  • I bet those disgruntled motorists ride on the train everyday, hypocrits

  • Fabulous

  • Diesel Particle Filter would be not bad^^

  • Can someone tell me, is the rise and fall in revs the driver giving it throttle, or just the tick over?

  • @superbracey The old English Electric governors were prone to hunting when the engine was very cold. Something to do with the way they sensed oil pressure.

  • that is Bullshit!

  • SHIT THAT IS HELFIRE FANTASTIC!!!

  • As a dyed in the wool steam man, I would say that is clag to die for.

  • poor class 37 :(

  • how long does it take a class 37 to start?

  • didnt sound like it had been primes properly...

  • Clagg overload - fantastic! I remember these from being a little girl. I miss them a lot.

  • It´s a fog generator :)

  • @Laudrien

The Uk was a tropical island, until they came up with these fogmachines.

  • Talk about polution. MMMMM MMM YUM!

  • Al Gore would be pissed!!!!!!

  • could i ask but why does the engine rev then drop

  • @TheBrett59 cold oil leading to governor lag

  • @racingteddy oh ok

  • hahahaha many trees will die

  • Not only you're a good cameraman.you've also got good sense of humor.. :)) Thanks for the video!

  • now that's just pure porn right there!! =)

  • is that a british locomotive. i tink it's burning oil instead of diesel. is it a diesel electric or just diesel?

  • @iospisti The class37s are Brittish locomotives and runs off diesel.

  • is that a british locomotive. i tink it's burning oil instead of diesel

  • It's crazy what mankind has invented

  • TAKE THAT GREEN PEACE!

  • lol @ motorist!

  • amazing video!

  • love the smell of unburnt fuel "

  • you know its cold when the diesel's churning out more smoke than the steamer...

  • Sounds like a 'royal endfield' ;o)

  • Reminds me of starting a very cold GE locomotive back in the day before switching the mill. A GE doesn't even come close to having the character of a Class 37.

  • Sounds like popcorn. JIFFY POP anyone

  • You need to open that thing up down a stretch

  • Love the clag mate that must have been the week we had fog for three days !1

  • цветочки зелёные

    greetings from south ural Russia!

    20 feb 2011. -32!!!

  • Sounds like your camshaft is out of line

  • oh suck it up its deisel for god's sake you baby!

  • Hmmm...there's a glitch in the Matrix at 1:43

  • Nice vid.

Back in the day when these were in daily use, how long before actually pulling a train or any load, would these have to be started?

  • what are you coughing for? i would be bathing in it lol

  • *insert steam insulting a diesel joke here*

  • wht do they start so bad???

    old engines?

  • Napier engine???

  • Хуёвые у вас тепловозы

  • diesel power !!!!!!!!!!

  • GLOBAL WARMING

  • @SaintTony1968 It must be awful for a person like you, just one of the millions of government worshipping sheep that love to spoil things for others, go back to your vegan,self-hating,eco-friendly,enviroMENTALly,sandal worshipping, sustainable, recyclable, wind powered commune and leave the rest of us alone that have pride in our past and our engineering achievements.

  • @SaintTony1968

Fuck you! Go back to the EPA and go buy a solar powered "fuck" machine. To fuck your cunt with.

  • gawshhhhhh

  • How much power in bhp does that train produce

  • @zazzko5 about 1,700

  • why this is starting "by gusts" ??

  • Whats wrong with those motorist, i would have to stop and watch, and listin.

  • thats very dangerous for the train track and the train to be that close to the road. anybody could go on the track or mess with things inside the train. you need a tall fence

  • What a great vide, taken from some fantastic vantage points with great sount... The 14 'dislikers' can foxtrott oscar.

  • Fuck sake the 37240 Was making more smoke than that bloddy steam train

  • 37s are definitely the best of the British diesels. Up until my employers constructively dismissed me, I was going to be driving one of the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railways's 37s this November. Sadly I won't get my hands on the throttle of one now. Wish I'd visited the Llangollen when this beast has been running! Frankly a 12CSVT giving it the beans beats my puny 1.3 litre Fiesta!

  • I am in love.

  • Scrap a Deltic because it won't start on the first try on a cold day?

Are you Crazy Man? These Triangle shaped engines are like Hens teeth!

Heck Zontar's kids are trying to build one on my channel! :)

    Great vid! 5 Stars *****

  • @ChargerMiles007 Er, Deltic??? This is a class 37 with a V12 4-stroke engine, a Deltic's a class 55 with 2 engines in it; they're 2-strokes and each one has 18 cylinders, 36 pistons and 3 crankshafts. It makes a different noise!

