If you get super glue/varnish/head cement in the eye of the hook, just clear it (before it dries) using a dubbing needle, pin or scrap bit of fine wire. Some like to pass a fine hackle through the eye, which will soak up any excess varnish etc..
Excellant pattern for grayling i have been have real success with this pattern without the tail and with the tail on my local river also had a few nice brown trout on this too.
Hi David, I'm a beginner in tying. I really enjoy your explanations, tips and showing closeups of not only the material being used but the step by step method. I have a number of your lessons saved within my YouTube play list. Thanks and keep making those lessons.
I started tying about 3 months ago. I have bought 3 or 4 books on tying fly's. I have found that your tying lessons for beginners videos have been more helpful than any book I've read.
I think this will be helpful to me as a beginner. Once I learn how, though; I will be tying different flies, suited for Oklahoma fish and waters. Cheers-
when you said 'keep me posted', here we go! i made this fly with dog hair instead of dubbing material, and caught 2 trout over 4lb! youre the best mate!
There are 2 types of Velcro, really heavy (lots of points in it) and lighter stuff which doesn't have as many points in it.
The more points in it, the more it's going to pull on the dubbing.
Anyway. You use glue or some kind of double sided tape to attach the Velcro to the Popsicle stick. Just cut it into little squares, pull apart the two sides of Velcro and glue it down so it looks like the one he has in the video.
watched the first 3 vids, they are great please keep them comming. I use to tye flies at school about 6-8 years ago, and had completely forgot the tricks. but these are great, could i request the gray duster and the may fly with wings and extended body as i use to get great sucsess with these two.
Dave - just started tying my own flies about a year ago. I've found your instructions to be extremely helpful and I appreciate your insight. Thanks for the videos. Please keep making more!
ive been tying for about a year and the video that came with the kit dindnt explaine every thing corectly. but from watching your vids ive learnd a lot more in the past week than a year with the vid
i have a question i started like 1 year ago and i cant figure theses things out i mean there are only like 2 of my flies that work but these fish are very picky any sugestions?
hi mate where are you fishing ive spooned one of the largest rainbow ive caught saturday and found tin foil and a ballon in him that is not picky to me hehe.
Many years of wanting to tie flys brought me to this site. The simplicity and detail of which you operate is perfect. I truely appreciate what you are doing. Gunnery Sergeant C.S. Gurley USMC Rtd
Thanks for your comments. The dubbing is usually hare body fur, I also use rabbit body fur. I do various mixes with additional fluorescent fibres added in moderate quantities. Recently I have acquired possum skin and it is a brilliant dubbing medium. Try it if you can get it.
can you please do a small knot demonstration like very veery slowly please??! thank you, ive been tying flies for 2 years now and i can do everything as good as you, but I use a really bad knot, i need help.
Not only do you make it look easy, you make it look like fun. I got interested recently and your videos here are a great alternative to buying expensive books or dvd's.
Thanks David, Im only 12 but interested in fly tying! Your easy directions our helping my fly fishing and fly typing skills. Havn't landed any trout yet, just blue gill here in Pa
A proper gentleman with a flair for clearly passing on information - makes learning to tie flies an engrossing pleasure. All his flies are catchers I assure you!!! Thank you very much David
Can't wait to give these a go!

I notice you applied the varnish near the eye of the hook. Will that cover up the eyelet and make it difficult to thread a line through the hook?

the varnish secures the knot like glue and if you are worried about the knot get a whip finishing tool

What does the varnish do? Also how do you tie the knot when you are tying off?

Hi etnies4life
Thanks for your e-mail.
I am tempted to ask what colour balloon but will refrain. If rainbows were the brightest fish on the planet we would not catch many on the fly.
