  • It's nice to hear the original version of this song. I was led to this because of the EHSS version. Reading the many comments which criticize EHSS saddens me. I think it's great that they put their energetic flare on this song. So what if they dance? If you can sing in praise, can't you dance or paint or sculpt or do any other artistic thing in praise? If it brings people closer to God, why not? I was led to Gospel Music by EHSS and I'm grateful for their ministry.

  • Remarkable video from tape~Agree that these guys set the standard HIGH for Gospel music & few entertainers or groups achieve the same level. Never tire of listening & enjoying this genre' of the good "olde-tyme" religion music.

Please pray for Bro. Harold Camping, age 89, President of Family Radio who suffered an apparent stroke (Fri.6/10/2011).He has been a diligent Bible teacher for 50+ years & although mortal & capable of human errors, he knows JESUS as LORD~! AMEN!

  • I Could not stop tapping my foot now my leg is all cramped i guess thes guys have that sort of effect

  • I love this :D

  • Every time I see them I feel like I am watching a broadway show

  • I keep watching this video just to see Jake Hess make those moves. Great!

  • Sig Sound needs to drop this song from their program and concentrate on SINGING and stay out if the "Fred Astaire Studio of Dance"! They would be much better off!! THIS is a STATESMEN song, pure and simple. I saw this same group sing it many times in concert in the 50s and NEVER saw the crowd remain in their seats and as many as 6 encores!! SUPER, super singers!! If you never saw them and heard them, you have no clue what I'm talking about. RIP, guys.

  • @hhsgophers Exactly! I absolutely LOVE southern gospel but it's becoming too much like a "show". Some songs are fun, but let's not forget the primary motive - worship.

  • Cool. I love it!

  • For those that question the Signature Sound dancing to this song, the only reason the Statesmen are not all over the stage is there are only two cameras. The cameras were to big to move like modern steady-cams can,

  • Can anyone please tell me the name of the DVD this clip is off of?

  • I have watched this video many, many times and I still can't understand how they make that "piano transition" without missing a note. lol

  • Love theses guys!!!! Gwen:)

  • Nobody did it better than the Statesman Quartet. Their musicianship was amazing. THey made it look easy. No one around today who can touch 'em.

  • It's amazing how old the video and recording is, yet it is instantly recognizable as pure genius. Such excellent performers. There is no reason what later generations of gospel singers can't be superb; they have great role models to study from.

  • I love this video

  • It's a better version when its a black spiritual.

  • An outstanding version of this great old gospel standard! Love it all from the beautiful harmonies to "the Chief's" bass tones, Jake Hess's powerful lead singing and, Hovie Lister's hot gospel piano playing (I play piano at my Holiness Church in Alabama, so I always pay attention to the piano player).

  • lol, Hovie Lister looks like Floyd Lawson from the andy griffith show.

  • Seeing Jake and Hovie in their prime shows where they set the bar for quartets that came later.

  • Honestly, I like this version better than Signature Sound, it's just simple, old time singing.

  • Jake Hess is GREAT

  • I grew up on some of these records. I always thought they looked like superstar gentlemen. just clean.

  • I LOVE these guys, especially Jake Hess, I am a fan of his, God bless him.

THANK YOU for sharing them with us, it is so nice to hear them again.

  • nothing against signiture sound, but they are trying to copy all the old time quartets. and it doesnt quite fit

  • they aren't coping it. they are redoing so that younger generations can enjoy this music but it's "cool" enough to listen to

  • Haha, they're rapping.

  • Very gooooooooooooooood!

  • i like this one better than EH&Signature sound...n i love Jake Hess

  • i like this version better than the one signiture sound does... ernie just cant duplicate the original

  • @skillingfretz There's a live version of Get Away Jordan from, I think the first, National Quartet Convention. Talk about high energy!

  • @skillingfretz kinda opposite for me but i did like the bass part at the beginning

  • Those boys really sing out. Thanks for posting this

  • What movie/video is this from?

  • Love this one!!!!!

  • Wow...the Dove Brothers tried but I think the Statesmen own this song!!

  • Look at them all happy !! :)

  • Denver did his most famouis solo [J have a Desire] while he was a member of the Rangers Quartet.

  • Jake Hess is awesome!

Just add a Statesmen song to my playlist for anyone that finds it so they can see Jake.

