@superbracey The old English Electric governors were prone to hunting when the engine was very cold. Something to do with the way they sensed oil pressure.
Reminds me of starting a very cold GE locomotive back in the day before switching the mill. A GE doesn't even come close to having the character of a Class 37.

thats very dangerous for the train track and the train to be that close to the road. anybody could go on the track or mess with things inside the train. you need a tall fence
37s are definitely the best of the British diesels. Up until my employers constructively dismissed me, I was going to be driving one of the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railways's 37s this November. Sadly I won't get my hands on the throttle of one now. Wish I'd visited the Llangollen when this beast has been running! Frankly a 12CSVT giving it the beans beats my puny 1.3 litre Fiesta!
@ChargerMiles007 Er, Deltic??? This is a class 37 with a V12 4-stroke engine, a Deltic's a class 55 with 2 engines in it; they're 2-strokes and each one has 18 cylinders, 36 pistons and 3 crankshafts. It makes a different noise!
@PumbaRuben There's some rudimentary silencing, but not much! Glad you enjoyed. If you want to hear real noise, have a look at my other vids of her at work on the Railway!
@PumbaRuben yeah, seconded. You can look down the exhaust stacks on these and see the turbine wheel of the turbo's! In my opinion thats the only silencing these get is the 2 turbo's!
Size of these piston are probably bigger than a human am I right? Probably a very hard time to change the rings, well probably harder than on a crf250 lol nice video .
@beluga420 Not quite but they are BIG - you need a crane to lift 'em out! Getting them disconnected from and then reattached to the crankshaft is the tough bit!
I am so glad that people have to put catalytic converters on there lawn mowers in California so the Russians etc can run these smokin' bastards!!! Oh well, I love em anyway so I hope that Al Gore chokes on thes engines!!!
@Roaddogg4040@Roaddogg4040 Lawn mower cats?! That's bonkers, particularly considering the amount of energy the US wastes in other areas. We're not in Russia btw, it's the UK. In Winter there's not much difference mind! Ta for the comments!
@tpickthall I was exaggerating about the cats on the lawn mowers but it is getting really close to that for real. They are starting to put cats on boats now! One ocean freighter puts out more pollution in a month than every pleasure boat in the world does in a year!!! Great planning on the EPA's part. How about cleaning up the freighters and leave us boaters alone?
@tpickthall Yeah, he's not kidding - both my power washer and riding mower -had- one (removed, of course. Run much better without). They were integral with the mufflers, but no match for someone with a die grinder w/cut-off wheel and a welder. :)
Yet, there's still premix-burning two-strokes all over the place...
@autoboybv No, the loco is a diesel electric, so to start you actually apply battery current to the main generator which turns the power unit over to start it.
I live in Siberia, Here it is -45 Celsium degrees. It is impossible to start any engine like this here. Only with warm preparing.) But the video is excellent.
@Vladimir42kem Many thanks for the comments from all the way over there in Siberia! I can imagine that running engines in those kind of temperatures must be rather challenging!
@tpickthall 80% of cars, which stand more than 8-10 hours outside doesn't start at all! You have to call in car service center. They takes your car in warm place, because there id only one way to start your endgine))) What temprature is it there(on toyr video)?
love class 37s and this is fantastic footage - amazing engine sound with the bonus of the steam train passing by in the smoke! also with a sense of humour mixed in - well done!
this loco is not on the british railways it has sadly been withdrawn years ago and is now peserved and they smoke like that from cold starts they were built in the 60s the climate is changing naturally and all this co2 talk is to get more tax off everyone you can still drive cars without cats fitted mr arglwyddanfradwrus wihout being ordered off the road as you put it i hope the green party doesnt use any central heating or travel anywhere because this loco is causing zero climate change as to u
37's generally tend to idle off balance like this, but I believe it's worse when they are first started due to the engine Governor hunting as the oil is cold.
Thanks for the comments. You've got some impressive locos over in Germany - and you still use them to pull proper trains with carriages. In Britain our railwyas are mostly run by units - or nasty plastic buses as we like to call them!
Amazing.!Thanks to youtube...It wasn't possible to see the warming up of a diesel engine if this gentleman cannot post this video..!!I enjoyed seeing it and marvelled at the power of a locomotive engine...!!
haha Diesel burns cleaner then Unleaded. Most of what you see is unburnt Diesel and it returns to the ground as a solid.Unleaded fumes/gases dont they go up into the onzone. If everyone drove Diesel powered cars and trucks the world would be a cleaner place
No it doesnt! Diesel does burn alot cleaner. Asthma isnnt "caused" by polution. I have Asthma and have had it all my life, you either have it or you dont. Some people have mild case when they are young and isnt noticed till later in there life. I know what asthma does becouse i have lived with it my whole life
@40022laconia I love trains, and would hate to see any train decommissioned
But the point I am making is that cars (vans, etc) are blamed for pollution no-end; a car smoking as bad as this would be ordered off the road and need repairs to be allowed back.
A train does not go on the road, of course... but the smoke is still dispersed into the atmosphere... just like with a car!
In other words, why blame cars so much when other forms of transport are just as guilty?
you have to have in mind that a locomotive is efficient in what it does. Sure, it emits CO2 in kilogram amounts while starting in the winter, but it can haul hundreds of tons of freight or hundreds of passengers. Cars outnumber locos by millions, and as a "ineffective" transport (let's say 9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers, usually spent for only one or two passengers) they pollute the most, next to jets.
The Class 37 was built in the sixties, AFAIK they don't have fuel heaters like never locos. Preheating the fuel helps a lot while trying to start the engine up, so it's uncommon to see this kind of clag on newer engines. I've seen the EMD GT22HW starting a couple of times, and there was no such clag like on this video, just a puff of white smoke and ignition :)
Clag is mostly unburnt hydrocarbons, CO2 and nitrous oxides, sulphur oxides...depends on fuel composition.
Don't get me wrong, trains are awesome pieces of machinery! I would love it if emissions/diesel clag from cars/lorries/ trains etc was found not to be as much to blame for climate change/pollution (or even if it was found not to be responsible at all!)
Mind you, maybe some years in the future from now, i'm sure they'll find some 'fault' with 'green-at-the-moment' cars/lorries/trains etc to blame for pollution!
surely they will, I already see some problems with the 'green-at-the-moment' vehicles :)
We still need to burn oil or coal to fuel them with electricity, hydrogen, what ever they run or will run on. Unless they will run on methanol or ethanol, but that's a different story.
And also, one of the major paradoxes in my book is that we use around 1.3 litres of diesel for one (1) litre of produced biodiesel!
There is a lot of mature science which has been silenced. mans total output of ALL greenhouses gases ie co2 methane and water vapour is 0.25% of the total the rest has always come from volcanoes animals and decaying plants. co2 is plant food and makes a GREENER world. Earth is actually cooling. this is a cyclic phenomenon caused by movement of the 4 gas giant planets affecting the magnetic field of the sun. did you ever read about people skating on the thames in the 1700s that was the last time
I guess people have never heard of the little ice age that lasted 400 years. Global warming is just a bunch of AL Gore crap. He is only out for the money. Total phony .
I suspect you all get quite amused by this sort of clagging but beware lads, posting this type of thing is just the ammunition the green party just might use against you.
I'm a train lover, but to be fair, that's a very good point you make.
I know there is some debate/question if car/diesel/petrol etc emissions are as much to blame as some claim by some (including myself I hasten to add!), but cars ARE blamed for pollution no end. Why are trains not under the spotlight too?
If a car smoked as much as this, it would be ordered off the road!
@GreatTunesCo Cars are (mostly) privately owned too, but the green party want to clamp down hard on them. Being privately owned is somewhat irrelevant if they want to clamp down on the emissions!
I bet those disgruntled motorists ride on the train everyday, hypocrits

