Seems like a very interesting project. I have my concerns that the fuel tank might explode. I didn't look at the instructions though so I'm not sure what safety measures are in place (if any).
@hagelt18 The fuel tank will not explode. I threw countless aerosol cans into fire pits back when we used to burn all of our trash (remote area). They only explode if the can is heated while the top is outside the fire and even then not always. There is no oxygen inside the can so a flame traveling into the can is impossible. The discharge tip is unlikely to melt because the gas and propellant have a freezing effect. This is basically a giant lighter albeit a very cool one.
I beg to differ with you, the polar bear would't stand a chance.
Cause I really don't use this for bear protection, I use it to start campfires when the wood is wet. I really wouldn't want to but I'd shoot the bear with a real gun, although I still would have this thing.
You should try to keep your language clean in public.
Yep, if someone like you were to posess it, it would be stupid and reckless. Good thing for us you don't have the skills to build one, or for anything else other than criticizing what others do.
@PDRWLSN In fact it is because I have the skills and understanding of how to make one of these and what it is capable of that I also understand that only a fool like you would want one.
Seems you have an affinity for name calling, how childish. There is nothing you could say that would convince me that you have any skills at all, or understanding of how to make your own meals let alone how to design and build something more complex than a sand castle.
@PDRWLSN I have no need to convince you of my skills. But it seems obvious that you have little understanding of the fact that Youtube is not just seen by people who live in a world of snow. Many places in our world are dry like tinder that could be devastated by a fire spreading from an idiots flame thrower toy in his back yard.
If you had a clue you would not be publishing on Youtube instructions for a stupid and pointless toy that has the potential for such devastating consequences
Acually I do understand that Youtube is seen everywhere, I mean who doesn't? That's exactly why it's been published here. I also think you believe we should idiot proof everything because of the few that are common senseless. Lets just outlaw forks now because every year a few kids impale themselves with one. We can outlaw campfires just because some live in arid environments. The more we idiot proof the world, the more idiots survive to procreate and dilute the population.
Also, the initial blast melted the top of the snow, which immediately re-froze and created an ice layer on top of the powder. This smooth lens on top of the snow is tougher to melt.
The reason it can't melt snow is because it's not a real flamethrower. It's not coating the snow in flammable material, it's just hitting it with fire. If it were working like the real deal, that snow wouldn't stand a chance.
Really? The reason it's not painting the snow with flamable material is because the material is butane and burns almost completely.... almost, take a closer look at the end of the video. After the flamethrower is out the snow still has some residual unburned butane burning. The reason it doesn't melt the snow much is because snow has incredible insulating qualities, ie: it's 90% air.
@PDRWLSN Well flamethrowers are designed to leave material behind to continue burning. If it were to leave the same type of material behind as a commercial flamethrower, the snow would probably start melting. And modern flamethrowers operate with Napalm which burns quite a bit hotter than butane.
Good job, you just lit the snow on fire...

The same pricipal as a disposable lighter or propane torch.
The fuel is under pressure and no oxygen inside the fuel tank to support combustion.

I see, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining that!

The idea took the amount of time it takes to get a campfire started with wet firewood.
The design about 25 hours in a cad program.

This flame flame thrower, is amongst the most stupid and reckless things I have seen on YouTube.
Only an idiot would want to make one and such a person could cause a vast amount of destruction and loss of life.