  • @thomaspurbeck

Thanks for setting me straight there!

I know what a Deltic is, in fact I have made a vid or 2 mentioning the, and showing cutaway drawings.

So they are class 55s, I will remember that.

  • All I can think of saying is My Lordz! What a Clag Tastic beast :^) Very HELLFIRE!

  • Wont start 1st time!! just scrap the rusty old piece of junk..

  • lovely sound!!!

  • That is so good!

  • A big dirty diesel, there's nothing better. Steam trains are so boring in comparison.

  • How could anyone dislike this video?

  • @RPKGameVids Pollution or dellusion

  • the 37 is making more smoke than the black 5. lol

  • Vihtu mikä saaste kasa :P

  • That sounds so cool

  • Does this have a silencer or are they "straight" through ? Lovely sound of a big diesel btw !! ;)

  • @PumbaRuben There's some rudimentary silencing, but not much! Glad you enjoyed. If you want to hear real noise, have a look at my other vids of her at work on the Railway!

  • @tpickthall Lovely,wish i could smell it !!! :)

  • @PumbaRuben yeah, seconded. You can look down the exhaust stacks on these and see the turbine wheel of the turbo's! In my opinion thats the only silencing these get is the 2 turbo's!

  • public transport is good for the environmrnt....lol. liked and faved.

  • super dual team on the motorist!!!! lol 37 and black 5 what a tag team!!!!

  • did i see two toyota mr2s pass on the road?

  • awesum!!!!!!!

  • my lordz hellfire clag ... um ... you train fellas have some words ...

love that engine in my garage ....

  • Related to the smoke emission this Diesel locomotive was no progress compared to steam engines.

  • @aloisbembel Probably worse. The emissions from diesel fumes are more toxic!

  • Size of these piston are probably bigger than a human am I right? Probably a very hard time to change the rings, well probably harder than on a crf250 lol nice video .

  • @beluga420 Not quite but they are BIG - you need a crane to lift 'em out! Getting them disconnected from and then reattached to the crankshaft is the tough bit!

  • @beluga420 The bore is 10 inch if I remember correctly

  • I am so glad that people have to put catalytic converters on there lawn mowers in California so the Russians etc can run these smokin' bastards!!! Oh well, I love em anyway so I hope that Al Gore chokes on thes engines!!!

  • @Roaddogg4040 Too bad the cat's still don't stop greenhouse gases.

  • @Roaddogg4040 @Roaddogg4040 Lawn mower cats?! That's bonkers, particularly considering the amount of energy the US wastes in other areas. We're not in Russia btw, it's the UK. In Winter there's not much difference mind! Ta for the comments!

  • @tpickthall I was exaggerating about the cats on the lawn mowers but it is getting really close to that for real. They are starting to put cats on boats now! One ocean freighter puts out more pollution in a month than every pleasure boat in the world does in a year!!! Great planning on the EPA's part. How about cleaning up the freighters and leave us boaters alone?

    Steve

  • @tpickthall Yeah, he's not kidding - both my power washer and riding mower -had- one (removed, of course. Run much better without). They were integral with the mufflers, but no match for someone with a die grinder w/cut-off wheel and a welder. :)

Yet, there's still premix-burning two-strokes all over the place...

  • @tpickthall surely a cat on a lawnmower is going to use more emissions in production than it is ever going to absorb during it's working life?

  • @Roaddogg4040

    Idi@t !

There is now freedom for polluting air.

  • @freeclimb64 ?????? WTF

    Steve

  • fantastic! Like it.

  • can u explain the starting sequence? it has a electric starter or another smaller fuel combustion engine?

  • @autoboybv No, the loco is a diesel electric, so to start you actually apply battery current to the main generator which turns the power unit over to start it.

  • @tpickthall thank u

  • cameraman in distress! :P

  • this is far more worth watching than worrying about the ozone thingy!! :) Especially when the black 5 passed by!!

  • Man, that Class 37 made more smoke than the Black 5 did!

  • @SkywalkerTibor Riiiight. And nothing to do with the Carbon footprint of the developing World and the US then?

  • @SkywalkerTibor

    Hehe very funny

  • I live in Siberia, Here it is -45 Celsium degrees. It is impossible to start any engine like this here. Only with warm preparing.) But the video is excellent.

  • @Vladimir42kem Many thanks for the comments from all the way over there in Siberia! I can imagine that running engines in those kind of temperatures must be rather challenging!

  • @tpickthall 80% of cars, which stand more than 8-10 hours outside doesn't start at all! You have to call in car service center. They takes your car in warm place, because there id only one way to start your endgine))) What temprature is it there(on toyr video)?

