There is a time for everything, and putting kids into school just when they are beginning to learn about the basic foundation of life in this world is to be honest scary if it isn't from their very own parents. Just because we have a Government doesn't mean we need to shove it in front of everything that has a huge problem.
Plus, it's great if parents can build their relationship with their child by reading to them, and later, teaching them to read. My parents taught me a lot before I went to kindergarten, and being rewarded with pride from your parents when your little is a positive experience for children who will learn that there is a reward for learning. Kids love nothing more than hearing "good job" from a parent and from showing off new skills =P

I don't think its the fact that Pre-K is not working. The FACT is that public schools are Failing!!!! They are Dumbing our children down!! If I had the money My Kids would go to a Private school!! The Public School SYSTEM is not working,

I am the Director of a preschool. The same people who can't teach our children in public school make and require the rules for any program who will be giving pre-k. Levi is right: our private preschools are far superior to the government preschools. Our children are actually learning. i went to both a private one and a public one when i was little. the public one was decent, but the private one was far superior. the private one even had foreign language instructors and fine arts, music teachers at preschool because they thought it's better if children start learning these at a younger age. the public school didn't provide any of those programs.
Yes...the private school was much better (as I can attest) but the true question is...what the fuck did they teach us...either one? It was the subsequent attention to personal education that brought me out from under their propaganda umbrella into the light of knowledge and understanding...an understanding that so much of what you "know" is bullshit. My kid is now out of the clutches of this warehouse system and is home-schooled. I'll be damned if they'll get their meat hooks into him again.

No sense in teaching higher education to poor pre-schoolers when any education from there on will be inadequate in sustaining what they were taught when they were 4. With all the budget cuts it will be a miracle if public schools are even around in the next 10 yrs. Thing is home schoolers are expected to teach from the gov. education guidelines, which in themselves are inadequate to living and working in the twenty-first century. Private charity deals with helping people SO much better than public. Private charity workers want to do well to have a good charity, and they're doing charity because they WANT to help people. Government workers in the welfare department have no incentive to help people.

The preschools receiving government funds no longer need to be competitive due to the enormous sum of money they receive per child. We either become even more superior hoping to convince parents to pay for preschool, and hope to survive. Or we lower the quality of our preschools to meet government requirements and no longer produce children who have a quality education. Yes, it would be easier for Levi to accept government funds, but it seems to me: She cares too much for that.

I am the Director of a preschool. The same people who can't teach our children in public school make and require the rules for any program who will be giving pre-k. Levi is right: our private preschools are far superior to the government preschools. Our children are actually learning. If we want to keep using our learning methods we can't accept government funds: we can't give free Pre-K. If we don't give free Pre-K we must now compete with a free product in the market.

Dillon, the parable of the Good Samaritan did not mean doing good with stolen (i.e Taxed) money. It was meant to show tolerance and respect for different people. The Samaritans were the discriminated people in times of Christ, so the parable was to show that one can expect good from even the most discriminated lot. You totally missed the point of the parable.

With people paying $500 and $600 a month on preschool few can afford it. Then people bitch about why no one can save money. For the ones that can afford it, put your kids in a private preschool.

I don't know where YOU take your kids for pre-school, but where I used to live, private pre-school is dirt cheap, thanks to very entrepreneurial teachers that set up shop in their homes, low regulatory impositions, good quality education. Where I used to live? Mexico, where the Gov. does not try to make everyone open a school that looks like a shopping mall.

gladiator1010, it is much worse than you think: opening a new private school is such an expensive affair due to the rigorous regulations and expenditures it has to undergo, as imposed by local and federal authorities. The public school system gets the added benefit of a PROTECTED market. In order for better schools to appear, onerous regulations have to disappear. Let people open a school in a house if that helps, but why make people build huge, expensive buildings just to teach?

Best point made, but see how some liberals and fascists will retort with something like "The Constitution is obsolete", or "It was ratified by white men", or "It is a 'living document' so it should be 'interpreted' to fit the times" (which would make the Constitution meaningless if "interpreted").
Indeed, the Constitution doesn'T give authority to the FedGov to educate everybody, even less to make it COMPULSORY (i.e. Slavery)

this is stupid, i went to a govt run school in Nigeria and it was excellent. The school building was ok, but the teachers made up for it. Theres no way private companys can provide a good cheap education the way some govt does

That's bullshit in an out of itself. What's good education? Governemntal standards, our country is full of driveling fools and so is our school system. Provide some proof against the private system. The private system is more diverse and makes our society better.

i went to both a private one and a public one when i was little. the public one was decent, but the private one was far superior. the private one even had foreign language instructors and fine arts, music teachers at preschool because they thought it's better if children start learning these at a younger age. the public school didn't provide any of those programs.

Yes...the private school was much better (as I can attest) but the true question is...what the fuck did they teach us...either one? It was the subsequent attention to personal education that brought me out from under their propaganda umbrella into the light of knowledge and understanding...an understanding that so much of what you "know" is bullshit. My kid is now out of the clutches of this warehouse system and is home-schooled. I'll be damned if they'll get their meat hooks into him again.

Public schools blow! I should know, I've been through the system. You can learn more at a Barnes and Nobles than you can in a high school room. The only class I give credit to are the math classes. Well, half of them anyway. LOL.

Many people are fooled into believing a paid government employee is going to greater love, better educate, and care more about their children's well-being. Look at the disaster in K-12 education! We choose to homeschool all four of our children and it is a huge blessing to the entire family. Bigger government is stealing more of our money to further weaken the famililes in this country. Parents, step up to the plate and be a parent. You CAN do it!