  • I was raised on gospel in church & Southern Gospel. Also doesn't hurt

that Bill Gaither wrote alot of those

great hymns alot of us grew up on.

Anyway, I first became familiar with

Hovie & the Statesmen after seeing

them on the Gaither homecoming &

the documentary Bill did on them, to

this day they set a stanard thats not

    been touched.

  • you can tell this is coming from their hearts.love! love! love! this is real singing!!!

  • Great stuff! Hey, would u happen to have "Oh my Lord what a Time?" That's probably my favorite Statesmen song. :)

  • This is a new music genre for me, and I just love it. Thanks for posting!

(They remind me of the Sons of the Pioneers. That's a compliment.)

  • Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

  • Good ending. Just good all the way through.

  • I prefer Denver over Rosie Rozell

  • I grew up on this music! I love this song. They get so into it! :O)

  • Hovie& jake are amezing WOW.........and Denever& Chief .......WOW( again)

  • Jejejej... Hovie and Jake... they are so happy =)

  • Havie Lister always looks like he is having so much fun at the piano.

  • LOL......Hovie reminds me of Floyd The Barber on the Andy Griffith show !!!!

  • I never thought of that til i saw you said that but now i can see it LOL

  • I have seen a video of this live, find that and watch it.its the best out of all the rest.

  • LOL the one and only Hovie! with Jake even then you knew him by the smile. lol I sure had trouble at first! any way so Ernie and SS took the moves from these guys! I hve to say SS bass may be small but he is as good as George Rex and JD (JD is in a class of his own) and the still with us Big John, lol still no one like rosie and james Blackwood. Dan Husky is an underated tenor of the old days though in my opinion. Thanks for posting

  • Denver Crumpler (the tenor here) could out sing anyone except maybe Rosie and Little Willie Wynn of the Oaks

  • My Guess is that if Denver hadn't passed away, Rosie might not have been as prominent as he was.

  • You have to remember; Denver wasnt originally part of the group; Cat Freeman (Vestal Goodmans brother) sang with them before Denver came along. Cat came back after Denver passed before Rosie. The Statesmen sound changed when Rosie came along.

Rosie and Denver are different style singers; Denver (to my knowledge) never sang any of the solo/lead parts; but Rosie did most notably on "Oh What a Savior"

  • @statesmenfan agreed

  • @statesmenfan Oh I agree that Rosie was able to become so popular because of Denver's untimely death, he brought a different sound to the Statesmen. There are very few tenors of that era; or any era for that matter; that have the vocal power of Denver Crumpler; the only one I can think of off the top of my head that might even come close to Denver is Cat Freeman who preceded and followed Denver as the Tenor for the Statesmen

  • This is awesome. I love the statesmen. Thanks for posting this.

  • Very very VERY good!!

  • OK, Ernie & Signature Sound. This is where you got your moves. Ha ha

  • @theladysings sorry there is no comparison,EHSS is into too much theatrics etc.,this is the way the song should be done, not dancing like some rock band.

  • Thank you Statesmenfan for posting this great video. I watch this video over and over again.Jake Hess makes me SMILE when he sings this song along with Hovie, Doy, Denver and Big Chief. I cannot help to want to see the next video that follows this song of them in the white suits. The Melody is so beautiful. Is there anyway you could post that video or tell me the name of the song? thanks!!!

  • I have videos uploaded of christian puppets from the 70s made for sunday school ministries by scripture press that perform statesmen songs my channel is hobiehippo- STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN for the lord- Hovie L.

  • statesmen are awsome. I met jake hess at one of his last concerts & had him sign the last record he sang on titled "Hovie Lister Sings With His Sensational Statesmen Quartet" (LPM-2790) & he asked me "Where in the world did you find this??" it was a record that my parents bought in the 60's at a performance in allentown & out of all the albums (florida boys, swaggart, jack van impe) that got lost over the years that one stayed guess it was s'posed to now its framed with photos of jake & me, wife

  • Simply put the Statesmen are OLD SCHOOL ! Imitated but NEVER duplicated ! AMEN !

  • If any group can touch the Statesmen (which they can't), it's the Dove Brothers. Ernie Hasse is not even in the ballpark.

