  • Much respect to the Gracie family as a whole, and to Rener and Ryron Gracie in particular.

After watching this, I am not sure I like the idea that you should just not do anything when under a tight sidemount.

The bad guy's face is so lose to yours in that position. What is to stop him from biting you while you wait for your chance to escape? And what is the Jiu Jitsu response to such biting?

I am really curious about the answers to these questions...

  • @HughSlaman if someone tries to bite you then they probably dont know what they are doing, if they bite you, break something of theirs, or put them to sleep then break something of theirs, when you train gjj you are trained to terribly mame people, it can be an injury they carry for the rest of their life, they wont bite you after that

  • "You don't escape when you wanna escape, you escape when you can" priceless!

  • Absolutely sick technique! Lol by the time the guy on top is like "YES SIDE CONTROL!" the guy on the bottom is like "Yeah... Don't think so..." Lol. Say what you want about Ryron, Rener and Rorion's personal skills in the realm of MMA ect. ect., but they are indeed the best Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructors to date and just awesome people.

  • Great lineage, great teaching. Definitely keeping it real.

  • sick

  • wow, only on youtube can u click on a GJJ instructional video, and glance down to see a heated discussion about Pearl Harbor, Hitler, or Colon cancer. what the hell is wrong with u people.....

  • @TheWoodmite LOL! So true. Completely irrelevant, comple non-sense, the youtube community: Just like one big family!

  • no one ever talks about this point. not only did they attack pearl harbor but they were killing nearly a million chinese at the time, not to mention many other things. it was called an asian holocaust. There leaders were nuts. you are defending the big bully in the playground for getting detention after school for bashing a kids teeth in. my grandfather died in a POW camp there and they were abused. anyone backing them should be ashamed. I hear hitler had friends too.

  • nice...thanks for the vid boys

  • BJJ is fantastic. The only thing it neglects is defense against multiple attackers, which Krav Maga is probably the best for. Extremely effective, however.

  • I think the text book response to that is there is no martial art that will protect you against multiple attackers. Think of it like this. I have never seen Krav Maga, but say a Krav Maga guy runs up against 2 BJJ guys. Would the BJJ guys be better off fighting him one on one since Krav Maga is better against multiple opponents? I don't think so. I could be wrong here, but if a martial art can beat you one on one, I can't imagine how it would lose if you had superior numbers.

  • I hear you, comrade. All I'm saying is that grappling by its nature is a one-on-one endeavor. In everything you do in Krav, you are taught to be aware of the possibility of weapons and multiple attackers. We train for that. Does it actually work? I don't know. I know that I have practiced thousands of times, but it's difficult to say. I do think a Krav practitioner would have a better chance of surviving a knife attack or pulling off a successful gun disarm. Nothing is perfect or invulnerable.

  • Yeah, I hear what you're saying. If a guy had a gun or something, I definitely wouldn't try much on him but running. haha Nothing like bringing an arm bar to a gun fight. I also definitely wouldn't go to the ground with a guy if he had buddies around. It would be dirty fighting big time. heh I'll have to google Krav Maga and see what it's about. Sounds pretty cool. Take it easy. =)

  • Oh, wow, I just googled Krav Maga. The official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Force. Okay, you win. haha Those guys are just bad men. I didn't know it was taught any where. Yeah, that would definitely be a heck of a stand up martial art to go with BJJ.

  • If krav practitioners go to the ground, we practice getting up because we are anticipating a buddy kicking us in the head. Also, if someone attacks you with a pipe or stick, Krav has a pretty nifty defense. We have gone really HARD on that defense and it does work. Techniques break down under stress, so I have no idea if I could pull it off in a real situation. Again, with one attacker, a BJJ takedown, mount, and pound would work really nicely. In fact, I am going to do a Machado seminar soon.

  • I've researched Krav Maga and asked around a lot about it at the gym and stuff. I'm sold. Not sure it would work, but it would definitely be good to have just to give you a chance in bad situations. It would give me a better chance than going "Dang, you've got a pointy object, what do I do, now?" haha There are no gyms around here that teach it, but I'm gonna see what I can work out. Thanks for turning me on to this. =) And Machado is a bad dude. heh

  • Good luck! Yes, it's hard to find "reall" Krav instructors who have actually gone to the L.A. HQ and passed the ridiculously tough black belt instructor-level test. We have one in my town, but that's unusual. KM is definitely better than just saying "Dang." We do train to run away. If you block that initial knife attack, disable your opponent, and do not have a family to protect, you should run. We do the defense, then practice running to the door. Sounds cowardly, but it actually makes sense.