  • It produces more smoke than a steam engine

  • She looked like she was loosing a lot of oil! I bet those piston rings are massive!

  • @strange6

    Unburned diesel mate.

High horsepower diesel engines always fire up like that from a cold start.

It's due to the cylinder temperature being inadequate to burn the massive amount of fuel being injected into the cylinder.

  • lol belongs on the scrap heap. Very bad for the environment!

  • haha! take that Ozone layer!!

  • I want one of those for christmas

  • wow! why wasnt it stored in an engine shed over night??

  • vvhat is that growling sound? starter motor or the engine itself?

  • 0:37 (Black 5) -Come on 240, Scrap your diesel engine and get a nice boiler instead. lol

  • 0:39 (37240) - no ta old Chum, I like thrash, not making tea! ; )

  • Great Video, I had to laugh when the camera man started to choke on the smoke. I guess there is a price to rail fanning at times.

  • why do trains run so weird it sounds like it runs then stalls runs then stalls

  • Looks like grandpa havin a bit of trouble wakin up there. Lol, that smoke must have had a delightful smell too : (

  • Your video made me laugh! Good stuff :-)

  • Gorgeous, what a fabulous machine. Takes me back to the Lickey incline.

  • love class 37s and this is fantastic footage - amazing engine sound with the bonus of the steam train passing by in the smoke! also with a sense of humour mixed in - well done!

  • 0:47 haha

  • this loco is not on the british railways it has sadly been withdrawn years ago and is now peserved and they smoke like that from cold starts they were built in the 60s the climate is changing naturally and all this co2 talk is to get more tax off everyone you can still drive cars without cats fitted mr arglwyddanfradwrus wihout being ordered off the road as you put it i hope the green party doesnt use any central heating or travel anywhere because this loco is causing zero climate change as to u

  • @40022laconia I think there are still quite a few of them employed with various freight hauliers.

  • please who can explain me, why the britan-diesel-engins after start-up are working frequently in load-idle-load-idle.??

    in germany it is unable.

    greetings from an engineer

  • Hi there,

37's generally tend to idle off balance like this, but I believe it's worse when they are first started due to the engine Governor hunting as the oil is cold.

Thanks for the comments. You've got some impressive locos over in Germany - and you still use them to pull proper trains with carriages. In Britain our railwyas are mostly run by units - or nasty plastic buses as we like to call them!

  • many thanks to you for the answer...in germany this way is complitely unknown.

    greetings

  • It is so that they do not stall (where engines stops) and to warm the engine ready for work.

  • many thanks for the answer

    regards

  • the man at the right is a very HARD GUY :-DDDD

  • it names fresh air in uk ?? :-DD

greetings from an engineer from berlin

  • I HOPE THAT RUMBLES AWAY CAUSING A LANDSLIDE onto greenpeace village.

  • nice.....good old british rail,,,,,,ha ha thanks...

  • Amazing.!Thanks to youtube...It wasn't possible to see the warming up of a diesel engine if this gentleman cannot post this video..!!I enjoyed seeing it and marvelled at the power of a locomotive engine...!!

  • haha Diesel burns cleaner then Unleaded. Most of what you see is unburnt Diesel and it returns to the ground as a solid.Unleaded fumes/gases dont they go up into the onzone. If everyone drove Diesel powered cars and trucks the world would be a cleaner place

  • @fpvshitsonhsv I doubt many people would agree there... but to be fair, who knows?!

It seems to me NOBODY really knows for certain! :-S

  • you do know that diesel particulates cause lung cancer and asthma , and is a contributing factor of the rising numbers of children with asthma .

i like big diesel locos as much as the next guy, but dont talk FUD

  • No it doesnt! Diesel does burn alot cleaner. Asthma isnnt "caused" by polution. I have Asthma and have had it all my life, you either have it or you dont. Some people have mild case when they are young and isnt noticed till later in there life. I know what asthma does becouse i have lived with it my whole life

  • Life causes lung cancer and asthma don't blame it on the train

  • what is that faint growl? is it the V12 or is it something else?

  • Particulates help reduce Global Warming.

So you see? He is helping to offset some of the heating caused by C02.

By the standard of today's environmentalist, this train could actually actually get money for helping to offset carbon output.

  • @jizzmonger LMAO!!!! Bizarre, but who knows, might well be true! :-S

  • I used to have a 1965 singer that started up like that

  • This disel power watch?v=LH6TgfseK_4&feature=related

  • or this Russian disel power watch?v=wEETEOcQW90&feature=related

  • Ha ha, lol.

