Black folks in the United States were the first to play this combination of fiddle and banjo (and African instrument that came here through the Caribbean!) Crazy sounding, but true. What happened with Jazz, Blues, Rap, Funk, etc., also happened with early old-time music in the 1700s. Same ole, same ole. This is a great video. Many who have not found it will find it now. Take care.
