  • I am being serious! Excellent content and quality video...

  • If you need an effective emotional self help tool that has help thousands get rid of emotional baggage and all sort of emotional problems, do a search on youtube for PSTEC emotional help tool, and it is the first video with over 7000 views:)

  • If you replaced "self-help" with "pharmaceutical drugs", you wouldn't know that he was talking about self help and it all makes the exact same sense. Only about 5% are actually helpful, and some are actually harmful.

  • "Dr. John Norcross, a clinical psychologist " not exactly a unbiased 3rd party. the people who go to these self help people are being given a spiritual solution to their problem not a bunch of drugs. these people are taking money out of his pocket and the pockets of the drug companys. these teaching are philosophy not science. a psychologist costs more than any self help program. "Also, the idea that you have a hidden hand in what you experience in life isn't a negative or a blame game." bias

  • ie the secret... it's such a load of crap.

  • "Every mental health professional..."(2:36) A mental health professional once advised a depressed friend of mine to have an extra-marital affair ! (no joke here) ..i can't see this being sound advice leading to peace of mind.

  • Love it!!

  • Yeah, I'm calling BS on this. The entire field of psychology is of questionable scientific value so what's his point supposed to be? These books are philosophy, not science.

Also, the idea that you have a hidden hand in what you experience in life isn't a negative or a blame game - that's a judgment on his part. The idea is that your subconscious has more power than conventional science says it does.

  • I strongly disagree with your comment. The field of psychology has made significant strides in the past few decades and there is scientific evidence to support this. Many interventions such as CBT can have considerable positive impacts on patients' lives. Your universal condemnation of psychology is unwarranted.

  • And many "self help" philosophies can have considerable positive impacts, while many "scientifically" backed practices have often done tremendous harm and been shown, scientifically, to have no statistical difference with a lack of treatment.

I didn't universally condemn psychology, I said it's of questionable scientific value, and it is - it's philosophy looking for scientific validation. This is a case of living in glass houses and throwing stones.

  • science as we know it today originally emerged as a 'natural philosophy'. every mode of thought requires a foundation of assumptions in order to have a framework within which to process information; science and philosophy are no different in this respect

  • True scientific branches of psychology include behaviorism, neurology (yes, psychology & biology overlap), and statistical methods, among others that I'm surely missing. Before pounding out a generalizing, erroneous comment, do these two things:

    (1) research

    (2) consider using more precise words. (e.g. perhaps you meant to say "Freudian psychoanalysis" when you said "psychology")

  • @pntmass All branches of psychology are scientific. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and human behavior.

  • @bigsuda The practice of psychoanalysis was not derived via the scientific method; it is mere hypothesis. It is widely regarded as a branch of psychology. In this one example, I have shown your statement to be false.

  • Love it!

  • 2 top selling genres

    romance and self-help

    both cater to women

  • So you are saying that only women need self-help? Please that is merely your opinion and does not reflect statistics or the human experience.

  • ah

    statistics

one of the things I can't seem to find

I think google has them in a security vault or something

if you know of a reliable location I can go to

I would appreciate you passing it on

there are many stats I would like to mull over

  • true enough.

  • ...

    sooo...

    where's that statistics site?

  • love this
