You should take full advantage of the Nor-Vise rotation when you are dubbing. It spins the stuff on really well. Also when palmering, you can run the thread with the hackle, or twist it in when the bobbin is on the storage post. This makes a pretty bullet proof hackle for buggers, and it might be kinda ugly, but it doesn't spiral the fly in the water or air.
fold that stem (of hackle) back on it self, it really locks that stem in place. also instead of using wire as your rib, wrap your thread around the hackle, sort of like peacock herl, wrap the thread with the hackle back, and then wrap the thread back up. this really reinforces the hackle, in my experience the chenille, or hook will break before the hackle.
