  • Effectively, the Bach lute work is impossible to play on the lute in its original score and it is always necessary to transcribe on another praticable key to be played on.

    Despite the fact that Bach owned Lutes and known well several lutenists as Weiss, it is nearly certain that Bach composed his "Lautenwerk" on a Lute-Harpsichord .

    Bach was a great keyboard player and could play as well Flute, Violin or Cello but we can conclude that he didn't know how to play on the Lute.

  • BWV998 was actually written for the lautenwerck (google it) and was written with standard keyboard notation. There was no evidence that Bach wrote with lute tablature.

    However, as you can already 'feel', this piece indeed feels 'simpler' than his other keyboard works. I think, that suggests that Bach actually did wanted it to be played by the lute too. See the broken-chords in the fugue, that is a lute character!

    I'm a guitarist, so I researched this too ;)

  • I can't pick a favorite of the Bach lute suites (whether he actually intended them for lute or not), but this one has a special place for me. The Fugue gives me a sweet picture of some angel delightedly working out an immensely complicated and intricate celestial Rubik's cube given him by the Lord and handing it back solved with a radiant smile and them both laughing for joy. I have heard a phenomenal recording or 2 of this on Baroque lute, by Jakob Lindberg on Bis and another by Moreno?

  • Great interpretation and phrasing. I like the allegro faster and I wish the mic placement picked up a little more bass frequencies, but I liked it. You should transcribe BWV 995 sounds great on the harpischord

  • Thanks! The transcription is an old existing one, by Bach himself (or a pupil?) Sound is better in my newer films.

  • This is fantastic, beautiful playing.

    I play the Prelude & Allegro on the piano, which is probably not optimal; the sound is not so clear as the harpsichord or guitar and it's always good to hear all of the notes when you play Bach. But still, it's great fun.

  • I like the bass drone/pedal note in the begining, how it unfolds with the melody....

    I have a folder of music I want to learn to play on the keyboard at some point and this is one of them..actually my aim is to be able to play some of the pieces of music I have always loved, the ones I know in my head already on the Clavichord(which I am making at some point,I have the plans and wood.......)

  • It's interesting (and much to Bach's credit) that a work initially written for lute can be transcribed for Harpsichord and lose none of its beauty. This must be evidence that Bach's work is universal. It transcends instruments and even up to our day, his music is regularly played in different ways. Even Jazz musicians manage to do something with him!

    No other composer has managed to make such universally loved, understood and recognisable music!