  • Krav maga has nothing to do with Martial arts cos in martial arts there no place for guns and Krav maga is military system developed to kill unarmed childeren throwing stones. Yes its effective when a peloton of heavely armed soldiers breaking entrance of houses. Only a fool would promot Krav maga, cos it doesnt make you a warrior but an oppressor

  • I've been doing it for 3 yrs and we have not gotten to the lesson on killing unarmed children. In fact, it's nowhere in the instructor's curriculum book, so it must be something they teach in secret. As an instructor, I have also never taught the "killing innocent children" technique, but I look forward to the secret ceremony. It could come in handy if I need to kill an innocent child. But seriously, KM has been adapted for the civilian pop, but I suspect you know that and are just out trolling.

  • You dont have to be that smart to understand my drift , just watch CNN and see the army of Tsahel and what there doing . Krav Maga is an Israeli (Military)aggression system.

  • You actually said in your previous nonsensical posting that "Krav is a military system" and has nothing to do with martial arts and "no place for guns." The word "Martial" originates from "Mars," the god of war. Martial Arts is specifically defined as combat training and weapons are a huge part of combat. The Japanese helped invent Karate, but we don't criticize the system simply because we fought WW II. Your political differences with Israel are irrelevant to the effectiveness of the system.

  • yeah yeah !! pitbull , men are from mars and bitches are from Venus , any way Krav Maga is used by the Israeli , 10 heavy soldiers killing childeren throwing a stone, thats a fact ,you cant change. it has nothing to do with my political or religion conviction, its just my nature. im a humbel guy , is my attitude a

  • You are so ill informed that you don't even know the origin of the word "martial." If you don't blow yourself up first, go get an education on basic word roots, then come back and attempt to write a coherent sentence.

  • You moron!!! i speak 5 languages !! i dont blow up myself ,first i'll cut off your empty head with my katana ! :P and show me what your Krav maga can do ,of corse you will come with sophesticated armed empty headed marines ! No wonder, sinds the Atomic bomb on Japan , you Rombo's strated a war that you dont win . Corea, Vietnam,Somalia,Irak,Afghanistan.. arrogant MORONS .

  • I dont give a fuck whether you speak 10 languages, Osama. I'm not surprised that you threaten to cut off my head. I am an innocent citizen, and that is what your kind does to innocent citizens. Threatening and killing innocent citizens is a way of life for you and your kind. But if you come at me with a Katana, I'll blow your fucking head off. That's called self defense, something you would not know about because you are well schooled in killing the innocent. Do us a favor and blow yourself up.

  • Innocent like Hiroshima , Nagazaki, vietnam, guatanamo ..... , listen you stupid fuck , you so ignorant, that i aint gone talk to you no more! so go fuck your silicone mama .

  • You are the one that started this thing, Osama, with your idiotic misunderstanding of martial arts. You decided to troll and you got owned. You brought in the middle east conflict, which has nothing to do with the civilian system of Krav in the United States. So go strap on the bomb, step into a cafe, and pull the damn string. That's what amounts to middle eastern martial arts. I'll end this fruitless correspondence with a phrase that you, more than anyone will understand -- Ka BOOOOMMMM.

  • Get nothing to do with middel east you moron , i'm a Moorish, im just under Spain! if you were beside me ill break your redneck with a with an OBI GURUMA sutemi ... that stupid hollywood culture gets you nowhere, now i've met a lot off people, i confirm that Americains are the most idiot on the planete. yeah Elvis is a life , stupid fuck

  • Doc hollyday, Waytt Earp, jessy James, with such ancestors you cant possibly understand the concept of martial arts or concept of living, you people live like zombies , working 14 hours a day and in week-ends for what? that your bitches get there silicones or driving SUV.? No wonder you get depressed, you kill people in campus or in office! you cold blooded rampage killers ! psycho idiots!

  • ... Yo stupid pitbull !! I rest my case

  • You are the troll that started, so we'll keep going. You did not even realize that the root of "martial" means war. You also did not realize that in martial arts, you use weapons. Credibility = Zero. You could break my neck in your dreams, which happens to be as black as night. My ancestors were slaves, Pedro. By the way, Wyatt Earp was a respected sheriff, you dumbshit. And yes, you can judge all Americans by my postings. Makes perfect sense. I'll judge all terrorist Moors by your idiotic rants

  • Funny coz you talk like a red neck !! i didnt strat nothing, i did make a statement , Krav Maga is an Israeli military system and that s a fact and evrey thing from Isarel directly or indirectly is for military purpuses....