  • Hellfire!! Shows us Brits we do make the best locos!!

  • diesel power! :-)

  • all gore just comited suiside lol

  • @05clenharth al gore would have thought it was a steam engine.

  • listen to that baby sing !!!!!!!!

  • this loco was ordered off the road a long time ago arglwyddanfrdwru your not being serious r u about emissions

  • @40022laconia I love trains, and would hate to see any train decommissioned

But the point I am making is that cars (vans, etc) are blamed for pollution no-end; a car smoking as bad as this would be ordered off the road and need repairs to be allowed back.

A train does not go on the road, of course... but the smoke is still dispersed into the atmosphere... just like with a car!

In other words, why blame cars so much when other forms of transport are just as guilty?

  • you have to have in mind that a locomotive is efficient in what it does. Sure, it emits CO2 in kilogram amounts while starting in the winter, but it can haul hundreds of tons of freight or hundreds of passengers. Cars outnumber locos by millions, and as a "ineffective" transport (let's say 9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers, usually spent for only one or two passengers) they pollute the most, next to jets.

  • Yes that's a very good point; emission per "weight" or "load" most probably makes it more efficient.

The main point I was trying to get over people only see smoke, and if a car smokes even just a little, the greens are in a tizz!

One point though, CO2 is invisible; the clag here is made up of other dirty particulates also, not just CO2.

FTR, I'm not entirely sure if smoke/clag (or even CO2, seeing we humans and animals expel it out!) is as much to blame as ' the experts' say!

  • I see your point.

The Class 37 was built in the sixties, AFAIK they don't have fuel heaters like never locos. Preheating the fuel helps a lot while trying to start the engine up, so it's uncommon to see this kind of clag on newer engines. I've seen the EMD GT22HW starting a couple of times, and there was no such clag like on this video, just a puff of white smoke and ignition :)

Clag is mostly unburnt hydrocarbons, CO2 and nitrous oxides, sulphur oxides...depends on fuel composition.

  • Very true, and I'm glad someone sees my point!

Don't get me wrong, trains are awesome pieces of machinery! I would love it if emissions/diesel clag from cars/lorries/ trains etc was found not to be as much to blame for climate change/pollution (or even if it was found not to be responsible at all!)

Mind you, maybe some years in the future from now, i'm sure they'll find some 'fault' with 'green-at-the-moment' cars/lorries/trains etc to blame for pollution!

  • Comment removed

  • surely they will, I already see some problems with the 'green-at-the-moment' vehicles :)

We still need to burn oil or coal to fuel them with electricity, hydrogen, what ever they run or will run on. Unless they will run on methanol or ethanol, but that's a different story.

And also, one of the major paradoxes in my book is that we use around 1.3 litres of diesel for one (1) litre of produced biodiesel!

  • Yes, very true. Many seem to forget that the alternative energy has been acquired using traditional fuels somewhere along the line!

I never knew that for bio-diesel!

  • There is a lot of mature science which has been silenced. mans total output of ALL greenhouses gases ie co2 methane and water vapour is 0.25% of the total the rest has always come from volcanoes animals and decaying plants. co2 is plant food and makes a GREENER world. Earth is actually cooling. this is a cyclic phenomenon caused by movement of the 4 gas giant planets affecting the magnetic field of the sun. did you ever read about people skating on the thames in the 1700s that was the last time

  • I guess people have never heard of the little ice age that lasted 400 years. Global warming is just a bunch of AL Gore crap. He is only out for the money. Total phony .

  • i wish someone would change my land rover defender piston rings for me.

  • i bet tht black five was thinking

    "effecient my ARSE"

  • aren't these trains like 50+ years old?

  • why do diesels smoke so much when they are cold?

  • Incomplete burn on the diesel fuel.

  • how did he move the train when he was still cranking it?

  • I suspect you all get quite amused by this sort of clagging but beware lads, posting this type of thing is just the ammunition the green party just might use against you.

  • I'm a train lover, but to be fair, that's a very good point you make.

I know there is some debate/question if car/diesel/petrol etc emissions are as much to blame as some claim by some (including myself I hasten to add!), but cars ARE blamed for pollution no end. Why are trains not under the spotlight too?

If a car smoked as much as this, it would be ordered off the road!

  • LOL :D its nprivate owned - the gren party can't do jack (:

  • @GreatTunesCo Cars are (mostly) privately owned too, but the green party want to clamp down hard on them. Being privately owned is somewhat irrelevant if they want to clamp down on the emissions!

  • Just thought I would point out that the 'Disgruntled Motorist' was the then Chairman of the Llangollen Railway driving past, giving a friendly wave !
