@21stCenturyCat Well, the Battle of Hastings is thought to have taken place in Battle, not Hastings. Although the battle might not have been in Battle, but Crowhurst. Maybe the battle took place in Hastings after all & not Battle, or Crowhurst.
Beeching cut the railways and we look back fondly on these disused places. I know the place you mean. I walk it often and feel the Victorians got it right why should we mess with their engineering. So much effort and now sadly beaten by cuts...which of course is very much in the public eye right now again! On a lighter note dam that dude for telling everyone SenlacHill is not the place of 1066.. argghh lol!
@SenlacHarryHill I can see why you might be annoyed att the change of venue for the battle ;) Victorian engineering is a wonder & continues to be so. I'm not sure where we'd be without it.
I have seen quite a bit of development for the sake of development, and some of it is justified, but not all. Very often there are politics involved, and there are also make-work construction projects that keep construction crews working but create hideous public works monstrosities that don't serve the public any better than what was there before... Such is progress.
@phekwig I know what you mean. Sometimes development is done for all the wrong reasons & politics sure does play a part. That's partly the case with this proposed road.

Interesting speculation. I had a history professor who said "it's not what happened that's important. It's what people THINK happened that's important". So much of what people believe either never occurred or at least not in the way we've learned.
@theloathlydaddy I guess the trouble with history, especially older history, is that we often don't know exactly what happened do we? The Battle of Hastings is a good case in point. It happened so long ago all we are really sure about is the outcome :)
I remember a few years ago they wanted to put a road through one of the best sites for trilobite fossils in Pennsylvania-they decided not to worry about the fossils and just dumped a few tons of rubble off to the side for people to pick through instead.
@americannamor From what others have said, that seems to be all too common over there. Thankfully things are better here, but there are exceptions to every rule :)
At least you could drive to the site much easier ;)
I wish we could halt the wheels of progress at this point when it comes to transport networks. I understand the want for these things, but I just wish we could leave it all be and make do with the roads we have. Let's look at reducing the amount of traffic on them, rather than build more roads to allow for more traffic.
The countryside is a beautiful thing, that area looks amazing btw, and I hate seeing more of it destroyed for these things.
@miyacemu As Joni Mitchell said, "They paved paradise & put up a parking lot". She also said, in the same song, "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone". Wise words indeed.
It is a nice area & i really should go back there more often. I used to love running there during the summer months.
but are you absolutely sure the battle took place in Hastings?...

History is vitally important. Unless it mucks up our development plans. Yeah, that's right.

@kenrg We wouldn't want history to get in the way of progress now would we? :)

If there were a movie about your life the lead actor would be Michael Caine.
In the US there'd be very little thought put into making "improvements" on historic land. It'd done all the time.

@NotChristopherMast Michael Caine eh? Let's hope he hangs around for a while, just in case ;)
I've heard many people say about how history just isn't valued over there. Trouble is, once it's gone, it's gone forever.