  • By saying Krav is for "killing innocent children," that is "starting something." You are saying that anyone who practices Krav is interested in killing innocents, which I think even you would admit is ridiculous. The system is effective for civilian self defense. Military and martial are connected, like it or not. All martial arts can be used for good or evil. I don't judge my fellow Americans because they brought slaves from Africa. But don't call people baby killers, because that is trolling.

  • In japenese martial arts" Bujutsu" they have another concept (Honor) than in Krav, i see you play guitar , did you know that the Moorish spain did introduce that ? thats what we call Andalusia. oh yaeh listen from Masonic george Washington to twoo Bushes , passing by Nixon and Clinton, they all were Pathological liars, terrorisme is one of there many lies. be good !

  • hey hey hey clinton all he lied about was getting some head what man hasnt lied about that ?

  • aint gone talk? dude ok im against the ignorance but hate to say it what would call pearl harbor then?

Vietnam man im in the air force let me explain something vietnam was fucked guantanmo bay ill flat out say its about damn time they dont play with honor i dont think we should.hiroshima and nagazaki ill put it this way they shouldnt have hit us at pearl harbor

  • It was a war and Purl Harbor was a military base.Hiroshima and Nagazaki was a civilian city ! you can twist it as you like but it was a crime against the planet and all in it ! Eversince USA has won no war. by the way , they should abolish air strikes!

  • we werent involved actively in the war up until the point where they hit us.

  • irag and afghan has done both of those things as well as pakistan western europe spain as well killed innocents every damn culture thruougout time.

  • dude its platoon.Heavily is good too.

And how krav maga is promoted in the us is as a self defense reality based system which i think even you could agree is correct

  • and yor face was wide open for 3 seconds and your preventing whileon your back not impressed. Now a days that means you loose.

  • To all judokas: Go and watch other videos!!!!! We want to learn something here and you go bragging about your art...this is an instructional and not a debate forum. Every art evolves. Dont tell me you dont know that judo came and from japanese jujutsu... Just let the people who want to learn watch and read to comments that would help us in knowing more about the technique and not just quarreling about history...

  • All BJJ nut huggers UNITE!!!!!!!!!

  • Well here is how I fight, bitting and more bitting, if that don't out comes the Glock 21 if that fails a Mega AR 15 loaded with 75gr TAP will do the trick. lol, No seriously there are Gracie fighters that are tough I just don't see them in the UFC like Rickson 400-0 lol

  • The Gracies may not be in the UFC anymore, they're too busy making real money teaching the best UFC fighters. If there'sone thing that has made the UFC Gracie proof, it's the use of Gracie techniques, even if they lose as individuals the techniques still win, case in point, Hughes Vs. Royce.

  • You really think the Gracies invented the art of MMA lol it was first documented in 648 BC in the Greek Olympics. All they did is teach what they learned from Mitsuyo Maeda.

  • When did I say they invented MMA? I don't see that in the post, nor do I see an implication fo that. And NO MMA was NOT invented by the Greeks the Greeks participated in pankration , while they did strike and grapple it was NOT what we know to be mixed martial arts, it was a unilateral art in itself. The Gracies participated in Vale Tudo which had been around before them in Brazil and Asian countries did similar events, but the Gracies DID REVOLUTIONIZE MMA as we know it.

  • The Greeks would eat the Gracies alive

  • So I crushed your stupid argument and you go straight to an unsubstantiated conclusion. The Greeks might well kill the Gracies, they were trained in Pankration in order to fight in combat. Put into a situation of JUST grappling I feel the modern improvements in BJJ would put the Gracies over the top.

  • indeed; hats off to them for mass-marketing Japanese jujutsu newaza and no doubt putting their own spin on some of it.

  • Look at Maeda's Judo and BJJ and tell me you DON'T see a difference. THere are CLEAR similarities and the GRcies have never denied the origins of their art but they have said, and correctly so, that they have changed it in key ways. If BJJ and Judo are the same why is it that Judo brown belts at my school lose to blue belts and purple belts and even white belts at times? If it's the same that wouldn't happen so offen.

  • huh? search kosen judo. hirata judo. kimura judo. kashiwazaki judo.

there is no "b"jj. Only gjj but you cannot use gjj for trademark reasons. gjj is 95% a training and tactical emphasis on newaza. the waza (technique) is essentially the same.

  • Not essentially but similiar stuff; headlock escapes is not tought in judo, armbar from the mount, they prefer the pin, twisting arm control is not tought in judo, closed guard, nor is how to avoid getting hit. the gracies are talking about self defence jiujitsu, not sport judo or kosen judo because both of these were the same for sport just like regular bjj is now a days, sport jiujitsu with no basis for self defence

  • 95-98% judo. that is the core curriculum.

    maeda was a kodokan judoka.

