There is a lot of tension and a lot of focus on ethnicity, more than I've seen in any other western country with a mixed population. In my country the terms black and white are also used, and that's what most prefer. So if you're English and living in England, and if you're not told otherwise, don't worry about it. They're cool, you're cool.