High horsepower diesel engines always fire up like that from a cold start.

40022laconia 2 years ago
@40022laconia I love trains, and would hate to see any train decommissioned
But the point I am making is that cars (vans, etc) are blamed for pollution no-end; a car smoking as bad as this would be ordered off the road and need repairs to be allowed back.
A train does not go on the road, of course... but the smoke is still dispersed into the atmosphere... just like with a car!
In other words, why blame cars so much when other forms of transport are just as guilty?
arglwyddanfradwrus 2 years ago
you have to have in mind that a locomotive is efficient in what it does.
Mirage2000H 2 years ago
Yes that's a very good point; emission per "weight" or "load" most probably makes it more efficient.
The main point I was trying to get over people only see smoke, and if a car smokes even just a little, the greens are in a tizz!
One point though, CO2 is invisible; the clag here is made up of other dirty particulates also, not just CO2.
FTR, I'm not entirely sure if smoke/clag (or even CO2, seeing we humans and animals expel it out!) is as much to blame as ' the experts' say!
arglwyddanfradwrus 2 years ago
I see your point.

Very true, and I'm glad someone sees my point!

Mirage2000H 2 years ago
Yes, very true. Many seem to forget that the alternative energy has been acquired using traditional fuels somewhere along the line!
I never knew that for bio-diesel!

I suspect you all get quite amused by this sort of clagging but beware lads, posting this type of thing is just the ammunition the green party just might use against you.
northstar1950 2 years ago
I'm a train lover, but to be fair, that's a very good point you make.
I know there is some debate/question if car/diesel/petrol etc emissions are as much to blame as some claim by some (including myself I hasten to add!), but cars ARE blamed for pollution no end. Why are trains not under the spotlight too?
If a car smoked as much as this, it would be ordered off the road!
arglwyddanfradwrus 2 years ago
LOL :D its nprivate owned - the gren party can't do jack (:
GreatTunesCo 2 years ago
@GreatTunesCo Cars are (mostly) privately owned too, but the green party want to clamp down hard on them. Being privately owned is somewhat irrelevant if they want to clamp down on the emissions!