"olympic judo" does not equate to of judo waza.

closed guard? Do Osae. some self defense. some method. some innovation as any teacher of any art would have but ... its not a new art as claimed.

agree they are very skilled at fighting judo and should be commended for popularizing judo newaza.

google and read JUDO HISTORY by M. Tripp

  • if you are carrying a gun and have the distance to shoot then you don't need jiu-jitsu! but what happens if you get taken down and are getting your face beat in? are you going to bite the guy's fist as its coming into your mouth?

  • Or even worse, what if someone gets close to you and takes away your gun. It's easy for him to do if he's bigger and stronger than you.

  • lost in space can focus on whatever he wants but the bottom line is that if you watch the ufc or the mundials or the pan ams or adcc what are 99% of the matches won with? basics that you learn in your first year of training

  • "and if they're holding really tight, don't do anything. you dont escape when you want to you escape when you can"

I disagree with that one. For one, there is a technique to create space to escape even if they have a firm cross face side mount hold, and more importantly, what if they are holding you down waiting for their homies to get to you to kick your face in? You can't lay there and let ANYONE hold you down like that in the real world.

  • wow they always show some beginner ass bull shit.

  • Yes, basics like the triangle, the arm bar, etc. Learn all the "advanced" techniques you want, but BJJ is about doing the basics and, winning with the basics.

  • Well I started in 94 and have been teaching for 6 years now. So you stop thinking you know it all. I was at the gracie academy for 4 years all they do is take your money. They teach sport low level moves. Anyways I don't have time to play internet tough guy.

  • Why dont you challenge one of the Gracies????? I bet that will shut your ass up.

  • Fight a Gracie lol like Mat Hughes did?

  • you aren't matt hughes :\

  • No I am not but to say that I am someone that they can just roll over is false, fighting and sport jiujitsu are two different worlds

  • Matt Hughes CLEARLY used Gracie Jiujitsu to win that fight. Arm bars, ground control, he was just better that night at the BJJ. As Helio Gracie wrote, "Royc lost but jiujitsu won".

  • all in Judo as well (from kobudo jujutsu ryuha). sankakujime .... uh, gee that means triangle choke. oh you mean this wasnt all invented in Brasil?

  • THis one response will address all 3 of your posts.

The Gracies have never denied that their art comes from japan, they just point out, and rightly so, that they have emphasized ground fighting and their techniques and movements are unique to ground fighting. THat's all, if Judo is so great, then why is it that few UFC guys use Judo? And if they do they ALSO supplement that with BJJ? They're different, perhaps not VERY different, but different.

  • Bro stop responding to these guys. It's fruitless. The joke is on them because they don't understand we all respect Judo, we all understand the history. But until you get some Judo players winning regularly at Abu Dhabi then just shut the hell up. In the meantime they will all be at home trying bjj moves on their brothers on a 4x4 swain mat.

  • awesome post, awesome point, EVERY overall ADCC winner has had extensive training in BJJ. NICE!

  • in my opinion, judo and bjj are both one persons take on a style to make it their own, judo was kano, bjj was gracie. they are both as valid as each other. but i disagree that anything is a certain styles move, u said trying bjj moves at home. its the approach to applying these moves that differs, as they both have diff ideas on what a win is. I do plain old ju jitsu and i feel both are far too concerned with a single dimension, but thts just cuz i hav diff priorities than full grapplers

  • the reason is they have popularized judo newaza. there are some good newaza teachers in the US. most are in Japan and most people won't go there to train and don't speak Japanese.

shinjukool is right. it's judo newaza done well.

  • @RightWingCon81 why must everyone discuss these arts as valid only if used in the UFC. number one there are other companies than the ufc in the mma world. and number two, all of these arts are for defending your life in a street fight situation. they're not teaching these people taking their classes to become mma fighters

  • @disturbed157 hwne I used the term UFC I used it as an umbrella term for all MMA. You knew that, you just want to knit pick. Second, I love Judo, I do judo, but it is different from GJJ/BJJ which was my point. And MMA is a good place to look when seeing if a style will work or not, why? Because it is a public forum with few rules. I have no real evidence that kung fu works in a real fight, there are no collections of it doing so.

  • @RightWingCon81 See this is where the current ginorance toward martial arts is generated, people like you that honestly believe it is the martial art that creates an incredible warrior and not the persons' dedication to their art. Judo could be very effective in street fights, for two reasons, concrete is a crap lot more painful to take an nose dive on that a cage floor and the average person is not an MMA professional that spends 95% of their life training.