  • Hovie Lister was the beginnging of the new quartets like Signature sound thank god for that man

  • Often imitated, but never duplicated - the "original" Hovie Lister and The Statesmen Quartet! When they performed this number on the Grand Ole Opry stage at the "all night gospel sings" they had to carry Hovie off the stage, he just couldn't stop!

  • Signature Sound's version can't hold the Statesmen's a candle.

  • signature is alittle better but thats my opion cause i'm younger

  • I agree with you SouthernGospelRocker. Signature Sound's version is to 'performancy' for me. This is real talent, they didn't need the big band, running around and drums, they did it all alone!!!

  • now that will bring someone to the altar! what a spiritual movement that song has on myself and many others

  • They sang He Will Pilot Me perfectly and with such great anointing.

  • What a young Jake Hess singing with handsome "Big Chief" and the others. I love these men

  • i totally disagree. whoever wrote this song may have had a similar experience, in their life. they tell their story in song here. i feel that this song is a testimony to Gods foreverness. He wont ever give you mre than you can handle and He will always give you a way out of your troubles

  • There is also a collection of four videos of the Styatesmen from the television program. I will get an address for them and post another commant when I find my videos they are packed away at the moment.

  • I cant get enough of this !!! does anybody know if RCA ever put out a CD collection of the Statesmen ? I think they did one on the Blackwood Brothers.......

  • I think they did. I have the cassette versions of both the Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers "RCA-Victor" hits, so I'm sure it was offered on CD. On the album it is a live version from the Wally Fowler All-Night Sing which at that time attracted bigger audiences than the Grand Ole Opry show that was earlier. My how times changed.

  • Hi Rebel ; you are sure right 'bout how how times have changed.........I'm not sure where this old country of ours is headed......This may sound strange but every now and then I stroll through the veterans cemetary and thank the departed soldiers.....and wonder what they might think about what this world has become...

  • Yes they did. I own two of the collection. I'm not quite sure but i think there is more in the collection than two. They are on Ebay. That is where i got minee. However they are decently expensive.

  • Eat your heart out Signature Sound.. haha

  • I never heard of the Signiture Sound...Looked them up on YOUTUBE and now I'M HOOKED !!!!...They really capture the feeling of the old southern gospel quartets !

  • The first time I saw this clip I watched it probably 20 times straight...one of the most incredible performances of this song. It is so tight and packed. I like the Ernie Hasse version but it pales in comparison!!

  • I watch this clip DAILY !!! I always walk away feeling great !

  • The short clip at the end of this video ( Statesmen in the white coats ) displays their wonderful harmony. Makes the hairs on my arm stand up. Anybody know the name of that song ?

  • It sounds like the beginning of " Lord I Wanna Go To Heaven". It would be great to watch/listen if somebody can post it!

  • Thanks Fire Pilot !

  • Thanks ZAGJAG !!!!

  • You can try Ernie Hasse and Signature Sound, and look up youtube songs by the Old Friends Quartet, though they are no longer around. Signature Sound does good tribute to these types of songs.

  • Are there any southern gospel groups today ? All I see is christian rock or christian metal bands or other off shutes.........

  • the comment I posted above yours was actually supposed to go here, sorry.

  • For those who don't know, the Statesmen were performing at Birmingham's Boutwell Auditorium and heard the Female Black group: Dorothy Love Coats and her backup singers doing the spiritual entitled: "Get Away Jordan." The Statesmen picked up on the song. The unfortunate thing is that Dorothy Love Coats wrote this song but never pursued a copyright so it went to Public Domain. Therefore, this number one hit never brought any financial prosperity her. But these guys were good!

  • This wasn't Dorothy Love Coates' song. This was a Ward Singer'song the Dorothy and the Original Gospel Harmonettes covered.

  • This was written by Dorothy Love Coates. They did an article in the Birmingham News on Dorothy Love Coates before she passed away and she explained the whole story behind writing the song. Sorry to disagree with you, but I know this to be a fact.

  • Technically its neither, its a negro spiritual. But the Clara Ward Singers did record it first back in the 1940s. THen Dorothy Love Coates and OGH did it with the extra part at the end "When My feet get cold.."..she wrote that part.

  • Today's quartets should watch this video....this is singing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The perfect SG quartet and the Statesmen at their best with Hovie, Jake, Doy, Big Chief and the great Denver Crumpler. Awesome!
