@Logan329100 Please read the some of the explanations below. Steyr is Austrian. This is a variant of the AUG produced by Steyr in the US for the US market with some US made parts for legality. Steyr AUGs fully produced and assembled in Austria were banned from US import like all foriegn produced "assault rifles" in 1989.
Oh and why the FUCK would you need to change the barrell in an assault rifle that runs 30 round magazines? If it was a light machine gun, then yeah.. But there is no need to switch barrells on an AR in the battlefield. They're not meant to lay down heavy suppressive fire. The barrell will cool enough in between reloading small quanity (30 round) magazines, unlike LMG's like the M249 SAW that can run up to 1,500 rounds continuous fire until you have to either change the barrell our let it cool.
@NowKillYourself I agree, the AUG looks funny, and you don't need to change barrels due to overheating on a battle rifle (especially one with a CHF barrel like the AUG), but the usefulness in the removable barrel is evident in the ease of cleaning the AUG, especially around the locking lugs and chamber, compared to DI systems like the AR platform. The removable barrel also makes the AUG easily mission configurable from the 14" entry to the 24"HBAR LMG barrel.
I guess if I was a homosexual I would enjoy this type of weapon design. Unfortunately for Steyr, I'm not. So I prefer REAL assault rifles that don't look like some kinda gay sex toy.
@NowKillYourself LOL your real assault rifle is probably an M4? that means when it overheats while fending off an Iranian human wave charge, and jams, you will be captured ,and from what history tells us about Persians, you will then be the gay sex toy.
i served my time at the austrian military ( austria = home of steyr arms ) and i liked the steyr aug very much. regardless of that i do not like the civil versions that much which i saw at the local gun stores.
i may look into buying an ar15 system simply because there are gazillions of additional items for customization for it on the market and the ar15 is not so often seen at shooting ranges in my country which is a total contrast to what u see in the US i assume.
Microtech Small Arms Research · Fletcher, North Carolina, manufacturer of AUG clone, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy/Reorganization in the State of North Caroline in July 2011. Now it cannot even be found on a typical internet search. I have a feeling that it might just be out of business. This is truly unfortunate to have happen to an American company!
I was always told with they any Steyr never double tap the mag cause you can force an extra round into the chamber and cause a stoppage i guess the at 28 was never taught that
@smithy8u It's actually not that weapon. It's one we build ourselves based on the Steyr design called the F88 Austyer. There are a few weapons out there better than the F88. But it's one of the better rifles in military service around the world.
sorry, but no. Steyr is an Austrian brand, but they produce the military weapons since a few years in Malaysia. Only hunting-riffles are made in Austria.
Styres are not a good weapon for SF...we use them in the Australian military as our standard firearm...they are a green army safety weapon, you can't adjust the butt stock and they are heavy for what they can do....the only real advantage of the bull-pup design in the shorter weapon length, as the barrell goes into the body of the gun..besides that, all our SF use M4 variants, HK's and Barretts.
and just to add to my previous comment, if you're wearing level 2 or 3 plates, a helmet and googles, using this weapon is a nightmare...especially for CQB style combat were you have to hold the weapon at the ready all the time..you end of having to fully stretch your non master hand just to reach the forgrip..its a pain the arse and makes it very difficult for smaller people and females. It also fatigues soldiers and makes them less accurate compared to ergonomically adjustable weapons.
@Seth1784 I have it on good authority that the 20"s are coming. Steyr USA has not given up on the AUG A3 or the idea of getting extra barrels on the market. Look for cold hammer forged US made 16" and 20" barrels soon.
@bcmarshall3285 Oh hell yes! ahhaha You have no idea how pleased that'd make me. I wont lie though I like being part of a exclusive group of a3 owners since Saber went under hahah. If they do start making them around here again, maybe the cost of parts kits will atleast go down.
@TheJarric i don't believe anyone has offered up one yet, however if there would be i'd guess it'd be a 50 to 75 round single drum style. i think there were some bullpup lmg's that were out a long while back that came with something like that. i'd imagine it'd be highly uncomfortable. with 42 round mags though you've got a pretty sizable stack of bullets already.
I own an AUG clone; it's a pretty good rifle. I'd prefer it over an AK47 or AK74. Would I prefer it over an AR15 or not? Maybe, it would depend on what I needed to do. I prefer AR ergonomics& the accuracy is a bit better because of that long stiff trigger pull the AUG has but if mobility in & out of confined spaces&low maintenance was an issue I'd go back to the AUG for its compactness. I don't regret buying it ( AUG clone ).
Can shoot with thick gloves on for the very cold places like Iraq in winter :-) and semi or auto shot just by the pull of the trigger. But the main problems are cant fire more the 90 rounds in 2 mins for over heating and the saftey can be set to fire if the weapon is slug on your back while having webbing on.. But this video is a joke with mag changes done it before and causes the rounds in the mag to move and likley to have stoppages plus takes your eyes away from the target as seen in the vid.
good point. I was more referring to the standard assault rifles. L85, Famas, Steyr, Tavor... and i´m pretty sure the chinese ones have the same problem... has to be pretty anoying in full auto, even If I never could "enjoy" that "hot massage"
@APedroSanchez Mate i used them for over then 9 years with the Australian Army, and is very easy for it to be converterted to left hand. see in the video the ejection port is on the right but you also see a cover on the left that can be pulled off and a new bolt change.. But the cocking handle is the only problem for the left hand shooters...
