Cylinders are usually better for objects whose cross-section is either square or circular. Boxes, however are pretty much universal, since their dimensions are readily changed.
Cylinders are good for things like the upper arm, neck, thigh, shin and fingers. Boxes are well-suited for torso and trunk, wrist and forearm. You can further carve these shapes down to suit your purposes - wedges, pyramids, cones, whatever fits the object best.