  • @ValkyereHowie I practice Judo myself, I think it's great, but it is a sport and those who practice it probably couldn't through a guy who is punching them in the face. GJJ, not BJJ is designed to stop people in a REAL fight.

  • @RightWingCon81 Judo is also a sport but it was/is primarily self-defense, Jigoro Kano created Judo for the same reason Helio Gracie created BJJ, to give a small/frail opponent the ability to overcome someone whom is physically much more powerful than them, only Kano focused on throws, throws that required as little physical strength as possible. I don't practice Judo I just feel no art should be disrespected and they all have something incredible to offer.

  • @R EVERY ART; Judo, GJJ, Aikido, Kung Fu, Karate, Kick Boxing, Wrestling, Ninjutsu, JJJ, Taekwondo, Nogi ect. has it's own specialities and it's own strengths and weaknesses. It all comes down to the practitioner. And really at the end of the day, I would say the safest people are those whom practice at least two arts that compliment each other, a striking art and a grappling art. Stand up and ground game, if MMA has proved anything it is that all aspects of self-defense/fighting are important!

  • @ValkyereHowie Didn't you just say MMA is a poor proving ground because you have pros who practice all day? THat's just GINORANCE MAN, plain old GINORANCE! I don't know what ginorance is, but it's your word so I'm going with it.

  • @RightWingCon81 No I did not say that, I said the effects of each technique would be much more powerful on an average person like a street thug that would actually try to attack you because they are not trained and they are not in MMA shape, an MMA fighter can take a throw like that but just some random agressive dude on the street sure as hell can't. Lol really? Nit picking grammatical errors? Only someone with no points or no valid points has to resort to nit picking at grammatical errors.

  • @ValkyereHowie How many fights have you been in? I know in REAL fights I've been in, I feel little to no pain because of adrenaline. I'm not special, I'm not super human, I'm normal, most people can take a lot of abuse in a "life or death" fight. That's why Helio promoted chokes to armlocks, because a guy can still fight with a broken arm, but no one can fight after being knocked out with a choke.

  • @RightWingCon81 None yet, I'd like to do some amateur MMA in the future, obviously hope I never have to be in a fight for my life scenario lol. All I'm saying is a major concussion (knock out) can definitely be inflicted from a hard throw, especially if they don't know ukemi/break falls. Any and all arts can cause a major concussion or contain submissions such as chokes that can end a fight. Armlock; with only one functional arm, the fight is basically over.

  • Why dont you challenge one of the Gracies????? I bet that will shut your ass up.

  • that is why I always imagine my opponent is hilary clinton naked

  • Hey said sperm, not vomit.

  • cool video i like to armbar from this position. great teaching!!!!

  • Good basic escape, but watch out for the brabo while shrimping

  • Awesome instruction as usual.

Doesn't get any better than this, thanks.

  • You guys rule .Keep it up!!! What you do is appreciated. Thanks

  • Excellent video instruction. A great image/perspective with good audio. Great detail. Youtube's best imho.

  • i'm really glad you mentioned "and if they're holding really tight, don't do anything. you dont escape when you want to you escape when you can" thats a nuggett right there

  • Used to pass by several academies in LA to get to these guys. The best instruction anywhere. Can't get confortable with any other style of teaching. Just dosn't mach up. Will be back one day.... Falo

  • I like

  • Ryron looks like he's been pumping alot of iron. Rener you look more toned than ever. I'm guessing your getting ready to fight in a light or whelter (sorry misspelled) weight class? Or along that range? Tell me when you guys have your first NHB fight, and I'll try to show up. It's been a while since I've been to the academy.

  • lyrical, I'm not sure you understand how big these guys are. They look very light and nimble, but are each about 6'4" and over 200lbs.

  • I think I would kinda know. Rener trained me in BJJ 2 and 1/2 years back. I use to go to the old Gracie academy in Torrance before they moved to Artesia right next to Onami (seafood restaurant buffet place). And I remember seeing Ryron a couple of tiems in the academy while I attended so yeah.

  • Yo I'd like to see Ryron and Rener fight some light heavyweights with no time-limit, no stand-up cause I think they'd do good.

  • I train with Megaton Dias in Phx. Excellent technique! Will practice this at the next class.

  • That was wonderful. If you guys could cover how to defend the kimura attack once the opponent is already sidemounted, that would be great. Thanks

  • another gracie technique of the month. valuable as always please keep it up