@PSadvance Yes but you need to have either a left handed or right hand bolt. (The ejector post on the face of the bolt determines the side the round is ejected). Post on right side of bolt = left ejected round etc...
LOL, looks like the USA wants to take credit for another thing again....but the STEYR STG 77 is made in AUSTRIA!!! like many special forces the USA adopted it.
@ghrnck The US is not "taking credit" for the rifle. This is just the version that is specially made for sale in the USA. The Steyr AUG in it's pure Austrian form was put on a list of rifles banned from importation in 1989. Steyr assembles the USA version with Austrian and US made parts here in America to be legal. Of course we want to be able to have them, they are great rifles.
@Bizarrnonsense It was listed by name as an "assault weapon" during a ban on imported firearms as part of an anti-crime law in 1988. Only one AUG was ever used in a violent crime in the US. This same ban stopped the import of HKs, Uzi, real AK, and other imported long gun semi autos. These long guns are now made from foreign parts and US recievers in the US to not be considered imported assault rifles. It was a silly law based on asthetics of guns, not real danger/crime.
@Bizarrnonsense US assault weapon ban will ban any import of any "assault weapon" into the US if it was made after a certain year. The AUG, was made after the ban went into effect.
@4everUSNavy The A3 is also made and was originally design in Austria. This is the american version of it (semi auto only, at least OTB), let's just say the A3 isn't an american exclusive.
To my understanding the latest version of the StG 77 is the AUG A3SF.
i used my issue steyr whilst on my deployment in somalia, in my numerous contacts it never let me down, only negative was it wasnt real good for butt stroking, you usually ended up smashing your elbow
i'm gonna throw this out there...reply if you agree/disagree. imo, the sabre defence aug a3 should replace the AR for law enforcement. as far as the millitary is concerned, pending a rugged reliability test, i'd trust my life to it. i know what you're all thinking...wow, the vid worked on this guy. tbh, it did indeed, the ease of use, the fast reload/barrel change, the light weight, the overall size and length of the system, and so on and so on make it a truly viable option, again, imo...
@sonhighguy -Agree. Most people with objections to AUG have no/limited experience with the AUG or are basing their opinions on hearsay, video games, or "I know a guy in the army who said..." I teach this rifle and make converts out of AR people every time. It takes an open mind and a willingness to expand your training. There are no more Sabre guns that will be built, but I have it on good authority from my friends at Steyr that the new A3 line (soon) will be even better.
@sonhighguy - Sabre Defence is no more. The owner of the company was arrested by federal agents for trying to traffic guns illegally to foreign governments. They filed bankruptcy. Steyr pulled their tooling and is seeking a new US partner/production facility to build parts for the AUG A3. Sabre was making barrels, recievers, and a few small parts for compliance. Steyr will continue to sell the new A3 once a new partnership is formed.
@JRhalo14 It's not a problem to shoot it on your support side. The technique is shown in the video. Because of the equal weight distribution it is easy to hold and shoot this way. Also, there is a bolt that can be used for full time left side ejection. It takes seconds to install.
@bcmarshall3285 o well my dad was taking me to the gun club and i dont think they have the conversion thing there but if they did that would have been my first choice
Imagine an AUG in 6.5mm Grendel with a quad stack magazine, 20" barrel, and a variable magnification sight. It could act as an assault rifle, squad automatic weapon, and sharpshouter's rifle, all in one!
@HONORGUARD308 Obviously, you have no idea what I am talking about. 5.56 isn’t good enough for a sharpshooter’s rifle. 6.5 offers greater range and stopping power. Quad stack magazines means twice the ammo capacity per magazine. So an AUG would carry 60 rds per magazine or more, becoming a better squad automatic weapon. This way every soldier would be able to performe the mission of rifleman, sharpshooter and machinegunner AT THE SAME TIME, and MORE EFFECTIVELY.
@sakpan39 Well if the Australian F88 was chambered in 6.5G then it would be exactly what your talking about, personaly ill rather 7.62X51mm or 7X46mm UIAC, you dont need a mag that can hold 60 rounds you just need a round that can kill 1 target with 1 shot. but i understand your view on this and agree with you.
@sakpan39 Check out the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge ! It can act as your sharpshooter high velocity heavy cartridge and also has the capability of sub-sonic (MP5-SD quiet) SMG type use. So you get a squad automatic, infantry/assault rifle, sharpshooter designated marksman, and a super stealthy entry SMG all in one. This all works with the 5.56 bolt and magazines. All the AUG would need is a barrel swap.
@bcmarshall3285 That is a very interesting cartridge you mentioned my friend. I am worried though about the range. Since it matches the ballistics of the 7.62x39mm AK it will not be accurate enough at long ranges. I think that it would make an excellent special forces cartridge, and it would be nice to add one or two 300 AAC AUGs per squad according to the tactical needs. Does anyone know how effective the russian 9mm subsonic round is? They claim 400m range!!
